Anyone else been to see it?

I can't stand Meryl Streep so that's put me off seeing it

WardrobeInCrisis · 23/12/2018 11:12

I am looking forward to it tomorrow!

Goneback2school · 23/12/2018 11:17

I brought 3.5yr old dd yesterday, I was worried about her sitting through the full two hours but she did and she loved the music. We really enjoyed it.

southeastdweller · 23/12/2018 11:20

Mary seemed oddly pointless in this film. Emily Blunt's accent was also weird (apparently she was trying to imitate Princess Margaret). The songs were really disappointing as well.

AlwaysWantedToBeATenenbaum · 23/12/2018 12:01

I was so excited to see it but apart from when she first flew in on the kite and at the end when Dick Van Dyke appeared I just thought it was boring - I fell asleep during the bowl but.
There was no point in the Meryl Streep bit at all because they never went back for the bloody bowl in the end.
All the songs were crap apart from the last one with the balloons.
Loved Ben Whishaw but the man who played Jack really annoyed me. Emily Blunt’s version of Mary also was too happy/smiley for me. But that’s just me!
I’ll stick to the original from now on.

FrankieChips · 23/12/2018 12:04

I saw clips of it on Graham Norton and I really didn’t like the sound of Emily Blunt’s accent. It sounded like an American trying to do posh English. Julie Andrews had a ‘posh’ accent but she also sounded kind. Emily just sounds snobby. And I usually like her.

Bottomplasters · 23/12/2018 13:04

I couldn’t get my head around how tiny Mary’s waist was!

I saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it.. I felt like I was going to cry about 17 times!

Lin Manuel Miranda was exceptional.

Starlight456 · 23/12/2018 16:43

Going tomorrow .

Isitme13 · 23/12/2018 19:12

I really liked it. Lots of nice nods to the original, lovely old film feel, great all round, apart from Emily Blunt. A few times throughout I ended up thinking ‘this would be magnificent if only there was a better Mary’

She wasn’t awful, but the accent grated, and she just didn’t fit the part well.

Loopytiles · 23/12/2018 19:15

Ok, but only OK.

AGHHHH · 23/12/2018 19:39

Yeah I really enjoyed it.

Her accent sounded a bit dodgy though and she's a good enough singer but not outstanding.

I also found it odd when she was on stage performing in a Cockney accent! Seemed so unfitting for her. Xmas Smile

AGHHHH · 23/12/2018 19:41

Julie Andrews did also have a posh accent but... It's her actual accent isn't it? It sounded natural.

Stickywhitelovepiss · 23/12/2018 20:05

Emily Blunt amazing, premise good, nice to see the cameos etc....

But, listening to the original soundtrack now, nothing at all of the pathos that even as an adult make MP actually pretty heart-rendering viewing.

Kids will like it, though...

Dowser · 23/12/2018 20:32

Didn’t like it anywhere near enough as the original
Songs were instantly forgettable
Mr banks moustache had a life of its own
Emily blunt was ok, hated her raunchy , vaudeville act...just so misplaced...I just loved the way the original Mary poppinsnever stepped out of character In The animation
Jack seemed a bit miscast
Yes, it was very dark
Colin Firth was wasted in it
Found the admiral bit really boring
Found Julie Walters character irritating and I love her
2/10

Bottomplasters · 23/12/2018 21:26

The admiral bit was really odd and pointless. Is that in the original?

Esqueleto · 23/12/2018 21:30

I did find Emily Blunt's accent a bit ott I must admit but overall I really enjoyed it and think kids seeing this will love it as much as my generation liked the original.
I haven't read the books but I plan to so it'll be interesting to see how both screen Marys compare to the book character.
The songs in the new film felt like they wouldn't be out of place in the stage musical; not quite like the original film but I still enjoyed them.
I also loved the costumes; the new Mary is stylish AF!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 24/12/2018 08:17

I thought the costumes were excellent

MsPavlichenko · 24/12/2018 09:16

Yes. Admiral is a character in the first film, as is Miss Lark, though her dog is Andrew then. Both are in the books too. Mark Kermode gives it a good review, and he was very anxious about it, I agree with him.

Dowser · 24/12/2018 10:17

Treated myself to a couple of the Julie Andrews/ dick van dyke songs before bed and honestly think the original was far, far superior.

Think I might plonk myself down in front of the tv at 5 pm to watch it ( erase the other one from my mind).
Might grab my granddaughter

vinoandbrie · 24/12/2018 11:25

We saw it yesterday in 4DX, absolutely loved it, but I’m not sure how much of the love was for the 4DX experience rather than for the film itself, which was quite fun and made me feel nostalgic for the original.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 24/12/2018 11:46

My DD, aged 7, was really scared by the chase/kidnap/wolf scene, just as an FYI to anyone else with quite sensitive children. I was quite surprised by how much peril there was, though it is a PG, not a U, so I guess I shouldn’t have been!

Lin Manuel Miranda is amazing and can do no wrong. Ben Whishaw was dire. The youngest child (George?) was adorable.

PrivateEggnog · 24/12/2018 13:56

I'm going to see it over the holidays. I don't think anything could compare to the original, especially the songs by the Sherman brothers, but I'll try to go with an open mind!

I'm intrigued by the PP who said it was a lot closer to the books, as the original famously wasn't.

NotReve · 24/12/2018 14:16

I saw it today and I absolutely loved it; felt like crying all the way through!

paw1977 · 24/12/2018 15:12
