I’m dreaming of an early 90s Christmas

I’m a child of the 80s (born in 77) so am usually nostalgic for those days at christmas time, but for some reason I’m suddenly craving the christmases of my teens:

Shopping with my mates in the newly opened shopping centre and going for a Burger King (FANCY compared to McDonalds back then because it was a novelty), deliberating over which Body Shop gift basket to buy my mum - white musk, dewberry or go rogue and get ananya?

Will my BFF buy me Tribe perfume for Christmas or a Purple Ronnie mug? When is the One Foot in the Grave Christmas special on? Will my dad let me have some Babycham? (Still a thing in the 90s) Can I convince my mum to put up the tacky foil garland decorations instead of all the new Victorian themed stuff that she bought last year when she decided it was all too dated?

Will the sound of christmas morning be a Now album or the Smash Hits compilation? There’s bound to be one of those in my stocking. And will my festive makeup look be created with Miners eyeshadow or the lurid M&S palette that everyone had back then? (Heather Shimmer lipsticks was non negotiable).

And also my dad was really tight. The Griffin savers bank account from the Midland Bank with the free sports bag Etc. My Dad saved it and wrapped it up for Christmas.

I had a savings account from my grandparents with all the NatWest pigs up to the Mum.

Rayn · 18/12/2018 23:15

Wearing my russet in gold Rimmel lipstick, a babydol dress with a t shirt underneath ! Listening to snap and 2 unlimited.
In my local listening to Rhythm is a dancer and drinking castaway x

Yes to EVERYTHING ON THIS THREAD.

But in the interests of accuracy, I am a '72-er so early 90s was clubbing/raving for me so I'm getting a pair of kickers which will replace my Chipie trainers, a ton-sur-ton sweatshirt, some dungarees from Kensington Market (can't afford Hyper Hyper) and I will be wearing these with my most treasured Katherine Hamnet Body and a spritz of Issy Miyake. L'Eeau D'issey.

I am really hoping for a Discman (cutting edge tech)from my parents, and my boyfriend will probably get me some silk babydoll number from La Senza and a box of Toffifee.

But frankly, gift vouchers from any of these shops would be amazing:

Thanks for that trip down memory lane, SlightlyJaded

PeroniZuchini · 19/12/2018 00:18

Oh thanks Slightlyjaded for the link. Kookai and Morgan were my go-to shops as a student clubber in the mid to late nineties! I can’t believe they closed down, they were the biz back in the day.

And Past Times...wtf was all that about?!

purplegoat · 19/12/2018 00:20

That link was great slightlyjaded I'd forgotten about Pepe Jeans, I still have a couple of the keyrings you used to get knocking around.

They missed Bay Trading Co off that list though (and I'm sure there's still a Wittard's in my home town). I loved Bay Trading.

Frogletmamma · 19/12/2018 01:45

I remember unfortunately the Christmas I started work. It was the night of the works do. Everyone was taking it in turns to get the new girl drunk. But I had a two hour car journey to meet the now mil and fil. Was horribly sick in their car. But weirdly didn't have hangover.

Kahlua4me · 19/12/2018 07:10

NancyDonahue Blackbush market was the place to be! 😊

Isitmybathtimeyet · 19/12/2018 09:45

I love this thread. I lost my mum in my mid-teens so my early Christmases are treasured memories of feeling wholly happy and excited. It took a long time to get that feeling back.

Crushed velvet, long skirts, DMs and fringes all the way. Loved my hats and my yin yang jewellery. White Musk immediately takes me back to my first date.

I had a Boots own brand tape Walkman thing that had speakers so I could listen to tapes in the bath, and it worked as a dictaphone too. So amazing!

And I hadn't thought about whicker ducks in decades. I bet I've got mine in the attic still.

AllYeFaithful · 19/12/2018 11:24

I’d forgotten about Ton-Sur-Tom, SlightlyJaded! And Chipie, Chevignon, Naf Naf all spring to mind now, too.

