Is there anybody here who voted 'leave' who now regrets it?

Just wondering.

I'm generally not a very political person but seeing the total mess which seems to have been created by the government following through on the vote to leave the EU.

I think that the sane thing is to say 'OK we made a mistake, please can we stay in the EU.

I guess they won't because it's following through on the vote.

I know a lot of people are saying there should be a second vote, but I think these are people who voted to remain in the first place.

I was wondering if there would be any backing for a second referendum (or simply a let's forget brexit) from anyone who originally voted to leave. Maybe it's not delivering as you expected? Do you think that the pro-brexit politicians misrepresented things to you and you'd vote differently if you had a second chance?

(PS name change if you're embarrassed !)

I think the fact that it is so difficult, almost impossible, to leave without breaking the country is the most worrying thing about it. I don't regret voting leave at all, but I regret that the governments past signed us up to such an impossible-to-leave union. Why are remainers not more angry about this?

I also regret that the government that called the referendum neglected their duty to prepare for 'leave' to win. There should have been a new library built full of research on the impact of leaving and how to circumvent it before the campaign even started.

Cameron was negligent and let the whole country down. Leave was a perfectly valid vote. It is reasonable to want to leave. It is not reasonable to find out that we can't. It is not reasonable to find out that the government did not have even a fag packet plan. It is not reasonable to find out that we cannot leave a political union we didn't ask to be part of in the first place.

"The only people I know who voted leave are idiots. I think they are dead set on ‘England being English again!’ And house prices falling so they can buy a cheap mansion with no deposit on bad credit."

What ridiculous statements... I think you'll find the arguments are somewhat more complex than that Xmas Grin

No person or country or government should not do something just because it's all a bit too difficult. Of course it's complex beyond belief, disorganised, divisive, foreign territory etc etc, but these are not reasons to stop Brexit. I'm neither for nor against - not because of house prices (FFS - seriously?) or immigration but because foreign/EU policy has been prioritised over domestic policies, leading to domestic polarisation of economic wealth, abject poverty and unemployment in many areas of the UK, a crashing NHS etc etc.

I'm watching with interest... going against the majority perhaps, but I do feel that that whatever happens there will be lots of positives.. far more involvement in politics (hopefully intelligent), freedom for ALL EU countries to explore additional trade avenues, reduced complacency amongst the EU elite ...

I voted leave. No regrets. I followed my heart.

If there was another vote, no idea how I’d vote. I’d probably ask my kids how they wanted me to vote.

Very interesting thread. Am enjoying the honesty of the comments.

Can I just say a second referendum is entirely democratic.

When a bill passes through parliament it is voted on several times because it changes.
When trades union negotiate they have a vote to enable the negotiations and then a vote on the deal.

I'm not saying if there should be a referendum. I'm just pointing out if there is another referendum it would be legal, constitutional and democratic.

MissyCooper · 12/12/2018 19:23

Voted leave and certainly not on immigration.
My only regret? Thinking we lived in a democracy and my vote would count.

Meh, they all say that about immigration.

Genuine question. What is it that you want to happen? How can you say your vote didn’t count when TM has been genuinely trying for 2.5 years or whatever to make this happen? What is it that you want?

maxthemartian · 12/12/2018 19:26

I agree that a second vote at this stage would be the democratic thing to do, now that everyone has a far clearer idea of what Brexit actually means for the country.

Democracy is an ongoing process.

MissyCooper · 12/12/2018 19:27

Of course a second vote is democratic. And necessary. But we won’t get it. Over a barrel because some Neanderthals might riot.

I voted leave and don't regret it

themoomoo · 12/12/2018 19:36

Over a barrel because some Neanderthals might riot
sweet lord....

missesbiggens · 12/12/2018 19:37

That Twitter propaganda - oh my god. Does anyone fall for this shit anymore?

Bluntness100 · 12/12/2018 19:39

The day after thr referendum I had workmen here, I commented we were leaving and one of them said, "he voted to leave, go on ask him why" so I turned to this young lad and asked him why he voted to leave and his response?

"I just thought that's what everyone was doing".

What do you even say to that ? 😔

MrsFogi · 12/12/2018 19:40

My sister admitted the day after that she hadn't realised understood what a referendum was and that the outcome would be implemented without further consultation (these are all supposedly intelligent people).

DaphneFanshaw · 12/12/2018 19:41

Most of the people who I know that voted leave regret it, a couple of people some how think that leaving the EU will some how save us all from muslamic ray guns and others stand by their vote, would vote leave again in a heart beat and resent the prospect of a second referendum.

themoomoo · 12/12/2018 19:42

What do you even say to that
the same as I say to the nobs who declare they are labour voters because they always have been. ie. nothing.
At least he voted which is more than a lot of young remain voters apparently did

TarragonSauce · 12/12/2018 19:42

My sister was walking her dog in the park the day after the referendum when another dog walker said she expected that the army would be sent in now.
Send where? Asked my sister.
'Well, down to Dover, to close the border'.

Needless to say, sister walks her dog in a different park now!

MissyCooper · 12/12/2018 19:43

Yeah I am fairly contemptuous of leave voters as a whole but the people who didn’t get off there arses to go and vote can just pipe the fuck down.

missesbiggens · 12/12/2018 19:45

People voted on both sides for clever and stupid reasons. It's not a default Remainer=clever and leaver=stupid.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/12/2018 19:45

I do. 🙋‍♀️

SlowNorris · 12/12/2018 19:46

How can they regret something they have no understanding of?

EatSleepRantRepeat · 12/12/2018 19:49

I've gotten some of what I wanted from Leave already - Cameron and Osborne have gone (but unfortunately the tory scumbag cabinet have continued their policies to torture the poor and disabled). Companies are now having to try harder to recruit British citizens into entry-level jobs before the end of transition, eg. Pret. I was an agency recruiter and at the time, companies were paying the absolute minimum they could get away with, essentially exploiting foreign workers living in high multiple occupancy housing.

However I recognise that if this government and previous governments had done their job properly and enforced the options open to us as part of the EU, in terms of migration and other 'sovereignty' type issues, it wouldn't have come to this point. I'd vote remain now because the original result gave the chattering classes a bloody big shake-up, and are realising they need to listen to working class voters outside of London.

missesbiggens · 12/12/2018 19:49

SlowNorris - leaving the EU is not a complex idea really. It's difficult to do, but most people understand what it means. It's a bit insulting to say people didn't know what they were voting for, and you really have no proof that that is the case.

Porla · 12/12/2018 19:50

Yes. Bitterly regret it

missesbiggens · 12/12/2018 19:50

Well, apart from that twitter video which of course is totally authentic.

Mrswalliams1 · 12/12/2018 19:53

No regrets here. I’m an intelligent person who did my research before voting.
