DD just boiled milk in the kettle

Can you guess what my kitchen looks like ffs

She called up and asked if she could make hot chocolate, I said yes, she decided she couldn't wait for the milk to heat on the hob and filled the kettle instead.

I now need a new kettle on christmas eve and I was determined to stay away from the shops today

Mine made a sandwich in the sandwich maker and toasted the wire as well as the bread. Made a very loud bang Xmas Shock

viques · 24/12/2018 11:11

Is anyone else thinking," hmm, a neat little kettle just for heating up hot milk, if such a thing existed I'd buy one"

Sorry op, I know you are miffed with your DD, but if James Dyson happens to be reading MN this morning.........

safetyfreak · 24/12/2018 11:12

I did this when I was 21, first time living away from home in my own flat. Yeah that taught me!

youarenotkiddingme · 24/12/2018 11:12

Some harsh responses here.

She's 14! She's actually trying to do things by herself. Many 14 yo would have text from another room asking mum to do it Wink

I have a 14yo ds. Sometimes he makes mistakes because he thinks he's clicked soon some magnificent idea. Like his mother before-him he soon realised there's a reason it's done the Learnt way 😂

MysweetAudrina · 24/12/2018 11:12

Tbh I'm more surprised that a 14 year old would want a toy dog.

Hecksonaplane · 24/12/2018 11:14

Yep I did this as a kid, I also used to make the tea for ddad and dsis whilst dm was at work so I wasn't daft Smilealthough I still couldn't tell you why this doesn't work but know it would stick to the element. Mine didn't it just boiled over, although milks boiling point is slightly higher than water Blush I haven't done it again!

Lovemusic33 · 24/12/2018 11:14

I have a 14 year old like yours OP, very intelligent but with no common sense. I have been trying to get her to cook basic food, last week she asked me “do I need oven gloves or can I take the pizza out with by bare hands?” Hmm ,this is a child who has predicted level 9’s in GCSE.

Anyway, hope you manage to get a kettle, you could always ask on a local Fb page if anyone has a spare to get you through Christmas?

I wouldn’t be too angry, she now knows that milk does not go in the kettle and you can laugh about it for years to come.

Fuckyousanta · 24/12/2018 11:14

The toy dog is for the 3 year old Grin

Was just thinking what a great idea. I think she is smart and imaginative and inventive. Just didn't work out. That's science. Getting things wrong is good...creates original thinking and new ideas.

I remember making my mum a cream tea once (put double cream in her tea.) It's learning that's all.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 24/12/2018 11:15

I've done this myself. I don't know how old I was but it was logical to me.

I'd take DD with me in the car, keep the car running whilst she nips in to get the replacement kettle. No parking fuss then and you'd be in and out - and can celebrate with a hot chocolate! Xmas Grin

Fuckyousanta · 24/12/2018 11:15

Having googled it turns out you can boil milk in a kettle but the lid needs to be off!

OP posts:
NotTerfNorCis · 24/12/2018 11:18

My OH did this as an adult. Not unreasonable if you've never boiled milk before. Hmm

veggiepigsinpastryblankets · 24/12/2018 11:18

Someone at my uni did this in halls, with a tin of soup! Think yourself lucky she's getting it over with at 14 (though at least if she saved it for uni it wouldn't be all over your kitchen)

Willow2017 · 24/12/2018 11:19

Why hot milk? There's already milk in it. Use hot water and a splash of cold milk, like instant coffee.

Because real.hot choc is made with cocoa powder and hot milk.

Ffs folks she is 14. We all make mistakes. I am in my 50s and still make mistakes now and again. Irs not the end of the freaking world is it?

Op as others have said its something she wont do again and you can tease her about when she gets married /21st/ has kids and complains about them😁😁

Go get a new kettle with her and laugh about it over a hot choc and all the trimmings in a cafe.

anitagreen · 24/12/2018 11:22

I'm so shocked milk does that in a kettle I'm quite dense though I remember when my friend was with a boy who was in prison and he used to boil pasta and tuna somehow in a kettle and eat that at lock up time Shock

81Byerley · 24/12/2018 11:22

Sorry, Fuckyousanta, but hahahaha! A great story to tell for when she's older! Happy Christmas!

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 24/12/2018 11:23

Toy puppy that does tricks is reduced from £130 to £40 with very. Don't know if you can get it delivered on time or say Santa said it would be late because she asked for it late!

KittyClaus · 24/12/2018 11:23

A student I shared a kitchen with at uni did this aged 19. It's annoying but she's not beyond all hope for having done it.

anitagreen · 24/12/2018 11:23

If it makes you or her feel any better op I once put a pizza in the oven, aged 19 and for no reason at all I flipped it over to cook the base through, even though I knew I didn't actually need too Confused, all the topping fell off stuckto the oven and my mum went mad Grin

SummerGems · 24/12/2018 11:25

Is anyone else thinking," hmm, a neat little kettle just for heating up hot milk, if such a thing existed I'd buy one" there is. The aerolat frother has a heating only function.

Some of the responses on this thread are ridiculous. Not mature enough? Not to be left home alone? I wouldn’t be happy if myvteen did this but I bet this is the stuff of student houses the country over.

MrsJayy · 24/12/2018 11:25

Yes she is 14 she was a pillock but she isn't a baby i really wish people would stop infantising teenagers as if they are handless

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/12/2018 11:25

It's actually really funny. Poor kid. I bet she was horrified!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 24/12/2018 11:26

anitagreen, I too have done that. And again with cheese on toast instead of toasting the bread first. I wouldn't do it again though. Grin

BlueEyedPersephone · 24/12/2018 11:26

Am glad she's not hurt, lesson learnt, make her come with you to get one but don't be too hard. People on here are being way too mean

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 24/12/2018 11:28

I was making myself Ovaltine once upon a time and was gently heating some milk in a saucepan. I then got distracted by The Goodies and left the milk for 1/2 hour. It went completely black and ruined my mum’s milk pan. I must have been around 14...
