Sex toy advert on Harry Potter wiki

My 9 year old built the Hogwarts Hall Lego set on Boxing Day and in order to maintain interest, decided to create a landscape for his model. He wanted a photo of the film version of Hogwarts Castle. Image search wasn't great so I went to the Harry Potter wiki.

Where the top advert was for sex toys and sexy lingerie.

I'm FUMING! I have metacert block on pornography. (Now turned up from strong to extra strong). And a BT internet child block on. Which includes nudity & porn. Blocking systems failed. Welcoming blocking software suggestions :-)

Am also upset. And relieved we were together and I had mouse control to scroll it away while I reported it.

2/3rds of All web traffic is for porn. That translates to a new image for every human being on the planet every 15 seconds.

I want this to stop. Because the age of first accidental porn viewing is aged 9-11. And 80% is brutal violence and torture of women.

And it shouldn't be a slippery slope from a Harry Potter site.... one click from Instagram, Snapchat.

Breaks my heart that our children are not safe at home. And yes, this was mild, very mild, and it's still not what I want for my child.

Ad choices is one of many sites which deliver content based on your own history.

No, as choices give you ads because of the data they have on you. This is much more than just products you looked at recently. Google estimates your age, sex and interests and advertisers use this info tp create targeted ads.

See your own profile here: adssettings.google.com/authenticated

Here's all the data Google & Facebook store on you.

As I said - based on your history, I didn't say "browsing history"

History is not exclusively browsing history, I'm very familiar with the type of data this includes.

None of this alters the fact that the ads are presented based on your history.

inbetweenmass · 30/12/2018 11:25

C8H10N4O2 well, yes technically It's all based on your history in one way or another- but saying your history implies you'll get products based on what you've browsed directly only, and several people on this thread seem to think that's the only way ads are targeted. Whereas what also happens is Google builds up a picture over time and guesses your age, sex and interests, and you get ads targeted to that profile. So although the data originated from your activity online, it's one step removes as it includes guesswork by Google.

My Google data thought I was a bloke for ages as my interests weren't sufficiently feminine apparently Hmm and that would have affected the ads I saw.

but saying your history implies you'll get products based on what you've browsed directly only

No it really doesn't. But I guess we will have to agree to differ on that one.

inbetweenmass · 30/12/2018 11:28

Did you all know that Google tracks your movements by the way? I was surprised the first time I saw this - if you use Gmail or other google services on your phone / other portable devices and don't log out, then Google tracks you.

See your timeline here: www.google.co.uk/maps/timeline

Hahaha. This is G O L D.

Notacluethisxmas · 30/12/2018 12:30

Surely anyone with a smart phone knows they are being tracked unless they turn it all off.

I’d love to get ads for sex toys. I’m currently being stalked around the Internet by two disgusting ponchos and a pair of clear plastic knee high boots.

Oh this thread has to be a contender for Classics, surely?!

Agreed!! Please @MNTowers? Grin

The OP posted, presumably, to get help in protecting her child from inappropriate content online, which is an issue many parents are concerned with. But the responses amount to "ooh you must have been looking at sex toys"

She actively clicked the Yes, please show me personalised Ads button! My sympathy is limited here. Wikia could not possibly have made it any clearer or easier to opt out. People need to read what they are bloody agreeing to.

The Ad wasn't even graphic there were no naughties on show. I'm sure her kids will survive the trauma.

The 'Love Honey' conversation is the best excuse I think I've ever heard in my life.
With taste-testing and comparisons thrown in for good measure, it's almost believable. Grin

Surely you agreed to the site's cookie options...this is a targeted ad. You can hardly get your knickers in a twist when it is 100% your control!
