I've just watched The Holiday and now my toes need to be surgically unclenched

Worst film ever? Long, boring, weird, choppy editing, atrocious script, blatant Bridget Jones wannabe, and Jude fucking Law.

I've just realised I hadn't heard his voice before. Its the most unsexy voice this side of Jacob Rees Mogg.

Bizarre exercise montage in a pool.

World famous script writer with no friends until KW lovelies him.

When Diaz danced to the Killers I wanted to punch myself. I muted it and held on.

My sister in law watches this shite every year! I'm speechless. I don't want to see Jack Black kissing anybody, ever again. In fact I don't want to kiss anybody, ever again.

NO KISSING.

But Morris - it's not about the detail. It's about the Christmassy cottage in the snow and the festive pub, and everybody falling in love and the sentimentality. Only at Christmas though Smile

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 12/12/2018 12:45

Absinthe???? Maybe that's why I watch it. 😂😂😂

Badtasteflump · 12/12/2018 12:47

OMG this must have been meant to be - if I win a bit of cash anytime soon that is - the gorgeous cottage in the film has come up for sale on Rightmove Shock

link

I really, really want it.

Crimbobimbo · 12/12/2018 12:48

Jude Law makes me want to vomit into my hat and then wear it so it drips into my eyes and I don't have to look at his face.

I need to get this into a conversation.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 12/12/2018 12:48

It wasn't the actual cottage though, they built a fake one for the movie?

Badtasteflump · 12/12/2018 12:50

Um - ok, it's not exactly the cottage as it was a purpose-built set, but it's what it was based on.... and I still love it.

I got slightly overinvested when I wanted Cameron Diaz media room. Blush

RomanyRoots · 12/12/2018 12:53

I watched by mistake, I enjoyed it.

WilburforceRaven · 12/12/2018 12:55

Same here, but you said it so much better.

RomanyRoots · 12/12/2018 12:57

Love actually is on tonight, I think it's 9pm

Lottapianos · 12/12/2018 13:01

I've never seen it but I definitely have to watch it this year. Some people adore it. It sounds utterly shite, but so is Love Actually and I enjoy that enormously.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 12/12/2018 13:03

It is total horseshit, agreed. Another film where women are the given leads but they are a load of sexist bollocks.

Winslet - soppy & hopelessly in love with an unreachable twat. Exists purely to facilitate men’s lives (cunty Rufus, then the old fella, then Jack Black). JB treats her like dog shit, using her and chucking her as soon as he gets a sniff of his badgirl ex. Then the minute he gives her the nod at the awards thing, she is pathetically grateful for the crumb of affection. Fuck off Jack.

Diaz - Woman is successful in her career, ergo she MUST be a failure everywhere else. Comes to England (let’s ignore the speeding & drink driving stuff) and meets Jude Law. He’s a shagger. He’s a single parent. She forgives him instantly for withholding the truth about his kids and INSTANTLY steps into the role of ‘happy stepmum’ and accepts all of his emotional baggage. Like a good girl.

FUCK OFF.

rosieposey · 12/12/2018 13:04

Oh this is one of my favourite Christmas films.

I used to live in Guildford and this was filmed a fair bit in Godalming. I can remember seeing Jude Law and Cameron Diaz as I was in the high street there periodically and it was July. All of the shop owners changed their window displays to Christmas ones. I can remember thinking how hot Cameron Diaz must have been in that sheepskin coat Hmm

It's cheesetastic but it was never meant to be anything else. The cottage was a mock up just built for the film and taken down afterwards. I must admit the one in the link does look very like it.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 12/12/2018 13:04

It is unbelievable that it was made by a woman.

AbsintheFriends · 12/12/2018 13:07

I watched the first half hour, mesmerised by Cameron Diaz's appalling acting.

It was like watching someone act doing acting. Oddly fascinating, but truly awful.

lucydogz · 12/12/2018 13:08

Awful film. The outside might be a real cottage, but the interior is like no cottage i've ever been in. It was made when the makers thought that Jack black could be a romantic lead. He can't. He's really good in High Fidelity, Cable Guy and Enemy of the State.

Badtasteflump · 12/12/2018 13:09

Blimey, I honestly don't get all the anger. I know plenty of women - and men - who are successful in their careers but a bit crap in other areas. I also know plenty of people (of either sex) who put up with shit because they love somebody who doesn't deserve them. It's life.

And actually I don't see the awful flaws in JL's character. Yes he shags around but he's single so - so what? Yes he's a single parent but last time I checked that was allowed. No decent person would be put off by either of those things.

I know I'm taking this way too seriously btw. I just love that film Grin

ILoveDolly · 12/12/2018 13:13

I like the Holiday. I think the two female leads are actually quite believable. One gives herself endlessly to facilitate men's lives while barely thinking about her own needs. That's Kate. Hollywood experiences open her eyes to this but obviously she's not totally 'cured'. I think she doesn't see her relationship with JB as anything but friendship until he says he's dumped his actress, to be at the event.
The other character has been emotionally in stasis since her dad left her. She is looking for another father figure, luckily Jude is an emotionally giving dad not the critical make she was with before.
Women all still screwed up by men. Its like fluffy realism.

haverhill · 12/12/2018 13:13

It's one of those films I will watch for the sheer novelty value, and an (completely unwarranted) glow of superiority that, if I ever wrote a film script, it would at least be better than The Holiday.
It's awful.

Badtasteflump · 12/12/2018 13:18

Haverhill maybe you should give it a go then Smile

Roystonv · 12/12/2018 13:24

Tried to watch it once and never again.

BertieDrapper · 12/12/2018 13:29

I love the holiday! I too watch it every year.... but it was the first film Dh and I went to see on our first date.

Also, not to make you all jel or anything but My DH is spitting image of Jude law from that film ..... Wink thankfully DH has aged better the men JL!

Travis1 · 12/12/2018 13:34

Ach I love it! It's a good wee present wrapping background film.

HarryPottersSecretSister · 12/12/2018 13:40

Love it and Love Actually.

Cant wait to finish up from work and spend nights wrapping presents, drinking wine, eating chocolate whilst watching these Smile

pabloescobar · 12/12/2018 13:41

Totally disagree with this statement, he left the restaurant to go and finish it with the ex girlfriend so that he could start something with KW
