DD just boiled milk in the kettle

Can you guess what my kitchen looks like ffs

She called up and asked if she could make hot chocolate, I said yes, she decided she couldn't wait for the milk to heat on the hob and filled the kettle instead.

I now need a new kettle on christmas eve and I was determined to stay away from the shops today

@Cellebelly that's an amazing story 😂

redsummershoes · 24/12/2018 11:53

good time to teach her how to clean the kettle and how to replace the fuse in the plug (that's probably why it's not switching on).
and yes, send her to the supermarket to buy a new kettle.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/12/2018 11:54

Daughter is getting a rough ride here. She checked it was OK to make, OK she screwed up the making but I'm sure it made sense in her head and wasn't done maliciously.. It will be funny in a few years.

Very glad she wasn't hurt.

championquartz · 24/12/2018 11:54

Ach I see her logic too. Not an un-intelligent thing to do. I'm a dab hand in the kitchen and I still make mistakes. I'm 50. Grin
We've all burnt the arse off a saucepan! And that's a lot more expensive to replace.

It's a pain it broke the kettle but no biggie really. And a good story for years to come!

Celebelly · 24/12/2018 11:56

Actually laughing at the people who don't think doing stuff like this is normal teenage behaviour Grin I'm pretty sure all my friends have stories like this about silly stuff they did (I can actually think of some of them now!). I know I have several! She's not thick, immature, or any of the other lovely things you're spending your Christmas Eve calling a 14-year-old girl online. She's a teenager.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 24/12/2018 11:57

BlueJag, as you're in full-on School Ma'am mode, this may blow your mind... www.i2rps.com/article/5ad06a259563d/Aluminium-trays-in-the-microwave

Many ready meals now come in this type of tray and are absolutely fine to be heated up in the microwave.

Celebelly · 24/12/2018 11:57

Also those milk frother things are great. My mum just got one and it's still a novelty so we get lots of hot chocolates when we visit!

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 24/12/2018 11:58

Hotel chocolat do a hot chocolate maker. It's a bit expensive but worth it if you like hot chocolate at the push of a button.

CaveMum · 24/12/2018 11:58

It’s not just teenagers who do this. A young woman (21 ish) who worked in my building killed the communal kettle doing the exact same thing.

I seem to recall Clare Balding sayingbin her autobiography that her father did the same thing when she was young and he was left in sole charge of her and her brother.

Fuckyousanta · 24/12/2018 11:58

“She sounds a bit thick”

And you sound an absolute delight

Cherries10. How do you have the nerve to post that somebody's child 'sounds thick'? Do you have any social graces? At all? Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 24/12/2018 11:59

Jinx, Fuckyousanta, for the cross post. Xmas Grin

bellinisurge · 24/12/2018 12:01

When learning at school how to make shepherds pie (70s recipe that I still use), I put the potatoes on to heat up in a pan.
Without water.
That's how you learn.
And how you watch grown ups silently saying ffs.
Hope you get sorted, op.

MiddlingMum · 24/12/2018 12:01

Poor girl. She's 14. Not everyone is perfect at everything, despite what some people on MN would have you think.

Lesson learned, and all it needs is a new kettle. She's not hurt, which is the main thing. I could fill up the internet with "mistakes" that mine made while growing up and learning about the world. Competent adults now.

Willow2017 · 24/12/2018 12:07

I am so glad to know there are all these perfect delusional people out there who have never ever made a mistake! Must be great to belive that of yourself while the rest of us just muddle though making mistakes here and there just to.make you feel superior.🤔🤔

Didiplanthis · 24/12/2018 12:07

I'm a very highly qualified professional in a responsible job. I've never done this but I'm not sure I would have foreseen that happening if I had considered it ! It never really crossed my mind but not sure I might not have tried it had I thought of it....

Didiplanthis · 24/12/2018 12:08

And I have physics A level..

ButtMuncher · 24/12/2018 12:08

@Cherries101 piss off love, she's 14. We've all made mistakes.

Definitely a story to tell! Try Argos, some areas will deliver fast track but may not do today. When I was 14, and veggie, I thought picking the meat off a pizza would render it vegetarian Grin

cestlavielife · 24/12/2018 12:09

Send her to buy new kettle !

italiancortado · 24/12/2018 12:10

The biggest thing that stood out for me is that your 14yo had to ask before making herself a drink!

The milk in the kettle thing, not so weird to give it a try.

Onemorefireball · 24/12/2018 12:12

I think people are being quite harsh. I expect she feels bad and she won't do it again! Get her to clean it up and then both of you go and get a new one.

Remnnd6her of it forevermore.

Littleraindrop15 · 24/12/2018 12:12

Aww bless her well on the bright side you'll have many belly tickles as the years go!

I've always wanted to do it but didn't as I wasn't sure how the milk would clean up after the metal plates. 😂 Now I know to erase the thought!

Merry Christmas x

Mishappening · 24/12/2018 12:13

I once tried that too - never again! I was older than 14!

juneybean · 24/12/2018 12:19

Hahaha ah most of us have been there. I once put supernoodles in the microwave with no water at 14, the smell!!! Urgh.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 24/12/2018 12:20

I think your daughter has unwittingly performed a public service, fuckyousanta, sorry about your kitchen though...
