I’m dreaming of an early 90s Christmas

I’m a child of the 80s (born in 77) so am usually nostalgic for those days at christmas time, but for some reason I’m suddenly craving the christmases of my teens:

Shopping with my mates in the newly opened shopping centre and going for a Burger King (FANCY compared to McDonalds back then because it was a novelty), deliberating over which Body Shop gift basket to buy my mum - white musk, dewberry or go rogue and get ananya?

Will my BFF buy me Tribe perfume for Christmas or a Purple Ronnie mug? When is the One Foot in the Grave Christmas special on? Will my dad let me have some Babycham? (Still a thing in the 90s) Can I convince my mum to put up the tacky foil garland decorations instead of all the new Victorian themed stuff that she bought last year when she decided it was all too dated?

Will the sound of christmas morning be a Now album or the Smash Hits compilation? There’s bound to be one of those in my stocking. And will my festive makeup look be created with Miners eyeshadow or the lurid M&S palette that everyone had back then? (Heather Shimmer lipsticks was non negotiable).

I did that the other day, though then I invariably lose said listings magazine and never watch the stuff anyway.

nectarinenotpeach · 18/12/2018 07:56

chimichangapie- I worked at The Body Shop HQ for 5 years and I was a Tour Leader! I took people round the whole site on and off the tour bus, showing people everything from the first shop, the labs, right thought to the factories ( always an incredible smell every day) to the bottling, etc. Many a time I’d find a very tiny Anita Rodrick hidden in my tour group😳 It was THE BEST place to work and the happiest. My 12 year old daughter is so jealous that I worked there and that the tour is no longer there 😢

Ereshkigal · 18/12/2018 08:08

I still buy an Xmas TV magazine and circle things. Am I the only one?

No Smile only get one at Xmas.

Just remembered the giant Dustybin I got when I was about 8. From the tv show. It was to put all my soft toys in.
It sat in the corner of my room. Mine was bright Orange Grin

Russiawithlove · 18/12/2018 08:31

It was from the quiz show 3-2-1. The memories are flooding back. O to live in the 80s again.

tillytrotter1 · 18/12/2018 08:33

Every generation will have similar memories, in thirty years time your children will be having these chats so it's up to you to make sure they have good memories.
God, I'm getting maudling and philosophical today!

Russiawithlove · 18/12/2018 08:33

And also my dad was really tight. The Griffin savers bank account from the Midland Bank with the free sports bag Etc. My Dad saved it and wrapped it up for Christmas.

MamaLovesMango · 18/12/2018 08:38

YAS!!!

I was saying to DH that I want a Christmas of old next year. Not Dickensian, not Victorian, not Scandinavian, not Germanic... the Christmas’ of the 80s/90s!

Foil concertina decorations
Multicoloured flower shaped fairy lights
Tinsel and that shiny stringy stuff
A Radio Times (I still do this Blush)
Mirrorball baubles
So, so, so much tacky!

cheesenpickles · 18/12/2018 08:41

@nectarinenotpeach OMG! I remember thinking that must be the best job in the world. I used to see Anita in Arundel a lot and a girl I went to school with's dad worked there. Apparently they would go to dinner either in Amberley (where she lived) or at their house in Eastergate and she and him would climb over the fence when their oh's were distracted and go to the pub. Not sure how true it is but certainly sounds funny. Grin

nectarinenotpeach · 18/12/2018 08:46

cheesenpickles- most likely true! Anita was brilliantly nuts😂

SilkenTofu · 18/12/2018 09:36

On Sunday night I took much pleasure in sitting down with a glass of wine and spent a good hour highlighting all the things I am going to watch over Christmas in my TV mag. Grin

I miss...

Me with a Babycham, mum with her Advocaat.
My blue Sony Walkman and my The Pretenders cassette
My crackly old LP player and my NOW 11 album. I can still remember some of the bands - Ian Dury, The Tourists (not Eurythmics), The Pretenders (again)
Getting really upset if Christmas dinner clashed with TOTP's Christmas special.
M&S makeup. Rimel if you were really cool.

