Sex toy advert on Harry Potter wiki

My 9 year old built the Hogwarts Hall Lego set on Boxing Day and in order to maintain interest, decided to create a landscape for his model. He wanted a photo of the film version of Hogwarts Castle. Image search wasn't great so I went to the Harry Potter wiki.

Where the top advert was for sex toys and sexy lingerie.

I'm FUMING! I have metacert block on pornography. (Now turned up from strong to extra strong). And a BT internet child block on. Which includes nudity & porn. Blocking systems failed. Welcoming blocking software suggestions :-)

Am also upset. And relieved we were together and I had mouse control to scroll it away while I reported it.

2/3rds of All web traffic is for porn. That translates to a new image for every human being on the planet every 15 seconds.

I want this to stop. Because the age of first accidental porn viewing is aged 9-11. And 80% is brutal violence and torture of women.

And it shouldn't be a slippery slope from a Harry Potter site.... one click from Instagram, Snapchat.

Breaks my heart that our children are not safe at home. And yes, this was mild, very mild, and it's still not what I want for my child.

Crikey! That is bad, friggin dildo right next to Newt Scamander Angry
I agree more should be done about it though OP.

Stephisaur · 29/12/2018 13:26

It’s not porn though, is it? It’s just an advert for some products that you can easily buy on the high street.

It’s not child appropriate, I agree, but I think that’s why your ad blockers haven’t worked.

Unfortunately I don’t have any suggestions to prevent you seeing adverts like this in future. They can be linked to browsing history though, so I would perhaps double check with older members of the house whether they’ve been looking at that website? Unless you’ve turned off targeted advertising of course :)

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/12/2018 13:35

I don’t think there are any better suggestions. Your only other option is a blocker that will allow you to create a list of acceptable sites that have no ads.

You’ve done absolutely everything right here, but you’ve basically ended up showing why blocking software can sometimes leave parents with a false sense of security. As you say, fortunately he wasn’t browsing alone.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 29/12/2018 13:36

Doesn't it come from your search history OP?

userblablabla · 29/12/2018 13:39

Don’t buy sex toys online if you don’t want sex toy adverts when you go online

WhatsUpHun · 29/12/2018 13:39

Or browse in private?

Darkbaptism · 29/12/2018 13:40

It’s an advert and quite often they are targeted, what’s in your browser history?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/12/2018 13:42

That looks like a targeted ad - someone has probably been on Lovehoney using your WiFi.

Im a bit surprised it wasn't blocked by your parental controls though. I hope that works in future! Installing Adblocker might be a good secondary precaution.

HannaSong · 29/12/2018 13:43

Like others have said most ads are targeted and linked to your web activity. Even if it's not it's not porn...

Zwischenwasser · 29/12/2018 13:45

I came on to say.... adverts are targeted to your search history.

🤣

My life is wild. I get washing machine ads.

Autumnchill · 29/12/2018 13:47

The ads are targeted. I got PlayStation

hpsaucy · 29/12/2018 13:50

Ads are targeted. I spent the whole of december shielding my ipad as all my teen dds xmas presents kept coming up in the adverts on fb mumsnet etc

Lichtie · 29/12/2018 13:53

Did DH buy you something fun for Christmas OP? Maybe clear your cookies.

adaline · 29/12/2018 13:56

Adverts are targeted to your search history - who's guilty OP, you or your husband?!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 29/12/2018 14:01

Another one here to say ads are targeted so someone has been searching for sex toys on your browser.

Mine throws up ads for Disney world and flights (lots of holiday searching going on at the moment)

RightYesButNo · 29/12/2018 14:16

Here’s how to fix this (or at least it works here): As others have pointed out, the blue symbol in the upper right corner of the ad means it is an AdChoices ad. That means it is based on your browsing history, or the browsing history of someone sharing your WiFi. You can click on the blue symbol and it will provide an option to opt out of that particular ad or those ads all together. I’ve opted out of them before since I get sick of seeing the same ad for cameras (based on page I looked at once) 85,000 times.

katykins85 · 29/12/2018 14:25

Yep definitely a targeted ad. Lot if fuss about nothing if you ask me! I couldn't get worked up about it.

KlutzyDraconequus · 29/12/2018 14:28

How would a 9 year old recognise it as a sex toy?
I'd imagine to a child's eye that photo is two people hugging.

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 14:29

Even if the OP had been buying thousands of sex toys - this still shouldn't come up if she's put child blocks on the computer - are people missing that point?

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 14:30

How would a 9 year old recognise it as a sex toy?

Err, possibly by reading the words "sex toy" on the ad, that'd be a clue, don't you think? Hmm

adaline · 29/12/2018 14:31

Even if the OP had been buying thousands of sex toys - this still shouldn't come up if she's put child blocks on the computer - are people missing that point?

If she doesn't want him seeing dodgy adverts, why not install an Adblock? They're free and work just fine on any computer.

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 14:42

Targeted ads aren't necessarily as simple as seeing an ad for something you've already bought.

That does happen, of course. And you notice it when it does - I currently have a pair of beautiful boots I can't afford that I really want and looked at once, stalking me around the internet! Very annoying!

But targeted ads also can mean you're being targeted because of your assumed age, sex, preferences, location etc etc. This is common but less obvious.

Else - how would they ever get new customers?!

So, a sex toy ad on your computer doesn't necessarily mean anyone's been looking at sex toys on it. (Although, it could).

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 14:44

OP, what's the Harry Potter Wiki?

Surely they should be banning adult ads on their site also?

GabrielKnight · 29/12/2018 14:50

Pretty sure that's a targeted add ....means you've been looking/googling sex toy related stuff!

BertieBotts · 29/12/2018 14:51

That ad has the little blue triangle in the top right which shows it is an AdChoices ad. If you click on the triangle, you can access settings which will enable you to block this ad or categories relating to it. Obviously, tricky to do with your child in view - possibly if you go to the AdChoices website you can do it in retrospect?

You can also use a browser add-on such as adblocker plus which should stop these kinds of ads appearing in the first place.
