I’m dreaming of an early 90s Christmas

I’m a child of the 80s (born in 77) so am usually nostalgic for those days at christmas time, but for some reason I’m suddenly craving the christmases of my teens:

Shopping with my mates in the newly opened shopping centre and going for a Burger King (FANCY compared to McDonalds back then because it was a novelty), deliberating over which Body Shop gift basket to buy my mum - white musk, dewberry or go rogue and get ananya?

Will my BFF buy me Tribe perfume for Christmas or a Purple Ronnie mug? When is the One Foot in the Grave Christmas special on? Will my dad let me have some Babycham? (Still a thing in the 90s) Can I convince my mum to put up the tacky foil garland decorations instead of all the new Victorian themed stuff that she bought last year when she decided it was all too dated?

Will the sound of christmas morning be a Now album or the Smash Hits compilation? There’s bound to be one of those in my stocking. And will my festive makeup look be created with Miners eyeshadow or the lurid M&S palette that everyone had back then? (Heather Shimmer lipsticks was non negotiable).

Sorry if it’s been mentioned but I loved the Vicar of Dibley at Christmas back then, the one where Geraldine eats loads of massive Christmas dinners and at one point gets a taxi from one side of the road to the other had me in stitches. I remember another couple of 90s presents as well, the book that accompanied the Titanic film, and the Titanic soundtrack (which is actually really depressing so I gave it to my friend)

HelenaDove · 17/12/2018 20:11

According to the Christmas Radio Times that episode of The Vicar of Dibley is on BBC1 this Saturday.

Haven't rtft but I am getting nostalgic and misty-eyed from what I have read.

Hmmm 90s Christmas, I was just a kid (born 86) but I distinctly recall getting my puffalump and my sweetshop one year with real edible sweets! I remember the year me and my brother both got Werebears. They were cool.

I had a black crushed velvet dress I remember wearing to the school Christmas disco and dancing to Cotton-eyed Joe in it.

Getting a bit older so more mid-90s I had one of those bodycon thingies with the popper buttons. I used to call it a leotard.

I lived in checked shirts and jeans - proper grungey. I had a velvet choker that went with an outfit my mum bought me.

I recall me and my older sister having matching outfits that consisted of a floral shirt, a purple cardigan and the most awful purple culottes. We thought we were the bees knees.

My sister has purple Ascot trainers. We shared a bedroom and I hated her taste in music. I remember when she used to listen to "Another night, another dream but always you" on repeat. As well as "this is the rhythm of the night" and trying to explain to me how cool Corona were.

I used to nick her Charlie Red and Charlie Sunshine perfumes when she was out. Along with her make up. I bought her a white musk gift set one Christmas. Another Christmas I bought her Boyzone - No Matter What as a single on cassette. I was a bloody good little sister lol.

Does anyone remember "shag bands"? More of a mid-90s thing?

Wilhelminawonka · 17/12/2018 20:18

I'm hoping to get a fractal poster from Athena.

HelenaDove · 17/12/2018 20:20

Woohoo1 · 17/12/2018 20:23

77 baby also, I drew skulls on my Doc Martin’s with tip ex !!

alansleftfoot · 17/12/2018 20:25

Feeling the need to buy a Magic Eye poster from Athena and then spend hours staring at the bloody thing but seeing nowt !

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 17/12/2018 20:35

Wish I’d kept my DM’s now I had several pairs. Black, cherry, bottle green, and a few patterned ones. Ds who is almost 13 is desperate for a pair but they are so expensive along with everything else on her list it’s a no. But if I hadn’t have thrown them out most of them were in perfect condition.

Benjaminbuttonschild · 17/12/2018 20:35

I couldn't stand the Mr. Blobby song that made the Christmas number one single. That's a memory that need to be burned out of my brain forever.

