What phone does your Year 7 dc have?

My 11 year old dd inherited her sister's old iPhone 5s when she started secondary school in September. She is already campaigning for a new one. She's been moaning it doesn't work properly.

I've had a look at it tonight and she does have a point - it doesn't seem to connect to the wifi very well and she has trouble using various apps.

Dh thinks it would be spoiling her to get her a new phone so soon but he isn't yet aware of the problems she's been having.

What phones do your dc have and how often do you replace/upgrade?

I should also say that I also have a 5s and I'm not sure about my 11 year old having a better phone than me!

My has a iPhone 5s too and that's not working properly either (unfortunately both DH and I have non- working iPhone 5S' too so nothing to hand down).
We've said we'd get him a new one for his birthday in May, but probably a second hand one.

A brick. No camera and no internet access.
His mates think it's a novelty but no one has been nasty about it.
His battery never runs out and it's indestructible.

I know it's easier said than done, but yr7s shouldn't have WhatsApp - users are meant to be 16. I explained this to my DD and pointed out that you don't need it anyway to keep in touch with your friends, plus not having it means you avoid all the silliness around it. So, she's quite happy not to have it.

Y5 but needs it for school bus. A motorola that cost about £80. No way is she having an iphone when I don't!

My y8 ds has a Samsung j3 which he had last year. He's always moaning that EVERYONE has an iphone. He's saved a decent amount from birthday and with xmas money he's going to get a second-hand iphone 6. I have a Huawei. I'm not going to buy him an expensive phone until he's a lot older.

Dd11 has the iPhone X. FIL gave it to her for christmas last year. Completely wasted on her.

@megletthesecond
I was worried he would be missing out and not making new friends if he wasn't on WhatsApp etc but the school line was very clear and parents with children in older years said it works well. So tbh it was a leap of faith that I am very glad we made. We'll stick to it until the end of year 8 at least and by then he'll hopefully have established a very different mode of phone use, as will most of his friends.

My DD, almost 12, is getting an iPhone 8 for xmas. She currently has an Xperia of sorts which she's had for 2 years and has looked after impeccably. She won't be getting a new phone for 3 years so didn't want to get too old a model which wouldn't be able to keep up with updates.
