What phone does your Year 7 dc have?

My 11 year old dd inherited her sister's old iPhone 5s when she started secondary school in September. She is already campaigning for a new one. She's been moaning it doesn't work properly.

I've had a look at it tonight and she does have a point - it doesn't seem to connect to the wifi very well and she has trouble using various apps.

Dh thinks it would be spoiling her to get her a new phone so soon but he isn't yet aware of the problems she's been having.

What phones do your dc have and how often do you replace/upgrade?

I should also say that I also have a 5s and I'm not sure about my 11 year old having a better phone than me!

DS1 in year 7 has an iPhone SE and DD in year 6 is getting an SE for Christmas. Both me and DH have SEs
They are basically the workings of a 6 but in a 5 size body.

11 year old has a 5SE (if that’s the right name), bought second hand though. It inspired me to swap my 5s for a better one!

iPhone 5se. If she can look after it for a year (or two) she might get an upgrade Smile

Titsywoo · 17/12/2018 21:01

11 year old has my old Samsung S7 and 14 year old has the same but a new one that she got on contract last year (after she had proven she could be responsible with a mobile for 2 years - she had a used S4 mini first).

Titsywoo · 17/12/2018 21:02

I would say get her another second hand one. We got ours at CEX. I wouldn't give an 11 year old a very new phone - too risky.

Elfinablender · 17/12/2018 21:03

An iPhone 5s and I'm not ever going to change it until he actually picks up the phone when I ring it.

ShowOfHands · 17/12/2018 21:04

The cheapest available basic Samsung.

Toomanybaubles · 17/12/2018 21:05

iPhone SE for £15 a month 12 month contract with Tesco £85 paid upfront to reduce the monthly cost.

Toomanybaubles · 17/12/2018 21:06

Previously an old family hand down 5s but the battery was knackered and the SIM only was £9 a month.

anothermansmother · 17/12/2018 21:07

Iphone 7, it was mine but I upgraded. So far he's really looked after it.

Sidge · 17/12/2018 21:07

Mine had a 5S but when I upgraded to the 7 she inherited my old 6S. Her 5 was getting really glitchy.

She’s very good with it and takes care of it.

iPhone 5SE second hand

twosoups1972 · 17/12/2018 21:19

Thank you, I have always bought second hand phones outright then shopped around for a good SIM only deal.

Wonder how much a second hand 6 might cost me....

Don’t have DC but my (nearly) 11 year old nephew has the 8 🙄

twosoups1972 · 17/12/2018 21:24

@Sidge that's what dd says - it keeps glitching. When I looked at it today, I could see that she can't even use the bus times app she downloaded, even when it's connected to the wifi.

Is it a big hassle when you change phones? How do you get all your contacts, photos etc?

Jenniferturkington · 17/12/2018 21:25

He has my old SE. I have an iPhone 7 and actually miss the SE! I paid a tenner to get one of those plastic screen protectors stuck on to it for him.

twosoups1972 · 17/12/2018 21:28

So if I also have a 5s (same as dd) which works reasonably ok but battery doesn't last long, would you give her that one and get an upgrade myself? Or get her a new one? Or get us both new ones? Grin

SE second hand was about £130 in very good condition. I think a 6 was about £25 more from memory. You can easily check on music magpie though.

BlueJag · 17/12/2018 21:31

Our year 8 son has an iPhone 6 that he got when I upgraded mine.

BlueJag · 17/12/2018 21:32

There is an app to transfer all your data from one phone to another.

makingmiracles · 17/12/2018 21:32

An huwai honor p9 brand new, £150. Don’t buy into the whole iPhone thing when to me it seems your paying for the name, what exactly do they do that any decent smartphone doesn’t?!

twosoups1972 · 17/12/2018 21:36

makingmiracles we are an Apple family, there’s no going back. Dd wouldn’t be able to FaceTime without an iPhone.

Nokia brick.

I have an iPhone 5! Grin

He's actually quite happy to have an excuse not to be involved in all the whatsapping which has already turned sour before the end of the first term
