Sex toy advert on Harry Potter wiki

My 9 year old built the Hogwarts Hall Lego set on Boxing Day and in order to maintain interest, decided to create a landscape for his model. He wanted a photo of the film version of Hogwarts Castle. Image search wasn't great so I went to the Harry Potter wiki.

Where the top advert was for sex toys and sexy lingerie.

I'm FUMING! I have metacert block on pornography. (Now turned up from strong to extra strong). And a BT internet child block on. Which includes nudity & porn. Blocking systems failed. Welcoming blocking software suggestions :-)

Am also upset. And relieved we were together and I had mouse control to scroll it away while I reported it.

2/3rds of All web traffic is for porn. That translates to a new image for every human being on the planet every 15 seconds.

I want this to stop. Because the age of first accidental porn viewing is aged 9-11. And 80% is brutal violence and torture of women.

And it shouldn't be a slippery slope from a Harry Potter site.... one click from Instagram, Snapchat.

Breaks my heart that our children are not safe at home. And yes, this was mild, very mild, and it's still not what I want for my child.

Insomnibrat and now you're stalking the OP online? How is that in the spirit of helping other parents (the point if MN, supposedly).

I've reported your post.

inbetween

Plenty of people actually explained how it could happen. Things like search history, accepting advertising when you go on the site, I mean that one is quite a biggie in terms of what happened.

The only pathetic things about this post is that the OP ignores every possible explanation and tweeted JKR, as if she runs a bloody fan site Hmm

kaytee87 · 30/12/2018 10:07

😂😂😂😂
I can't believe you tweeted JK about this. Bloody hilarious.
Someone in your family has been looking up dodgy sites, nothing to do with JK Rowling Grin

inbetweenmass · 30/12/2018 10:12

What's wrong with tweeting JKR? If there's a HP site that's hosting adult ads, she could have some influence. It won't only be this sex toys one, it'll be other adult content too.

The HP site are choosing to host adult ads. They could switch them off if they wanted to. If they're HP fans and JKR got in touch about it then they might feel inclined to do something about it. If so, that'd be a pretty amazing outcome as not only would the OP be protecting her own child but others also.

Sure, it's unlikely that JKR would do this, but she's a feminist and a mother - you never know, she might, and it can't hurt to ask.

From your stalking Hmm we see the OP's an activist. So, someone who spends her time getting off her arse and working out how to change the world for the better - not someone who spends their time tittering about the mention of sex toys on MN.

I know who's making themselves look like twats and it's not the OP.

tinesltitties · 30/12/2018 10:14

Erm, just like OP could have done Hmm

Wynden · 30/12/2018 10:16

It's not a Harry Potter fan site. It's just a site that host fandom Wikis, one of which is Harry Potter.

Wynden · 30/12/2018 10:18

Would be more productive to message Wikia, as JKR has no influence over this site. community.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Bad_advertisements

inbetweenmass · 30/12/2018 10:22

That sounds like a good idea Wynden.

(Although - JKR is such a big name, she could still be influencial!)

InLoveWithMyDressingGown · 30/12/2018 10:24

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Paddy1234 · 30/12/2018 10:35

So disappointed that I got an advert for a sofa
#is this my life now

katykins85 · 30/12/2018 10:36

I love how recent posters are deliberately ignoring unaware of how targeted advertising works!

Notacluethisxmas · 30/12/2018 10:38

For fucks sake, so op has effectively tweeted JKR to let her know that someone in her house has been looking up sex toys over Christmas?

Hilarious!Grin

NotACleverName · 30/12/2018 10:44

You don't understand how targetted ads work, do you inbetweenmass?

ChesterGreySideboard · 30/12/2018 10:45

First you need to make sure everyone in your house knows about incognito mode.

Last night I had a load of friends round and we were talking about Ann Summers and things you could buy there. We all had our phones with us and there is a google home in the room. I’ve never googled that shop.
Following your logic op if I go to the HP wiki site the advert I get should be for AS. Let’s see.

