Sex toy advert on Harry Potter wiki

My 9 year old built the Hogwarts Hall Lego set on Boxing Day and in order to maintain interest, decided to create a landscape for his model. He wanted a photo of the film version of Hogwarts Castle. Image search wasn't great so I went to the Harry Potter wiki.

Where the top advert was for sex toys and sexy lingerie.

I'm FUMING! I have metacert block on pornography. (Now turned up from strong to extra strong). And a BT internet child block on. Which includes nudity & porn. Blocking systems failed. Welcoming blocking software suggestions :-)

Am also upset. And relieved we were together and I had mouse control to scroll it away while I reported it.

2/3rds of All web traffic is for porn. That translates to a new image for every human being on the planet every 15 seconds.

I want this to stop. Because the age of first accidental porn viewing is aged 9-11. And 80% is brutal violence and torture of women.

And it shouldn't be a slippery slope from a Harry Potter site.... one click from Instagram, Snapchat.

Breaks my heart that our children are not safe at home. And yes, this was mild, very mild, and it's still not what I want for my child.

The info about targeted ads is really helpful, thx. I do have add blocker. I searched my boys history immediately. Nothing dodge. It's his user signin on Chrome OS. As people are mentioning networks, I'm wondering if a Christmas visitor, one of 3 adult offspring, did a search on our WiFi?

Chrome settings are to opt out of targeted ads, I will check his settings next.

Someone using your WiFi has visited a site that's attracted that ad, you can bet.

BecauseWomensVoicesMatter · 29/12/2018 15:24

I'm really struggling to believe that WiFi can store data for advertising. Browsers, yes. And I have spoken to DS. He's only ever seen one dodge ad, and that was today's.

Cookies are stored on your device. Could they be picked up even if you're on on a different profile maybe?

spiderplantsalad · 29/12/2018 16:03

Clear your cookies and install an ad block. It does look like a targeted ad though, but who on earth wants that following them round the internet

ARhythmlessMan · 29/12/2018 16:07

That site has a cookie opt in landing page, if you accept you "may" get targeted ads, if you reject you'll get whatever the ad provider is plugging. Not all ads are targeted so browsing history not as big a deal as some are hoping.

BecauseWomensVoicesMatter · 29/12/2018 16:42

I've got an adblocker. Will need to check settings. Does anyone else want to see if they get the same ad on the Harry Potter wiki?

OP posts:
thesnapandfartisinfallible · 29/12/2018 17:38

That's a targeted ad OP. It's based on your search history. Usually limited to that specific machine or any phones that share accounts with it. So if I searched love honey on my phone, their ads would come up on my laptop because the two are paired via my Google account.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 29/12/2018 17:42

Nope I got Pandora.

KlutzyDraconequus · 29/12/2018 17:56

I got pop ups taking me to an online casino, dodgy as fuck, won't be going back there again.

BecauseWomensVoicesMatter · 29/12/2018 18:19

The Harry Potter wiki is a site with a load of info just about HP. There used to be one for Thomas Tank Engine. Maybe still is. It means you have one online space to look through.

BecauseWomensVoicesMatter · 29/12/2018 18:22

Casino! FFS. It's a kids site. So out of order. I tweeted JK, gonna retweet @my MP. No idea what Pandora is. And my family spent a lot of talking about how much we love honey at Christmas. There were 3 jars wrapped up. And taste testing and comparisons. So maybe the microphones were listening to our honey love?

I'm really struggling to believe that WiFi can store data for advertising.

I did a lot of research on the Dyson hairdryer a few weeks ago on our wifi using my phone, logged in to my Safari account. DH now has Dyson ads on his Internet Explorer account on the Xbox.

BecauseWomensVoicesMatter · 29/12/2018 18:53

I've experienced similar. And think it's device microphones listening.

Pandora is a jewelry shop. Which I have searched recently so makes sense.

miltonroad · 29/12/2018 19:26

I got an advert for a bookmakers

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 19:39

Disappointingly mundane ads on the HP wiki so far for me: Sainsbury's, Chrome book, PlayStation

littletortoise · 29/12/2018 19:47

It wouldn’t be listening in. As pps have said it targets you if you’ve searched that site using your wifi, then it will link across any devices that also share that WiFi so... if your husband has been searching, or you, it’ll pop up. It has nothing to do with the actual wiki as they don’t choose to put those adverts there. They only have the ad-choices space. You won’t gain much by complaining I don’t think since it has nothing to do with the site and they aren’t in the wrong.

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 19:50

A website can choose whether to allow adult content through ad choices.

There was a thread about it in MN site stuff only yesterday, one sec...

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 19:50

... and a website can choose to exclude certain types of ad.

inbetweenmass · 29/12/2018 19:56

Here it is - thread about a dodgy ad for "Mature women who always say yes" which MN had had trouble getting rid of:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3462135-hey-mumsnet-wtf-is-this-ad-on-about

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 29/12/2018 20:03

This advert isn’t porn so all that in your OP is completely irrelevant.

The ads are targeted; mine are for Amazon and eBay.

TheFatberg · 29/12/2018 20:04

Why are you sending it to JK Rowling and your MP?

MemoriesOfAnotherFuture · 29/12/2018 20:07

I got this when I went to look at the HP Wiki

I got an advert for Red Dead Redemption when I looked just now, which is accurate as I searched for it to buy myself a day or so ago. There was a blue triangle in the corner, meaning it was a targeted advertisement. If you go back to the site and click on that blue triangle, a page should open up telling you why this advertisement has appeared for you (basically talking you through targeted advertisements)
