What makes people look rich?

I was out for a walk yesterday with my family. Another family walk along the path towards us. They were dressed in their scruffs, as were we. Other than a quick ‘hello’ as we passed, we didn’t hear them talking, so no accent to gauge. They just looked rich!! Once they’d passed, my cousin turned to me and quietly said ‘loaded!’, obviously out of ear shot. We were both trying the the new work out what brought us to the same conclusion. It wasn’t clothes, accent, we don’t know them, what car they drive, what house they own, jobs they do etc.. so zero knowledge about them, but my cousin and I both had the same first impression.
We could be wrong of course Grin and this is a lighthearted thread.
But, what makes someone look rich?

I agree with iamaweed. When you're not constantly worried about how you would survive if either of you lost your jobs, and you can not worry about the total at the till etc etc it shows on your face.

Papergirl1968 · 30/12/2018 18:54

Wearing sunglasses on your head shouts posh, to me.
And an artfully messy, loose bun.
I don't think a good haircut is as important as good highlights, and a light tan, for that sunkissed just back from the Caribbean look.
Slim figure, good posture, flattering clothes.
Children that are confident enough to exchange a few words with adults.
I don't have any of these things, I must admit. And I'm not wealthy...Grin

Over50andfab · 30/12/2018 19:14

Well there is “old money” and “new money”. Old money has a certain carriage and confidence - knackered Barbour jackets and crusty Hunters - very much a more relaxed look but which oozes upper class. New money is more designer clothes, make up and, in a way, “louder” and not so understated. I’ve worked for both!

thetwinkletoescollective · 30/12/2018 19:17

They look clean...its like a scrubbed from the inside look.
Also their 'scruffy clothes' still scream 'expensive because they are.
There is an air of expectation about them (entitlement is a better word as pp have put it).

I have seen a blue blooded person click their fingers at waiters and it was incredibly cringeworthy and my opinion of that person sunk right down.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/12/2018 19:18

Cashmere jumpers covered with dog hair.

lissie123 · 30/12/2018 19:24

Yes the unsungsong -I agree with your Dh. I’ve been to the Waitrose in Cirencester. Even seen Liz Hurley in there. Stood next to her. My god she was beautiful.

MadameButterface · 30/12/2018 19:29

These threads are always so hilarious

I’m gonna make a bingo card one day with things like

“Crisp white shirt”

“Expensive highlights”

“Barbour jacket”

“Hunter wellies”

“Air of confidence”

on it, then on he other side we can have all the other dreadful chav stuff like obvious designer labels, tattoos, muffin tops, igg boots etc

It’s a shame I didn’t make one earlier cos this thread’ll be a full house once someone says ‘crisp white shirt’

For me personally what makes ppl look rich is when they roll up in their chaise pulled by giant swans wearing their ermine cloaks and serving all of that inbred hapsburg jaw face realness to a t henny

BumbleyBum · 31/12/2018 10:46

Maybe it’s a combination of a few things.. I’m not sure I could pinpoint it to bring just teeth, skin or hair etc.
I had braces and occasionally bleach my teeth (not as white as the Ross episode in Friends). My hair is highlighted. My skin is good as I take care of it and eat healthily. I am relatively confident and walk tall. But, I can’t imagine that I’d look rich Grin maybe I’m lacking the tan Wink

There's a thread in style and beauty atm called I want to dress umc. An eye opener

katekat383 · 31/12/2018 11:28

BumbleyBum

Rich looking eyebrows??? What do they look like shock

Not the ghastly slug brow variety.

katekat383 · 31/12/2018 11:35

TabithaBraithwaite

The mums have designer handbags & shoes, eyebrows & eyelashes done, and Botox & fillers.

I would never class them as posh. That is try-hard. As others have said, people who are really well heeled look fresh, with clear skin, clean casual hair and classic clothes.

Holidayshopping · 31/12/2018 11:40

I would never class them as posh.

The OP was talking about what makes you look rich, not posh.

katekat383 · 31/12/2018 11:42

Actually in my view it amounts to the same thing.

Horsemad · 31/12/2018 11:44

You can be rich but not posh and vice versa, I think!

Holidayshopping · 31/12/2018 11:45

Hmmm, I would disagree.

I know several people who are very very rich but definitely not posh!

TSSDNCOP · 31/12/2018 11:51

Knitwear.
Boots.
Watch.
Confidence.

My super rich friends (why they hang with me is a life mystery) sll have their hair cut at home and rarely gave their nails/eyebrows done. What gives all of them away is a banging watch, boots in a brand you’re unlikely to have heard of unless you go to country shows and really, really expensive knitwear under a generationd old Barbour.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 31/12/2018 11:58

The way they carry themselves - with confidence, stood up straight
Well cut conservative clothes - good quality wool jumpers, good shoes
Well cut hair

Elfinablender · 31/12/2018 12:06

A facial type that looks 1 part horse, 2 part human.

Holidayshopping · 31/12/2018 12:10

You can be rich but not posh and vice versa, I think!

Exactly!

You can be rich with some or all of the following

Horses
Large house
Several expensive cars
A holiday home
Fake teeth
Botox
Loads of designer bags
Several wardrobes of designer clothes
Perfectly manicured/fake eyebrows, eyelashes, nails, toenails.
Etc etc

But not be posh! You might be as vulgar and crass as they come!

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 31/12/2018 12:25

Would it be disposition as well?
I'm imaging purely for this limited narrow mm thread... An over weight family walking up street, borne down by money worries, life worries... Poor diet, drink, smoke too much... Perhaps more a sloping along rather than bright, bouncy richer family in trackies... Looking forward to something... Better diet, maybe still smoke and drink but perhaps do more to off set it?

katekat383 · 31/12/2018 13:11

I take back what I said in a moment of brain blip. Of course you can be rich without being posh. The loadsa money brigade are rarely posh mainly because they don’t understand it’s not actually about showy accoutrements and behaviour.

katekat383 · 31/12/2018 13:12

The Beckhams spring to mind.

amusedbush · 31/12/2018 14:18

He calls it 'The Waitrose Face'

If this is a thing, I definitely have Aldi Face Grin

ILoveMaxiBondi · 31/12/2018 22:45

Some of these responses are so funny

“Not cheap looking stuff”

Ya think? 😂😂😂😂

Bras? The wealthiest old ladies I know tuck them into the top of their corduroys. They don’t bother with bras.

borntobequiet · 31/12/2018 22:53

I sometimes stop off at Cirencester Waitrose and I think I’ve seen the face. TBF it can be seen in other affluent Cotswold towns...
