What was the last European city you visited?

And what did you think of it?

Currently in Paris and due to the current unrest and terrible weather it's not been enjoyable and it does seem to be overrated from this experience, but I'll come back at a better time.

Where have you last been in Europe? I'm thinking about where I should next go. Berlin and Warsaw are on the cards. What do you think of those?

Florence and Lucca
I was a bit lukewarm about Florence, but it was our own fault - we were there at the height of summer, and with the DC, so couldn't reasonably drag them around as much of the cultural stuff as we'd have liked.

Lucca on the other hand was fabulous - pretty, compact, and with lots of great, good value restaurants.

Vienna. Magical at this time of year.

SockQueen · 09/12/2018 08:02

I'm in Berlin right now. Smile I love it here, it's a bit less polished than London or Paris but has fantastic history and culture, plus great bars (though pg this time so can't participate) and shopping.

Chichester which is still European. We like it.
Abroad was Troyes in France. Very beautiful medieval city. Not touristy at all.

anniehm · 09/12/2018 08:15

Loved Budapest in winter, not too crowded and the outdoor spa in the snow was magical. Avoid anywhere near a port in summer (cruise ships) anywhere on the Chinese/Japanese/American tour schedules in summer eg Paris, Berlin and avoid Barcelona full stop, it's crazy! My top tips are less well travelled, loved Bordeaux, Avignon was amazing, loved Sicily - Taormina is probably my favourite place ever. If you aren't a sun worshipper and can put up with rain the autumn, after Christmas and early spring work best.

anniehm · 09/12/2018 08:18

Ps avoid Bruges- it's far too overrun with British coach trips (might be ok in January/February but last week a nightmare!!!!)

Escolar · 09/12/2018 08:19

Paris. Love Paris.

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/12/2018 08:19

Rome is my favourite city. Beautiful, history everywhere, and you can live on ice cream and pizza Grin

Paris is also a favourite, but I can see why it wouldn't be very nice to be there now. I imagine the people who live and work there are more stressed than usual, apart from anything else.

Milan. It rained the whole time, which was a shame, but it's a lovely city. Fantastic museums, restaurants, decent metro- and the Aperitivo is excellent!

elQuintoConyo · 09/12/2018 08:29

Last place was Barcelona a couple of weeks ago. Great fun. I know it like the back of my hand so can avoid the jam-packed parts.

I'd also recommend Valencia, lovely lovely city. Rent bikes and go round the river bed and through the old town.

tinytemper66 · 09/12/2018 08:34

Madrid, Berlin, Rome, Cologne, Brussels, Bruges, Ghent, Bordeaux, Rouen, Reims.

E20mom · 09/12/2018 08:35

I think Paris is always crap. I much prefer Rome.

LaDaronne · 09/12/2018 08:59

Manchester.

nordstrom · 09/12/2018 09:48

St Petersburg.

Heratnumber7 · 09/12/2018 09:52

Toulouse and Bruges are both lovely.
Prague is nice too but very touristy. Also love Nice.

dementedma · 09/12/2018 09:56

love Krakow, Wroclaw and Gdansk - big fans of Poland.
Last city visited was Edinburgh (but it's on my doorstep) and tomorrow off to London.

donajimena · 09/12/2018 09:57

Seville. Don't go in July or August unless you want to do a mad sweaty dash from air con to air con. Its beautiful though.

Sandsnake · 09/12/2018 10:11

Salzburg. Loved it! Not too big, beautiful scenery and wonderful sights (and beer halls).

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2018 10:12

Leeds

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2018 10:12

Or if you mean non UK Nuremberg, which to be honest I preferred to Leeds

Godotsarrived · 09/12/2018 10:16

Marseille, wonderful city. The old port area is fantastic. Bruges is also lovely. Highly recommmend Split as well.

Cooroo · 09/12/2018 10:40

Seville! We went early October and the weather was lovely. You can spend hours wandering around getting lost and discovering lovely things, the open up Google maps when you want to go back to accommodation. Cycle tours are great.

fussychica · 09/12/2018 10:44

Rome. Sorry thought it was very overrated. To be fair the weather was crap but it was rammed despite being the first week in November. The piled up rubbish and the way places, especially parks are decaying and overgrown is sad. The local are up in arms about the way their city is declining and I don't blame them. Should have gone 20 years ago.

Previous to that, Zaragoza, loved it. Totally authentic and a hidden gem for an overnight stay. I do love most Spanish cities though.

AnnaMagnani · 09/12/2018 10:48

Thessaloniki in October. Amazing food, lots to see and then spend a few days exploring sites of northern Greece - Meteora, Pella, Vergina.

Can't recommend it highly enough - very cheap (3 courses + wine for 2 at top rated restaurant was 30 euros), outstanding museums, lots to do.

Especially when exploring outside there was barely anyone there. Roads were v easy to drive on, we would turn up at some world class museum and find there was just us and a German tour party. Only place that was really busy was Meteora which I imagine would be packed in the summer.

The EU has spent ££££ on developing the area to try to get people to not just visit Athens - we had no idea about this before we went, only went because DH was going to a conference.

SaggingEverything · 09/12/2018 10:49

Geneva, just after Christmas last year. Loved it. Got a bargain deal but extortionately expensive once you get there. Helped though by the free public transport pass that hotels give you.
