DD just boiled milk in the kettle

Can you guess what my kitchen looks like ffs

She called up and asked if she could make hot chocolate, I said yes, she decided she couldn't wait for the milk to heat on the hob and filled the kettle instead.

I now need a new kettle on christmas eve and I was determined to stay away from the shops today

Goodness me that’s how we learn best thriugh trail and error.
When I was this age ish I boiled eggs for lunch, forgot about them and they exploded all over the kitchen ceiling. It was very loud. What a mess. I’ve never forgotten about eggs since.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/12/2018 12:21

The biggest thing that stood out for me is that your 14yo had to ask before making herself a drink!
Yeah I did note that but forgot in the midst of all the horrid posters saying how stupid DD was.

MadGoose · 24/12/2018 12:21

I wouldn’t be leaving her home alone if she thought milk could go in a kettle tbh.

That's how people learn... or were you born with all the knowledge you currently have?

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 24/12/2018 12:23

Sainsbury's had some kettles in their sales today.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 24/12/2018 12:25

14 years old.... I knew how to boil a kettle and make a cup of tea at 10!

Luckily kettle are not too expensive but I know that's not the point! Doesn't she know how to boil milk on the hob or in the microwave?

krustykittens · 24/12/2018 12:26

In a fit of helpfulness, my 16 year old decided to clean up the kitchen and threw out the homemade tomato soup her father spent ages making yesterday. "I thought it was residue". Despite the fact she had seen him making it and despite the fact he had told them not to touch it. "Is nothing fucking obvious?!" He is now raging. Not to teenagers, no. You have my sympathy, OP.

puddlesplashing · 24/12/2018 12:27

Why did a 14 year old have to ask before making herself a drink? Is she SEN x

HeronLanyon · 24/12/2018 12:28

Oh bless her. I am over 50 and totalled a toaster by thinking I could just quickly soften a block of butter by just gently warming it a bit on rack over toaster. Of course I forgot and returned to kitchen quite a bit later to acrid smoke and blown fuse etc. Quite stupid from start to finish. No excuse. Don’t be too tough on her !

puddlesplashing · 24/12/2018 12:28

Not being goady. Genuine question.

sandytoes84 · 24/12/2018 12:30

Haha I can remember doing exactly the same thing when I was about 9/10. Thankfully my parents found it funny and I had a practical lesson in the differing boiling points of different liquids!

She obviously didn’t set out to break your kettle, so some of the comments seem quite harsh. It’s not worth making her suffer or be punished if it wasn’t malicious. Just laugh it off and remember Christmas 2018 as the one with the boiled milk!

italiancortado · 24/12/2018 12:30

14 years old.... I knew how to boil a kettle and make a cup of tea at 10!

I'm sure the OP DD does as Wells. This isn't about not knowing how to make tea so not sure what your point is Confused

FestiveNut · 24/12/2018 12:32

Awww, bless her. It was a genuine mistake so I wouldn't punish her at all. What would it achieve? She's already not going to do it again.

I think amazon prime probably won't work on Christmas Eve. Could be wrong though.

And microwaving milk does work.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 24/12/2018 12:33

God there are some bitchy, twatty people in the world, aren’t there.

FestiveNut · 24/12/2018 12:33

Just watch it and don't let it boil over.

houseofrabbits · 24/12/2018 12:33

Lots of you are being very harsh. This is something I would have done as a teenager, very academic but no common sense. My DM also would lose her shit at me for making mistakes like this and it was horrible. No wonder the children I teach are terrified of making mistakes Hmm

10PollyPockets · 24/12/2018 12:36

The responses here are so o.t.t, it was an honest mistake not like she set out to break the kettle. It's lucky she wasn't in the room, imagine the burns she could of got. Even adults do silly things like this, I'm sure she won't be repeating it. I once set the microwave on fire putting a block of chocolate in it when I was a teenager.

SnugglySnerd · 24/12/2018 12:39

When I was a student I made scrambled eggs in the microwave. I must have put them on for 30 mins instead of 30 seconds and I wondered off and forgot about them. The smell of burning egg was horrendous and I had to throw out the Pyrex jug that had eggs cooked into the bottom like cement.

It paled into insignificance when my housemate thought she could dry her socks in the microwave and set it on fire!
We still laugh about these episodes when we meet up and I'm sure you will laugh over this too in the future.

CarolDanvers · 24/12/2018 12:54

I am not surprised by this. My 15 year old has done some stupid shit that beggars belief. I'd make her contribute a tenner towards a replacement.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/12/2018 12:54

Once you’ve got over having to replace the kettle, you will laugh.

DNiece did this at 6. Probably the only reason she wouldn’t do it now at 12 is because it’s gone down into family legend.

At least she’s learnt her lesson now.

FestiveNut · 24/12/2018 13:04

DNiece did this at 6.

Surprised a six year old was allowed to use the kettle tbh.

safariboot · 24/12/2018 13:08
Grin

I'm sure we've all made household mistakes as teenagers. I ran over the flex with the vacuum cleaner and stripped it down to bare wires Blush.

She can clean up then get the new kettle. Not as a punishment, but as a "you break it, you fix it".

fluffiphlox · 24/12/2018 13:12

“Scolding milk”. 😀

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/12/2018 13:21

She isn’t Festive. Which is what the majority of the punishment for that particular escapade was for.

FestiveNut · 24/12/2018 13:27

Ah.

Scolding milk

Made me laugh too. Yet another reason not to punish her. The milk already told her off. Xmas Grin

Punto1 · 24/12/2018 13:31

To be honest, if I had had the idea myself, I would have probably attempted this too lol.
The boiling point shouldn't be an issue, as it's the pressure of the steam rising that switches the kettle off. So, one would assume the boiling milk would have created enough steam. Hmm. Interesting one.

Also have an A level in Physics!

We need further explanation as to why this milk exploded.

Any hydraulic engineers about?

As for the mean comments, ffs, grow up beatches.
