DD just boiled milk in the kettle

Can you guess what my kitchen looks like ffs

She called up and asked if she could make hot chocolate, I said yes, she decided she couldn't wait for the milk to heat on the hob and filled the kettle instead.

I now need a new kettle on christmas eve and I was determined to stay away from the shops today

Sorry but this did make me laugh. It's the kind of thing I would have done and been quite smug thinking I'd found a shortcut Grin

MysweetAudrina · 24/12/2018 10:50

I can see how she might think this was a bright idea. Definitely one for her wedding speech. Make a memory from it. Go out and get a new one and go for a festive hot chocolate together.

BikeRunSki · 24/12/2018 10:52

Amazon prime now. Have one by lunchtime.

I think that’s only in a few urban areas. Certainly not in my rural area!

Rarfy · 24/12/2018 10:52

I once tried to boil eggs in the microwave aged 18. You live and learn. Can you do an Argos fast track delivery save you going to the shops?

Kerberos · 24/12/2018 10:52

Sounds like the kind of thing my teenager would do. She's fascinated by "what might happen if" questions - like milk in a soda stream for example

Daft but not punishworthy I don't think.

Fuckyousanta · 24/12/2018 10:52

She's been making hot chocolate on the hob for years, no idea why she decided today it would take too long!

Not in amazon prime area, but DD has spent all morning talking about santa bringing her a walking talking toy puppy so it sounds like I need to go out anyway

I bet OP's DD has been taught some things that your children haven't!

She was trying to boil a kettle. A task so mundane and basic, 99% of people have never needed to be “taught” to do it.

Fuckyousanta · 24/12/2018 10:54

I think you can boil eggs in a kettle....prison cooking!

It is not stupid to try to boil milk, it is something one learns through either being told or experience. It is actually quite a logical approach to the problem of making a quick hot chocolate😀.

I am not sure why it would blow up a kettle either, unless the kettle is defective. It is the pressure of the water vapour that should turn it off.

I think she should clean up the mess and that is it. She will never do it again..,

Celebelly · 24/12/2018 10:57

This reminds me of a few years ago when my dad got me and DP some kind of coffee-making pot thing (despite the fact neither of us drink coffee). I decided to use it but had never seen one before, and DP suggested the lid should be off and then we could see what was going on inside. All fine until scalding hot rivulets of coffee started spurting out the top in 360 degrees. We had to flee the kitchen and it took ages to clean up. I still laugh thinking of it now. And we never used it again.

MrsJayy · 24/12/2018 10:58

There is a big difference between burning a pizza and boiling milk in a kettle she has to know kettles are for watee she is 14 not 4 stop making excuses for her . I would be getting her to clean up then take her to trudge to the shops for a kettle, every action has a reaction and all that

Thistly · 24/12/2018 10:58

Never needed to be taught....

There are lots of reasons why people sometimes need stuff that other people perceive as ‘basic’ talking through and pointing out to them.... like walking into a room and stopping in the doorway so nobody else can access the door.

Fwiw my mum always fills my kettle through the spout and splashes water everywhere as it has a filter thing. I have had the same kettle for 6 years and she still does it.

Op my dd did the same. Luckily it didn’t break.

helpmedecidepleas · 24/12/2018 10:58

I did this around the same age, you'll be pleased to know that you only try it once!

ChippyMinton · 24/12/2018 11:00

‘Tis the stuff of legend. You will be trotting out this tale every Christmas Eve for ever.
At least it’s easy to replace.

helpmedecidepleas · 24/12/2018 11:01

And to the PP who are being dramatic, despite my milk kettle boiling mistake, you may be surprised to learn that I've managed to live an independent adult life Grin

Fairylea · 24/12/2018 11:02

I love this. It’s actually quite funny. I’ve just shared it with dh who is also smiling. We have a dd aged 15 and this is the sort of stuff teens do. They live and learn!

ApolloandDaphne · 24/12/2018 11:02

Ach we all do stupid things as kids. She will never do this again!

DameSquashalot · 24/12/2018 11:03

An adult friend of ours did something similar with a kettle. 🤷‍♀️

larrygrylls · 24/12/2018 11:03

You could boil loads of different liquids in a kettle, it is just a hot element after all.

To KNOW it was unsuitable for milk, you would need to know that milk should not actually be boiled but carefully heated until about 60 degrees to avoid a bunch of unpleasant chemical reactions.

I just don’t get why this should be obvious?

Personally, I sympathise and find it quite amusing.

Happyandshiney · 24/12/2018 11:04

I’d be sending the 14 yo out on the bus to buy a new kettle after having scrubbed the kitchen.

I’m a bit Hmm that anyone thinks this is reasonable 14 yo behaviour.

Juells · 24/12/2018 11:04

m0therofdragons
My dad put my electric kettle on the gas hob because it looked like a hob one

I did that with my daughter's kettle Blush In my defence it looked like a kettle for a hob, and was sitting right beside the hob as DD had just poured boiling water into a soup pot. Luckily I noticed the plug thing in time.

I don't know what to say about a 14-year-old who tried to boil milk in a kettle though Grin You'll dine out on that story in years to come, and she'll be annoyed with you Grin

Missingstreetlife · 24/12/2018 11:05

Why hot milk? There's already milk in it. Use hot water and a splash of cold milk, like instant coffee.

Dieu · 24/12/2018 11:07

Brilliant 18th fodder!

Stoneagemum · 24/12/2018 11:09

Kids do stupid shit, it's how we learn
My dd made me coffee in the kettle, couldn't find the toaster bags so wrapped the sandwich in tinfoil and put it in the toaster
Shit happens and we all learn

BestIsWest · 24/12/2018 11:09

Oh bless her. Glad she is ok though. (I know I probably wouldn’t say that if she was mine)