JudasPrudy · 18/12/2018 10:54

I remember getting my Kappa tracksuit bottoms with buttons all down the side. The neighbourhood boys used to make it a game to unpop them Xmas Grin

dolliebauble · 18/12/2018 11:45

Born 77 too. I'll be reading a book by Judy Blume. Eating all the coffee creams from the Roses tin. Roller skating round the house (even on carpets) in my rainbow striped roller boots. I'd have dangly plastic earrings on and really frizzy hair and a bad fringe. Would have loved straighteners back then! I'd play Blockbusters with my parents and Auntie and Uncle.. I'd be Bob because I wouldn't know the answers to any questions.

NameChanger22 · 18/12/2018 11:59

My best Christmases have all been in the last decade. I do miss 90s music though.

BooHasAPressieForYou · 18/12/2018 12:05

@JudasPrudy I would have been so jealous of your Kappa Poppers. I was banned from them. I did have a fake stussy flat cap though.

GabsAlot · 18/12/2018 13:51

im jealous russia a dusty bin!

April2020mom · 18/12/2018 15:08

I was born during the eighties (late 1988). The first Christmas I remember was twenty six years ago when I was a small 4 year old. My mom used to take me to our church’s annual carol singing service each year. As I got older I went to a Christmas movie with friends and visit Christmas markets. I loved growing up as a child of the nineties.

cheeseypuff · 18/12/2018 15:29

Ahhh reading through this thread has made me feel all warm & fuzzy & nostalgic for Christmas of the 90s (especially as I didn't have to cook it!)

Getting a White Musk gift basket from Body Shop (& never using the bath pearls or the soap!)
Going out to the pub as a 15 year old on Xmas Eve & praying you'd be let in to nurse a half pint of sweet cider & black. Wearing your crushed velvet babydoll dress Grin
Being annoyed at parents who wanted to eat Christmas dinner at the exact time that TOTP was on telly.

nomorearsingmermaids · 18/12/2018 16:37

I was born in 1989 and a lot of this stuff relates to my noughties teen christmasses too!

OrangeCinnamon · 18/12/2018 18:32

Thatsalovelycuppatea · 18/12/2018 18:36

I loved 80's and 90's Christmas's. I had so many fabulous presents as a child. We weren't rich or had lots of money, but everything made me happy. And I have fond memories. Xmas Grin

QwertySmalls · 18/12/2018 21:01

Born 92' . I remember the shag bands. The urban Leg and was if someone broke it you would shag them or something so every one would try to hide them in fear of them breaking. I must be been so young but knew what shag meant.

clumsyduck · 18/12/2018 21:23

Loved reading this thread .
Born late 80s so consider myself a 90s kid

Remember food that wasn't to be touched till Xmas - nuts dates posh biscuits lemonade cola etc in glass bottles from the milk man !! Sounds mad now but stuff like that was a treat particularly when I was really young .

Double cassette recorder to tape the top 40 on trying to pause it before the presenter started talking !!

Polar bear shaped coconut soap from body shop and bath pearls !

Remember getting a portable tv and Super Nintendo for my room and thinking it was the greatest thing ever

School discos wearing lots of tartan !!

Christmas Eve seemed to go on forever there was always a big film on I remember watching Oliver for the first time one Christmas Eve and loving it

Great times

Equimum · 18/12/2018 21:43

I was born early 1980s. My teen Christmases involved Now cassettes (& later CDs), Collection 2000 make-up and the massive treat of a Boots Natural Collection gift set. I also recall the scent of Tribe perfume and Body Shop stationary!

My parents only drank at Christmas, and a bottle of Blue Nun lasted Christmas lunch and Boxing Day. We were also treated to a litre of Bitter Lemon!