Kensington Market and Hyper Hyper! Memory lane....

newnameallround · 19/12/2018 13:01

This thread made me realise this morning that I still use Rimmel hide the blemish as my concealer of choice-25 years on!

ThistleAmore · 19/12/2018 14:30

I had a much older sister to influence my musical tastes, so no Take That or E17 for me - I was all about Tom Waits and Bowie and Television and thinking about how cool I was!

I watched TotP and listened to John Peel obsessively, though - recording Pulp, Belle & Sebastian etc, but STOPPING THE TAPE AT THE TALKY BITS, which kills me now: what I wouldn't give to hear a full Peel Session again...

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 20/12/2018 00:16

bugaboo Was it Vanilla Fields by any chance?

I’m dreaming of an early 90s Christmas
FairyFace · 20/12/2018 21:25

Oh this brings me back I was born early 80s but remember murdering myself in the sample bottle of tribe in the local dept store after school. Then buying myself a bottle for xmas, do you know they sell that now on their own website, quite expensive compared to the 4 pound I paid back then.

Christmas isn't the same anymore, but I know we have to move with the times. I remember Spice girls 2become1 song coming out and my best friend bought me the cassette single as my Christmas present, I played , rewinded and played again all Christmas day haha

ShadowHuntress · 20/12/2018 21:34

Born in 80 here and I would give anything to go back to the 90s even just for one day! My favourite Xmas was 92 when I was 12. I got a Walkman and some of my favourite cassettes.

I remember walking around my local high street with my friends in my dm’s and whatever clothes I had on probably from Tammy girl. Used to love that shop! All my friends were really into forever friends and Ann geddes so I ended up with loads of little ornaments and about 10 Ann geddes cards!

I loved ananya from body shop and they also did this watermelon sun blocking lip balm which smelt and tasted amazing. Makeup was mostly from Superdrug as we had a big one in our town which had a huge makeup section.

Music would always be our price or hmv. I loved woolies and c&a. We had a toys r us in our town as well which would always be a favourite place to visit with my friends.

We’d always have the £5 all you can eat at lunch at Pizza Hut but knew the girl who worked there and she would let two of us share one plate! I also loved Davidoff cool waters. I remember getting that in 94 I think and spraying it on everything. Also Charlie and exclamation.

I remembers one year my aunt got me colour me bad I wanna sex you up and my mum wouldn’t let me listen to it!!!

ShadowHuntress · 20/12/2018 21:37

Also m&s used to do these amazing cheese wrapped in bacon which would come out Xmas only. They stopped doing them now but they were so delicious. My mum would always get about 10 packs so we could eat them over the Xmas period and then we’d have to wait for th next Xmas to get them again

VioletCharlotte · 20/12/2018 21:51

Inspired by this thread, I went into the Body Shop today for the first time in years. They still sell White Musk, £18 a bottle though!

cheesenpickles · 20/12/2018 21:58

I have solved the mystery of the pink Christmas lights! Apparently they were painted red with a white light inside, but they looked linked because of it. Because now we use coloured LEDs they're a true red bow. I say bring back the pink lights!

Haggisfish · 20/12/2018 21:58

hmmwhatatodo · 20/12/2018 22:14

They don’t seem to sell the little perfume oil bottles with the plastic spreader in the body shop any more though. And that’s what I want!

Also used to love Anne Geddes. I recently found my very old Ann geddes address book that I bought mid 90s and spent ages looking over it.

Santababyclaus · 20/12/2018 22:18

@hmmwhatatodo I still have a dewberry one. I have a sniff every now again - it's too precious to actually use!

KisstheTeapot14 · 21/12/2018 23:47

patchouli oil. Oh my word that brings back memories BTWifi. I had a boyfriend in the 90's drenched in the stuff.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/12/2018 13:05

If any of you are national trust members, the house by me (and I think others will do the same) does a 70's and 80's nostalgia Christmas, with all the traditional toys and decorations.
