What was the last European city you visited?

And what did you think of it?

Currently in Paris and due to the current unrest and terrible weather it's not been enjoyable and it does seem to be overrated from this experience, but I'll come back at a better time.

Where have you last been in Europe? I'm thinking about where I should next go. Berlin and Warsaw are on the cards. What do you think of those?

We hardly ever go to Europe. We went to Amsterdam in 2016, enjoyed it very much. Before that I think it was Venice in 2009, also loved it.

I think next time might be Vienna.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 11/12/2018 15:43

Seville in September only for a day, too brief, so going again for a week in March with a couple of days in Cordoba as well. Before that Copenhagen, nice but expensive.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 11/12/2018 15:46

Timișoara Romania
Plenty to see and do for a day or so in the town if you include things like the flower markets but along way if you want to visit any of the castles or see the dam. Outside the town you are pretty much I’m rural Romania which is beautiful and green.

Dublin - loved it, what a fantastic city. So much history, fabulous architecture and great food and drink! We ate in some lovely restaurants and found some pretty special bars. And the sun was shining the entire 3 days we were there.

taeglas · 11/12/2018 16:34

The atmosphere in Galway city in August during race week was lovely. I wasn't there for the races.

Manchester and York are both lovely.

I never tire of London. There is always something to do.
The architecture in Barcelona was amazing.

Paris I really loved and found people much friendlier and helpful than I expected.

I'm off to Rome for Christmas and I'm really pleased to read all the positive comments.

Just back from trip to Venice, beautiful and sunny with far less crowds than summer.

Also really recommend Bologna, fantastic food and nice compact size.

Another vote for Bologna!

I am off to Copenhagen tomorrow so very happy to see the number of positive votes here.

Dublin, for a concert. Was very impresses with the tram system from Railway Station to Hotel. Shocked at the amount of people out of their heads on drugs

DarlingNikita · 11/12/2018 17:25

Would love to go to most of these (esp Riga and Reyjyavik) but of those I've been to recently:

Lisbon. Insanely beautiful with all the tiled buildings and pavements; great weather in winter; good coffee and hot chocolate; wonderful views from the tops of the (many!) hills; little art galleries with affordable stuff by exciting young/emerging artists; loads of kiosks dotted about the city, often at the top of said hills so you can buy a drink and a snack and sit and enjoy a lovely view for a bit; friendly, helpful people.

Madrid. Busy, exciting, varied, tons of fabulously styled tiny bars and cafes. Wonderful food. Affordable. Friendly people. Great antique/flea markets for a wander and a friendly haggle. The Prado of course, and the Reine Sofia. Both breathtaking. Not to mention all the galleries/museums I didn't make it to!

God I want to go on about fifty city breaks now Grin

twosoups1972 · 11/12/2018 17:37

Barcelona Smile

Went in October half term. Totally loved it. Loved the Gaudi architecture and the beautiful road with the designer shops. We did a segway tour up the mountain for beautiful views of the city. We saw the beach and sea front from the bus tour we did and vowed to come back in the summer. It really has something for everyone.

I've been to many other European cities before - Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest....but I love Barcelona the best so far!

twosoups1972 · 11/12/2018 17:38

Oh and I forget to mention the tapas in Barcelona - me and the dds loved potatas bravas, we had to have them once a day (sometimes twice Grin)

Notquiteagandt · 12/12/2018 07:22

I have done quite a few city breaks this year prepregnancy.

Milan
Berlin
Vienna
Prague
Budapest
Rome
Florence

Vienna being my least favourite out the list. Prague probally my favourite.

awkwardturtle · 12/12/2018 07:26

Had a lovely few days in Tallinn. The people were charming. Lots to see and the food was excellent. Must sees include the Museum of Occupation and the Seaplane Museum.

Also really enjoyed Lisbon.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 12/12/2018 07:51

I was in Budapest this time last year....not impressed at all....I also felt very unsafe in Dublin and would not go back....Edinburgh i loved...a beautiful city steeped in history....

DarlingNikita · 13/12/2018 16:35

Those who've been to St Petersburg, is it easy enough to 'get' the city as a foreigner? I'd love to go but have always worried that Russia is impenetrable unless you're with someone who lives there or knows it well.

Taffeta · 13/12/2018 16:47

We hired a private guide in St Petersburg

Worth every penny as we only had a short time there

Devised our own itinerary - Faberge museum, Peterhof etc.

I’ve a friend who did it under her own steam and had a great time. Visas can be a pain tho

DarlingNikita · 13/12/2018 16:49

Thank you, yes, I was thinking a guide might be the way to go.

nordstrom · 13/12/2018 17:49

We didn't have a guide for St Petersburg, and the visa process was surprisingly okay! Staying in decent hotels was key for us, as we felt 'looked after' in that respect with things like ordering taxis etc.

Same goes for Moscow.

OneStepMoreFun · 13/12/2018 19:42

@myusernamewastakenbyme - I'm genuinely baffled how anyone could not be impressed by Budapest. It's so varied.

If you like lazing around, you can go on boat trips and to endless spas. If you like culture there are loads of art galleries and museums, a stunning opera house and equally stunning concert hall. If you like walking there are hills and woods and river banks, squares and a gorgeous island. If you like shopping there's markets and street after street of shops. If you like food there are elegant cake shops and tea rooms, gorgeous cheap restaurants. If you like music there are jazz cafes, indie bands playing in the ruin bars, street shows and classical concerts in churches and music halls. If you like drinking, the ruin bars are wild and the 19th century cafes are elegant.

What put you off?

DotForShort · 13/12/2018 21:52

DarlingNikita, St. Petersburg is a very manageable city. The historical centre is quite compact and easily navigable. I speak Russian, which certainly makes everything easier, but you will find that many people can communicate in English, especially those employed in tourist-related businesses. It’s a lovely city, so much to see and do, amazing in all ways. I hope you have the opportunity to visit!
