Anyone else been to see it?

DD and I went last night. I absolutely loved it. Definitely worth going to see. Her little face during some of the fantastical scenes was worth it alone.

hairypaws · 22/12/2018 11:10

We're all going this afternoon. Can't wait.

Gimmeesugar · 22/12/2018 11:12

Do you think a 3.5 year old would enjoy it? She’s quite good at sitting still but never taken her to a full length film at cinema before

Bottomplasters · 22/12/2018 11:13

I hadn’t read up on it and thought it was going to be same as first one with same songs so I got a nice shock but did miss the old songs

I saw it yesterday. Not a patch on the original IMO and the songs were forgettable but quite charming and my DC (6 and 9) really enjoyed it.

Childrenofthesun · 22/12/2018 11:15

It's quite long Gimmeesugar.

IndigoApple · 22/12/2018 11:24

Sorry but I hated it! But I may not be the target audience - late 40s and didn't take any children with me. It was far too long and I also missed the original songs.

Emily Mortimer was good as the grown up Jane Banks but other characters annoyed me!

I didn't enjoy Trainspotting 2 so maybe I should avoid sequels made a long time after the original!

Interested to hear others' opinions.

canibehereifimnotamum · 22/12/2018 11:29

Going Xmas eve with the family. I love Emily Blunt, there couldn't of been a better person, apart from the original obv

LuxuryWoman2018 · 22/12/2018 11:40

Very much enjoyed it.

onemouseplace · 22/12/2018 11:46

It was ok. Lin Manuel Miranda was good and I liked Dick Van Dyke's cameo. I really didn't like Emily Blunt in it (and normally I love her) and the songs weren't a patch on the original and I hated the final song. The three children were good though, especially the youngest one.

It just didn't have the magic of the original for me. DCs (9 and 7) really enjoyed it though.

MrsChollySawcutt · 22/12/2018 11:53

On the fence about seeing this. Was excited when Emily Blunt was cast and usually like her in most things (though definitely not Girl on a Train). But having seen the trailer I'm really put off my the weirdly fake plummy accent she is using for the character. Does she talk like that all through?

Don't mind about new songs - was actually hoping they would use some of the songs from the musical version (an excellent show which is having a revival in London next year).

ManicUnicorn · 22/12/2018 11:55

I think it's sacreligious, how can anyone other than Julie Andrews play Mary Poppins?! Why do they have to remake and reboot eveyrthing these days? It's unimagintive and lazy.

Theunsungsong · 22/12/2018 12:18

Entertaining enough, but Emily Blunt kept doing a side eye look which made her look sly, the songs were indifferent, I didn't think the child playing John was very good.

Mainly hated Michael and his stupid moustache. 'Oh no! I've borrowed all this money and forgot to pay it back and now we will lose the family home ( that I inherited so didn't pay for in the first place) and I don't know where the important financial papers are. But it's not my fault because that was all wife work, and she's dead. And I can't get a proper because I'm an artist.

Did I mention I had twins?'

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 22/12/2018 14:04

I'm not sure if I liked it or not!!!
I quite liked how it followed the same format of the first film - tidy up nursery / have a bath, chalk painting /bowl etc
And I loved the end bit at the bank and the original Jane's cameo and a few nods to the original 'you are still not a codfish'
But.... Emily blunts accent was too cut glass
The umbrella was wrong
Jack's accent was also wrong
Why would a woman in that era be in charge of a bank loan/ finances

And its just not the same!!!

Bottomplasters · 22/12/2018 14:40

I have some questions:

Was a lot of it computer generated. The bit on the bike when they were balancing? Would that have happened?

How do they get young children to act? Would they learn loads and loads of lines. How can they do that when my DD can barely remember her one sentence in school play!

The actor who played Jack is American! I thought he was a great cockney! He also wrote Hamilton. What a guy

I didn't know she'd been away.

MsPavlichenko · 22/12/2018 17:56

I loved it. It is not a remake as such, but based on PL Travers other MP books. I read them as a girl.

I was worries as I love the first film, but I thought they pulled it off. And enjoyed the songs too! There was applause at various points at the showing I was at!

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 22/12/2018 18:10

Watch out for Meryl Streep - she's excellent. As always.

Foslady · 22/12/2018 18:19

Loved it - and that Mary Poppins to me wasn’t quite so sugary sweet, more to the books.
Lost track of how many teary bits I had!

SleighBellsRing · 22/12/2018 19:00

We saw it today and loved it. Yes it was different but we expected that. Lovely bit of escapism!

HairyToity · 22/12/2018 19:24

I haven't seen it was put off by the casting of Emily Blunt. Think it needed a better singer. Someone off west end. Or maybe Samantha Barks.

bertielab · 22/12/2018 19:27

I took the DC today -we all loved it.

ShirleyEllis · 23/12/2018 10:53

Anybody know whether or not it would be pushing it for a nearly three year old?! Would be our first cinema trip (not counting baby friendly screenings when he was teeny tiny!). He’s got a decent attention span but haven’t tried a whole film yet.

Bottomplasters · 23/12/2018 10:55

I thought it was quite dark. I was bored.
