What phone does your Year 7 dc have?

My 11 year old dd inherited her sister's old iPhone 5s when she started secondary school in September. She is already campaigning for a new one. She's been moaning it doesn't work properly.

I've had a look at it tonight and she does have a point - it doesn't seem to connect to the wifi very well and she has trouble using various apps.

Dh thinks it would be spoiling her to get her a new phone so soon but he isn't yet aware of the problems she's been having.

What phones do your dc have and how often do you replace/upgrade?

I should also say that I also have a 5s and I'm not sure about my 11 year old having a better phone than me!

Back up to the cloud, and when you set up the new phone restore from cloud.

Rockbird · 17/12/2018 21:48

You can buy a reconditioned iPhone for less than £150 and you know what you're getting. You're not paying for just the name, you're paying for something that actually works and isn't going to conk out after a couple of months. I've seen it happen so many times. False economy.

Ds1 gets Dh's old phone. Ds2 gets ds1's old phone. I too agree that they don't work that well. Ds2 currently has an i phone 6.

iPhone 7 given by Dad recently when he upgraded. Had a hand me down 5 previously.

DS2 is year 6 and has DHs old iPhone 6 work phone that he got to keep.

ThunderStorms · 17/12/2018 22:06

How much do you pay monthly for these phones?

Beamur · 17/12/2018 22:07

iPhone 5 here too. Works perfectly well for how it's intended to be used. Am buying a friends iPhone 7 when she upgrades next year but not telling DD until it happens. Will be a nice surprise.

Beamur · 17/12/2018 22:09

Bought it outright, not new, cost about £100. Wanted Apple as we have a mac at home and it's all connected. Just pay monthly for SIM.

cloudtree · 17/12/2018 22:09

How much do you pay monthly for these phones?

mine both have second hand reconditioned SEs in very good condition £130 each.

Contracts are monthly £15 each for 10GB of data and unlimited calls and texts

Starlight456 · 17/12/2018 22:11

My DS has my old iphone 5S. He has broke the screen once . Has screen protector on now.

I upgraded to Iphone 6 so i had the better phone. Also so my old eyes can read better

We have a sim only contract. I pay £10 a month I think

JiltedJohnsJulie · 17/12/2018 22:11

DD gets less data at £8 per month. The phone was bought —though might be sold again soon if she doesn’t start behaving—

RightOcciputAnterior · 17/12/2018 22:17

DSD has her mum's old Samsung S6 and it works well. It's not flashy enough to make her a mugging target, but it's not old enough to be significantly glitchy.

ChoudeBruxelles · 17/12/2018 22:17

Ds. Year 8 has had my old iPhone 6 since year 7.

Toomanycats99 · 17/12/2018 22:29

My dd has a 6s / I actually ended up taking out a contract as it didn't work out much more over 2 years than buying a second hand phone (from reputable shop not from a random on eBay) and paying sim only.

HannahnotAgnes · 17/12/2018 22:30

My DS, yr 7, had my old iPhone 5 originally but last month gave him my old iPhone 7 as I was upgrading.

JohnnyBGood · 17/12/2018 22:40

Xiaomi mi A1 - £145 read the reviews

Bunnyjo · 17/12/2018 22:41

DD is in year 7. She had an iPhone SE, but recently inherited my iPhone 7 when I upgraded.

xyzandabc · 17/12/2018 22:45

A Moto g5 plus I think or similar. But we are an android/Google household. None of us have Apple devices so don't need to pay the excessive money for i devices.

I have the same phone as her. About £120 to buy outright then £7.50 a month PAYG with gift gaff. I pay £10 for my Giffgaff bundle as I use more data than her.

sophisticatedsarcasm · 17/12/2018 22:55

My DS year 6 has a iPhone SE, he has it as he walks partway to school by himself. I barely uses it, just sits on the side the rest of the time. Unless we go out he uses it.

BrieAndChilli · 18/12/2018 07:31

We pay £10 a month for unlimited calls and texts plus some data for DS iPhone SE, we didn’t pay anything up front for the phone

mejon · 18/12/2018 07:59

DD got a Motorola E or C or G3 or 4 (can't remember!) - cost around £80 last year. We are all with BT so get calls and enough data for £5 each a month.

southnownorth · 18/12/2018 08:01

iphone SE. Of course she wants the latest iphone, but I won't let her have such an expensive phone for school.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 18/12/2018 08:05

She doesn't have a phone.

LegoandiPads · 18/12/2018 08:30

Iphone6s. Because there was a family spare one. I’m not sure i’d have been as generous otherwise.

FOTTOSOFTFOSM · 18/12/2018 10:38

Mine have iPhone SEs, they were new in Sept. The contract is £15 a month for more data, minutes and texts than they will likely use. Phone was free with contract. They don't need anything better. The phones do everything they need and more.

joan12 · 18/12/2018 10:43

Nokia brick. His (super selective) school do not recommend smart phones in year 7. Obviously plenty go against this and have them but we see no benefit. He and his friends text to arrange to walk home together etc and there have been WhatsApp shenanigans that he is pleased to be protected from.
