I've just watched The Holiday and now my toes need to be surgically unclenched

Worst film ever? Long, boring, weird, choppy editing, atrocious script, blatant Bridget Jones wannabe, and Jude fucking Law.

I've just realised I hadn't heard his voice before. Its the most unsexy voice this side of Jacob Rees Mogg.

Bizarre exercise montage in a pool.

World famous script writer with no friends until KW lovelies him.

When Diaz danced to the Killers I wanted to punch myself. I muted it and held on.

My sister in law watches this shite every year! I'm speechless. I don't want to see Jack Black kissing anybody, ever again. In fact I don't want to kiss anybody, ever again.

NO KISSING.

The Holiday should have worked but didn't. It had the cast, setting and storyline but it was still rubbish. I quite like Love Actually but Martine McCucheon must have been the worst bit of miscasting ever.

I lived in a village near Godalming called Bramley at the time of filming The Holiday. Driving back from the station one evening in May and had to jump on the brakes. The next quarter of a mile was covered in thick snow - fake obviously but looked great. The catering crew set up in the driveway and the station name changed for one evening so all quite exciting for the locals.

GoldenWonderwall · 12/12/2018 17:12

It’s terrible. Love Actually is terrible. They’re not twee and Christmassy they are nauseating and insult the intelligence of anyone who might be watching them in passing. They’ll make any old shite and label it as romantic comedy when it is neither lovely nor funny. Xmas Smile

MorningsEleven · 12/12/2018 17:22

I love seeing Jack Black being romantic

Wow! I know some people with kinks that are way out there but that is beyond anything I've ever heard of. But I respect your right to enjoy the full array of talents that Kack Black posesses.

IfNotNowBernard · 12/12/2018 17:40

I'm sorry you had to see that Morris. Dp watched it while I shouted things like "she's been there 3 days! Why does she suddenly have new best friends?!" And Jude Law. Why???Why would she even let a strange man into the house she is staying in? Who would ever do that!? If he knocked on my door I'd tell him to sling his hook so I didn't have to listen to his insipid voice and look at his ageing boy face.
Cameron Diaz has some fabulous coats though. Am I wrong in thinking that both actresses wore only white until the penny dropped for both of them, and then they were in black?

Wishimaywishimight · 12/12/2018 17:52

I loved your review OP. I had an utterly shit day, am on a bus which is crawling home, DH will be late so I have to make dinner but your post made me laugh out loud - thank you!

TheVanguardSix · 12/12/2018 17:57

Thank you! I’ve found my people.
I suffered through Love Actually (why didn’t About A Boy become THE High Grant Christmas film? It’s a really good film, made around the same time). I skipped The Holiday. I’d rather swallow nails.

If you would enjoy hearing some nice people talk about The Holiday for AGES I recommend this podcast

MorrisZapp · 12/12/2018 18:20

Imagine you're in an Air BnB, having some personal time ten thousand miles from anyone you know.

A strange man knocks on the door, saying he's pissed and can he come in.

Do you a) hastily close the door, applying the deadlock

b) have unprotected sex with him, in his sisters bed, eight minutes later?

It's a puzzler!

It's usually on ITV2 about a million times over the festive period so plenty of opportunities to enjoy again and again Grin

fourbaubles · 12/12/2018 18:39

I have never understood why Moonstruck hasn't become a Christmas standard. Nick Cage when he was young and handsome and Cher looking fab with a great supporting cast too. Knocks The Holiday into a cocked (and sicked in) hat.

Alconleigh · 12/12/2018 18:41

It's honest to god one of the worst things I've ever seen. Law is egregious in most things. The only film he's any good in is The Talented Mr Ripley, as he's playing a vapid, handsome playboy. So not acting then......

Shirleyphallus · 12/12/2018 18:43

Awww I love this film

I’d 100% do Jude law in it. Very sexy top lip.

Riverside410 · 12/12/2018 19:09

Hee hee myheartbreaks watching Kate winslet and jack black hum away to that song in that movie has to be the most fake yukky thing ever and I can’t even say why!!

Riverside410 · 12/12/2018 19:22

Saw this link here about love actually it’s hilarious!!

EscapeTheCastle · 12/12/2018 19:33

It's me who said I like Jack Black being romantic.... I think it's because I have a slightly better chance with him than with Sir Judith of Law. I'm aware I have made everyone feel poorly with my declaration but the heart wants what the heart wants.

One day I might get a meet cute ...

For those of you who dislike him Law does a good creepy realistic turn in The Road to Perdition.

Goposie · 12/12/2018 19:40

It’s awful but not in a good way... it is just boring

WilburforceRaven · 12/12/2018 19:46

I even tried to watch Love, Actually whilst stoned, seeing if that made it tolerable. It didn't.

Quantumblue · 12/12/2018 19:50

I agree the Holiday is grippingly bad. DD and I watch it together occasionally. The bit I can't bear is how when Cameron decides to leave the cottage and go home, she gives no thought to the dog! Who is going to look after it if she leaves 10 days early? It ias as if it is part of the furniture.

SgtFredColon · 12/12/2018 22:16

Also she doesn’t call KW to tell her she is coming back. Is she just going to show up back at her house and tell KW (who is having a great time) to sling her hook?

Merrychristmasyoufilthyanimals · 12/12/2018 22:33

Jude law "Gram, as Diaz pronounces it" must have really understanding parents and babysitters too.

MorrisZapp · 12/12/2018 22:47

But not his sister, who despite being single and living locally, fucks off for Christmas and leaves her motherless neices to whoever drifts into Judith's flytrap.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 12/12/2018 22:49

She was only 17 in the movie! Only 3 years older than drum boy!!!

^^Noooo 😲

shirleyschmidt · 12/12/2018 22:52

Ooh yeah it's definitely not good but it's Shawshank compared to Love Actually!

Merrychristmasyoufilthyanimals · 12/12/2018 22:56

Love actually is on now.

Emma thompson crying scene is on. Gets me everytime.
