OP posts:
AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 16:27

@Whatsallthisaboutthen it's not a PG it is a U Xmas Smile

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 24/12/2018 16:53

It was fabulous!! Didn't think i would enjoy it so much. 10 and 8 year old girls enjoyed it but wouldn't know much of the original

shineyshell · 24/12/2018 17:14

I saw it today on my own and really enjoyed it, I came out of the cinema feeling all magical and smileyXmas Smile

Toomanycats99 · 24/12/2018 17:19

It was ok. I thought the first half was a bit boring and wasn't sure I would make it to the end. It picked up in the second half.

However my sister loved it as did my DD's so I was in the minority!

GreenFieldsofFrance · 24/12/2018 18:05

I loved it. Yes the songs are not instantly memorable but then I think I only know the originals because I watched it about 65,000 times :) I liked that Emily Blunt played Mary a bit darker and i cried at the end like a baffoon.

StickyProblem · 24/12/2018 18:51

I'm trying to sit through the original now. Turgid and dated. The kids stand about while loads of random adults have a riot. Julie Andrews is smug and menacing although her figure is fabulous. I just don't get it.

Gimmeesugar · 24/12/2018 20:15

I watched he original too - sure it’s a bit dated, but it’s still fucking amazing. I love the message

KissingInTheRain · 24/12/2018 20:26

Julie Andrews is smug and menacing

That’s part of the idea isn’t it? She’s flawed. She may be mysteriously capable, but she’s vain, likes a drink, is impatient, sometimes sharp, likes to show off, etc. Yet, ultimately, she cares about the children and the love between them and their parents more than anything else.

And the songs and music are superb.

I think the original’s a work of minor genius TBH.

ILoveDolly · 24/12/2018 20:33

It is Mary Poppins but a new one. I don't know what people are expecting. Its set during the Great Depression so it is a little darker than the original but otherwise has all the components you would expect and some fun cameos. Worth seeing? Yes. Best film ever made? No

KTD27 · 24/12/2018 20:42

I saw it yesterday. Got a very emotional wave of nostalgia before the credits even rolled at the beginning just from seeing 17 cherry tree lane. Thought it was a lovely film, charming set and Emily Blunt I thought was good - I mean how can you not compare her really but she did very Well.
It totally suffered from a lack of songs which stick to the soul. No spoonful of sugar, superkalafragelistic, let’s go fly a kite. Nothing in the same ballpark even. I’d struggle to hum any of them

MorrisZapp · 24/12/2018 20:51

Mark Kermode says Mary Poppins is in the top ten films ever made.

Starlight456 · 24/12/2018 23:02

I enjoyed it as did my son.

I thought Emma did a fantastic job today f Mary Poppins.

Whatsallthisaboutthen · 25/12/2018 08:07

AGHHHH oh really! I looked it up and thought I saw PG-I blame the Christmas gin 🤣 for a U, that chase scene is pretty frightening then I think.

GlassLantern · 25/12/2018 18:14

The sweep was awful, was his accent meant to be a joke like dick van dyke?

I fell asleep, my df slept all the way through but he is ill.

It was ok but certainly not memorable.

GlassLantern · 25/12/2018 18:15

Emily blunt was good, she saved it

Compared to Paddington which is similar it was very poor

Happierwithouthim · 25/12/2018 20:45

I also saw original about 65000 times and returns didn't lead up to my expectations maybe I expected too much, loved the bath scene reminiscent of her finding everything in her bag in original film, Michaels moustache also annoyed me & didn't really enjoy jane's character either.

My sis thought the same & dc sang greatest Showman all the way home Grin

AlbertWinestein · 29/12/2018 00:05

It was, without a doubt, the worst movie I've seen in the whole of 2018. And that includes watching Mama Mia Here We Go Again. Twice.

I love Emily Blunt (she is brilliant in A Quiet Place) but even she couldn't carry this carnage. And if there ever any doubt that L-M Miranda's ego is running blindly out of control, this proves it.

KissingInTheRain · 30/12/2018 17:22

I didn’t think it was as bad as Albert found it. But even if it’s not a total stinker, it’s still a bit whiffy.

Major faults are that it’s 30 minutes too long and the music is indifferent.

Emilys Blunt and Mortimer are inevitably fantastic. Ben Whishaw’s OK. Colin Firth is Colin Firth. Julie Walters is Julie Walters.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is either bloody awful or giving us a fine screen homage of great insight and deep affection. I’ll settle for bloody awful.

AGHHHH · 30/12/2018 18:01

Yeah the music sucks. I can only remember the cover is not the book and only that line... It's not uplifting and catchy at all.

ShesABelter · 30/12/2018 18:21

I love the original and was so looking forward to it. We went Xmas eve and I hated it. I hated Emily Blunts over the top accent. Hated the ridiculous cockney performance with Jack who I also didn't enjoy as a character. The story as a whole was shite. George Banks was irritating. Don't remember any songs at all. Seriously disappointed. My eldest fell asleep and the other two were bored.

wannabebetter · 30/12/2018 18:54

DSIS & I (49 & 59) went yesterday and LOVED it - especially the undersea sequence early on, and Mary's bag!! (Somebody please start selling trendy carpet bags!!) The songs were great & could have been written by the original songwriters, same structure & catchy bits! Especially Place Where The List Things Go which left us both with 'something in our eyes'! Emily Blunt is fantastic & we thought great to see a more edgy Mary!

wannabebetter · 30/12/2018 18:55

*lost things...

thisisjustdaft · 31/12/2018 18:36

Took a 20 year old and a senior citizen this afternoon, and both loved it. DD said it makes her want to be a child again, and MIL said that it was lovely and nostalgic. I liked it quite a lot actually, and enjoyed playing 'spot the random bit of London they are filming in now'.

The songs were ok, and I went to the loo in the cinema afterwards, and there was a kid in there singing one of the songs. So memorable enough for that Smile

Groovee · 31/12/2018 18:48

I loved it. More like the stage show but Mary's accent wasn't right. The songs weren't as memorable as the original but I liked the story line and the young actors were really good.

Anyone notice that the actress who played Jane in the original was in the sequel?

Esqueleto · 31/12/2018 18:52

Anyone notice that the actress who played Jane in the original was in the sequel?

Was she the lady that asked for directions? If so I didn't know who she was but thought it must be significant as it seemed a pointless addition.
