Sex toy advert on Harry Potter wiki

My 9 year old built the Hogwarts Hall Lego set on Boxing Day and in order to maintain interest, decided to create a landscape for his model. He wanted a photo of the film version of Hogwarts Castle. Image search wasn't great so I went to the Harry Potter wiki.

Where the top advert was for sex toys and sexy lingerie.

I'm FUMING! I have metacert block on pornography. (Now turned up from strong to extra strong). And a BT internet child block on. Which includes nudity & porn. Blocking systems failed. Welcoming blocking software suggestions :-)

Am also upset. And relieved we were together and I had mouse control to scroll it away while I reported it.

2/3rds of All web traffic is for porn. That translates to a new image for every human being on the planet every 15 seconds.

I want this to stop. Because the age of first accidental porn viewing is aged 9-11. And 80% is brutal violence and torture of women.

And it shouldn't be a slippery slope from a Harry Potter site.... one click from Instagram, Snapchat.

Breaks my heart that our children are not safe at home. And yes, this was mild, very mild, and it's still not what I want for my child.

Wrong kind of Magic Wand? Grin

BertieBotts · 30/12/2018 00:47

I don't see any ads on that site because I have adblock installed. You must not have an adblocker to be seeing ads. Did you decline cookies for personalised advertising when this came up? That would help.

I have now turned off my adblocker, and I get an ad for Netflix.

HirooOnoda · 30/12/2018 00:51

@BecauseWomensVoicesMatter you tweeted JK Rowling and your MP to tell them that you have been browsing sex toys or other related items? I would think it best to try and keep that sort of information to yourself and perhaps brush up on how targeted online advertising works Grin

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 30/12/2018 00:53

She has got an adblocker, you can see it in the screenshot. But when you enter that site it asks permission to show personalised ads and clearly the OP has clicked yes. Grin

Redglitter · 30/12/2018 01:05

I tweeted JK, gonna retweet @my MP

😂😂😂 Brilliant

Hahahahahaha · 30/12/2018 01:14

MP wasn't tweeted only JKR

Didima · 30/12/2018 01:17

Grin Well it's got nothing to do with jk Rowling as it's Wikia, which is just a wikipedia for lots of fandoms not just hp it would be like contact mumsnet about adverts that show up on a news article about mumsnet on a different site. Pointless.
And don't click yes to personalised adverts on the pop up if you don't want your kids knowing what you've been searching for!

JKR is quite tech-savvy - unlike the OP, she’s going to know exactly why OP’s getting ads for sex toys! Grin

OP, even IF it was a random ad for sex toys, and not because you don’t know how to clear your browser history, you know that site has nothing to do with JKR right? It’s a fan site. It talks about Harry Potter in an informal and unauthorised context and is no more affiliated with JKR and her brand than your slightly bonkers thread is.

Incidentally if you google Harry Potter sex toys, this is now the first thing that comes up.... Grin

Ok, OP, so by now you'll have hopefully enrolled on a "how the internet works 101" course.

While you're there - maybe see if there are any fact checking courses - cos your stats don't check out.

bifflediffle · 30/12/2018 08:19

😂😂😂😂. Op you’ve been a bit of a silly billy tweeting JK Rowling the wiki is fuck all to do with her ad it’s on you and yours that have been on love honey.

Incognito mode next time.

bifflediffle · 30/12/2018 08:20

*and

But ad is a Freudian slip

😂😂😂 best laugh I’ve had in ages.

WWYDhelpplease · 30/12/2018 08:28

OMG this is so funny lol. My ads are amazon and holidays, exactly what I’ve been searching online.

Ivegotthree · 30/12/2018 08:33

You'll have been targeted from your search history!

HulksPurplePanties · 30/12/2018 08:35

You don't necessarily have to have been browsing sex toys. If you look at the add it says gifts, lingerie and toys, if you've googled any of those words recently, or say decided to buy some granny panties online, and any of your social media lists you as 18+ female, you will be targeted with those ads, or others like them. It's the price you pay for being online.

Personally I'd just be disappointed that the toy wasn't called "Sirius Black's Wand". I think they're missing out on a demographic here.

tinesltitties · 30/12/2018 08:57

Bless OP, I guess you won't be retiring to this thread. I have to say you gave me a good giggle this morning. Despite several Mumsnetter pointing out how and why this happened, you tweeted JKR GrinGrinGrinGrin

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 30/12/2018 09:05

And my family spent a lot of talking about how much we love honey at Christmas. There were 3 jars wrapped up. And taste testing and comparisons. So maybe the microphones were listening to our honey love?

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Yeah, that's probably it.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 30/12/2018 09:20

I have an ad for Red Dead Redemption 2, probably because I’ve been looking at the subreddit.

I also get a lot of ads on other sites about cutting costs and saving money. They must know I’m aiming to be tight!

😂😂😂😂 brilliant!

Look, at the end of tbe day its a woman in some underwear and a sex toy. Its not porn ffs! Stuff like this comes up on our computers too, my 10yo DD just laughs about it as we try not to make sex a ridiculously taboo subject and she is fully informed about it. Maybe just explain it to your son and move on with your life. Tweeting JK Rowling, amazing! 😂😂

Elledouble · 30/12/2018 09:39

Oh this thread has to be a contender for Classics, surely?!

inbetweenmass · 30/12/2018 09:45

The night shift proving yet again that MN is full of small minded aresholes.

The OP posted, presumably, to get help in protecting her child from inappropriate content online, which is an issue many parents are concerned with.

But the responses amount to "ooh you must have been looking at sex toys"

How old are you all, 15?

Fucking pathetic.

LostInShoebiz · 30/12/2018 09:48

Fucking pathetically accurate!

katykins85 · 30/12/2018 09:49

inbetween, surely you can see that the OP has massively overreacted?!