ChesterGreySideboard · 30/12/2018 10:47

Nope. I got adverts for the Halifax and a charity.

ChesterGreySideboard · 30/12/2018 10:49

On MN I’m forever getting ads for London Night Nannys. Which is not very will targeted as I don’t live in London or have children.

HulksPurplePanties · 30/12/2018 10:51

The HP site are choosing to host adult ads. They could switch them off if they wanted to.

Given that most of the HP fandom is well over 18, I'm not surprised they haven't switched them off.

adaline · 30/12/2018 10:57

What's wrong with tweeting JKR? If there's a HP site that's hosting adult ads, she could have some influence. It won't only be this sex toys one, it'll be other adult content too.

You know that HP Wiki pages have nothing to do with JKR, right? They're just pages made by the fans of the series. She has no influence over it whatsoever.

The HP site are choosing to host adult ads. They could switch them off if they wanted to.

I'm not surprised. Most Harry Potter fans will be over 18 now and they pick the ads that are going to make them the most money. And as PP have said, OP could just as easily turn them off. That's what adblocks are for.

Notacluethisxmas · 30/12/2018 10:58

My best friend was looking at the dyso hairdryer today. I gave cone round and logged in her Wi-Fi, and getting adverts for it.

OP I get that you are desperate to believe non of your kids have been scrolling sex shops. But they are adults. It's not that unusual.

C8H10N4O2 · 30/12/2018 10:59

And my family spent a lot of talking about how much we love honey at Christmas. There were 3 jars wrapped up. And taste testing and comparisons. So maybe the microphones were listening to our honey love?

Definitely. GCHQ have probably opened the back door on your phone, taken your honey conversation and stored it in a cookie on the browser

When in a hole OP...

C8H10N4O2 · 30/12/2018 11:07

The OP posted, presumably, to get help in protecting her child from inappropriate content online, which is an issue many parents are concerned with. But the responses amount to "ooh you must have been looking at sex toys"

Because that is how the adverts work.

Ad choices is one of many sites which deliver content based on your own history. So something in the history would have triggered that ad.

Wikia is nothing to do with JKR, not only will she have no editorial control but most authors keep intentionally clear of interfering with fan sites.

There are multiple ways in which the OP can block adverts, already suggested by PPs.

Wikia itself presents you with a clear, one click option to block ads before you even enter the site.

On having this explained the OP remembers a that they indulged in that fine old tradition of honey tasting at Christmas, so obviously the answer is this was heard by ghosts in the machines and converted into a cookie on the browser.

Just waiting for the next installment.

inbetweenmass · 30/12/2018 11:10

You don't understand how targetted ads work, do you inbetweenmass?

No, it's you who don't understand how they work. Have you ever created an audience for an online ad? I have.

The kind of ads that show you the same thing you've seen before are "remarketing ads". So you view a sofa, then that sofa stalks you around the internet.

But they're not the only kind of targeted ad. Ads target new audiences also. So, for example - you might see an ad for a sofa sale because Chrome estimates you to be female and 35-45, and it's January, and this is their targeted audience.

Everyone who thinks targeted advertising is only about seeing things you've browsed for, is demonstrating they don't understand what targeted means.

It simply means selling to you on the basis of data they have on you, and they have A LOT more data on you than just the products you looked at.

Raven88 · 30/12/2018 11:10

The site that is hosting the Harry Porter Wiki isn't a children's site and also hosts wikis for Vampire Diaries and I think 50 shades of Grey. When I went on the Harry Potter site I got 3 ads,for ADT, Amazon, NowTV.

C8H10N4O2 · 30/12/2018 11:12

The HP site are choosing to host adult ads. They could switch them off if they wanted to

Wikia, the site, will be using adverts to fund the service. Most of these sites allow sub sites to self define as "adult content" or not which can influence some of the ad delivery.

Ultimately though, they make it far easier to opt out of adverts than most sites - one click. Use it.