Born in 78... Xmas 94 I was 16... getting ready to go and meet my mates at the park.. wearing my black DM's and black pinafore dress with a bodysuit underneath it.. sprayed myself with exclamation and got the must have heather shimmer. I've been using sun in ( using the hair dryer to make it dye 😂) so I've got two lovely blond/ gingery streaks in my hair ( I looked the dogs danglies) sneaking out a bottle of taboo to share with my mates and going halves on a pack of 10 lambert and butler. Xmas day will involve me being hungover and being woken up by my younger brother and sisters at 4 am and us all waking my parents up. The lounge is full of presents and tacky decorations. My dad is sat wearing a battered dressing gown and his annual festive slippers and my mum is nursing a strong cup of tea and smoking a menthol cigarette. My brothers are arguing over the mega drive and my little sister is getting giddy over a doll that pees 🙄 I disappear off into my bedroom to play my new oasis album at full blast before my dad comes into tell me to "turn that shit off" Xmas lunch is is all crammed around a tiny table elbowing each other. Massive plates of food that we never finish and the usual "just eat one sprout" from my mum plea. Lots of noise and laughter. Then off to watch top of the pops while dad snores. Awww take me back 😍

Sofacomfy · 17/12/2018 21:00

So glad you started this thread! Loving all the memories everyone has mentioned! I remember in the late 80s we had a white, artificial Xmas tree adorned in really vibrant, glass baubles. I remember getting a velvet hat for Xmas in the 90s and one of those plastic dummy necklaces and a troll!! I also received Big Mix 96 on CD and thought I was proper cool!!!

Sofacomfy · 17/12/2018 21:03

Also reminiscent of Sun-in hair dye and shag bands!!
Does anyone remember those tops that came out in the 90s that all had logos on such as '90% angel' etc?

MissMarplesKnitting · 17/12/2018 21:06

No, but I remember global hypercolour and fat Willy's surf shack t shirts!

namastayinbed · 17/12/2018 21:07

Yes to all of this, lovely thread. Best Xmas eve was going to collect my doc marten boots from the nearest town.

chimichangapie · 17/12/2018 21:12

Those adverts were amazing. The wicker duck with smellies in took me right back! I had so many of those knocking about.

beadyboo · 17/12/2018 21:15

No one has mentioned oil burners, I had at least 4 or teasels (?) - a sort of spikey pine cone fashioned into a hedgehog type creature (often in a satin frock!!) Totally pointless gift, but Boots was full of them.
I miss the 90s. The shell suits, the tartan , the velvet jackets...
I wore LouLou, Chloe Narcisse and Georgio Beverley Hills and my mum wore Opium

Sofacomfy · 17/12/2018 21:17

Omg the wicker ducks! Remember these!
Velvet chokers too! Gladiators on TV on a Saturday night. I used to fancy the one called Warrior and met him once and got his autograph (cringe)
Sweater Shop jumpers?? Had one of those and wore it until it fell apart!

Flaskfan · 17/12/2018 21:31

Hedgehog hairbrushes. Everyone had pocket hairbrushes. As an adukt, I am pretty well.groomed, yet manage to go everyday without needing to continually brush my hair.

hmmwhatatodo · 17/12/2018 21:32

It’s the very early 90s and I’m really hoping for a head bag, preferably in lilac and pink so I can use it for my school bag but I won’t get one. Also a makeup compact with loads of different things inside, especially those sticky lipsticks that you apply with a tiny brush, most of which are shimmery.

Flaskfan · 17/12/2018 21:35

Xmas day 1996: long, purple skirt and offspring t shirt. That skirt has lasted 22 years!

thisonebreath · 17/12/2018 21:37

Also born in 1977 and remember all these things. Christmas 1992 I'm wearing my new Nirvana t-shirt, short frayed denim shorts, patterned tights and DMs. Grin I miss the 90s. I had an awesome time from start to finish.

I think what I actually miss is the freedom from stress. These days I have eleventy billion things to remember and little people depend on me. I had no real commitments or responsibilities in the 90s - my time and money were my own.

Craftycorvid · 17/12/2018 21:57

Can I join in the nostalgia? 60s baby here. In my 20s and a student in the early 90s. Remember all the fashions and still into some of them now - Dr Martens devotee for one thing! Used to love the grunge look. Had a floppy velvet hat too (probably looked like an ambulant lampshade in it). Bodies were sooo uncomfortable though, especially if you had boobs (and I did). I must have looked like a badly stuffed cushion, what with that and the very baggy jeans. I used to love River Island! Remember when they had the vintage-themed decor involving old sewing machines and decoupage everywhere? I miss it Sad

GabsAlot · 17/12/2018 22:10

i had a purple head bag oh i love that thing

also velvet chokers as and my hotpants wouldntbe seen dead now

jacqattacq · 17/12/2018 22:31

Wicker ducks! With pastel coloured toiletries and a flannel inside them! I’d completely forgotten that they existed but everyone had at least one.

I’m so glad you’re all getting as much joy from this thread as I am.
