What was the last European city you visited?

And what did you think of it?

Currently in Paris and due to the current unrest and terrible weather it's not been enjoyable and it does seem to be overrated from this experience, but I'll come back at a better time.

Where have you last been in Europe? I'm thinking about where I should next go. Berlin and Warsaw are on the cards. What do you think of those?

Corfu is beautiful, & so compact compared with most cities Smile

It is a bit scruffy & untidy in places but still a joy

ForalltheSaints · 10/12/2018 19:13

Brighton, which is a city and is still in Europe. I enjoyed visiting the Royal Pavilion for the first time in several years.

Springmachine · 10/12/2018 19:26

@DogInATent thank you!
I'm looking right now.
How long would you recommend going for?
We are thinking late February

DogInATent · 10/12/2018 19:44

@Springmachine
I'm not sure what it will be like at that time of the year. But a couple of days will let you see the city (it's quite compact, entirely walkable from a city centre hotel), one day for a trip to Bled, plus however any days you fancy for other trips out. Main roads are very good, so hiring a car to see some scenery for a day or two should be practical. The scenery is one of the major features of Slovenia.

Did you see the 48hrs In Ljubljana episode?

BikeRunSki · 10/12/2018 19:48

Leeds, last Friday
I work there. I believe it’s still European.
I didn’t used to think much of Leeds, but it has been developed beyond recognition n the last 25 years or so.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 10/12/2018 19:53

Vienna in the Spring - beautiful, lovely friendly people. Oslo in the Summer, again lovely but so expensive.

NotTheQueen · 10/12/2018 19:54

London: lived there for seven years, still find interesting things to see and do every visit.
Liverpool: quite like Liverpool, prefer it over Manchester.
Krakow; been nearly 20 times, and still enjoy going again with friends and family who haven’t been (tip - if you’re going to auschwitz, go in the morning as often by the time the evening trip reaches Birkenau, it’s too dark to see anything)
Wroclaw; not a lot to see as a tourist but perfect for a weekend. It’s really easy to get around and like most Polish cities, safe to travel on public transport alone at night (full disclosure, we’ve buying an apartment there as we enjoy it so much) If you’re interested in ‘medical tourism’, the clinics etc are very well equipped and price competitive
Vienna; loved the Empress Stasi museum but otherwise found it expensive and overrated.
Budapest; been half a dozen times and enjoy it every time.
Paris; my absolute favourite place to visit, would go every weekend if I could
Dublin; seriously it’s a shithole. The hotels are mind boggling expensive, there’s not a lot to see, and you’ll come away with a cold as it rains constantly. The main streets (OConnell, Grafton etc) are not safe
Amsterdam; quite happy never to visit again, will probably go again as constant flow of family from down under. Not keen on spending hours in art galleries or museums generally (apart from London’s V&A), so not a huge amount to do.
Venice: just remember the crowds and the smell.
Prague: found Prague very picture perfect, perfect for a weekend.
Cologne: once you’ve seen the cathedral and the Lindt factory, there’s not much more to see. I visit each year to see family so end up shopping or being part of carnival.
Berlin: liked Berlin, would love to go again but DH isn’t keen as he thinks it’s too dangerous

Next trip, Stuttgart for Christmas markets next week

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 10/12/2018 19:55

Basel - beautiful and small enough to enjoy and you can stay on the border in a BB hotel (Weil am Rhein) and get the tram 3 stops to the city.

Christmas is magical. Also close is Mulhouse or Colmar also nice to visit.

Porto. Also small enough for a relaxed weekend

Riga. Was very surprised at it's Beauty and charm. Interesting museum of the takeover of Latvia by both Russia and Germany and the loss of their culture.

Göteborg. Very beautiful city. Great shopping too.

GiantKitten · 10/12/2018 20:10

Forgot about Rome & we were only there 2 months ago Blush

We loved it - had 3 full days plus a morning - wasn’t nearly enough! There’s just so much to see, & as someone else said the locals are really friendly.

It’s hot though. Even in early Oct it was a bit much for me (although I am admittedly very weedy in any level of heat).

ln1981 · 10/12/2018 20:13

Dublin- did a day trip on the ferry from Holyhead with the dc’s in October. Always find it a bloody expensive trip but I do enjoy going over.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/12/2018 20:21

Well, apart from the local ones, Athens in October. Fantastic- we stayed in a lovely hotel with a roof restaurant- a view of sunrise over the Parthenon at breakfast is a good start to the day. Perfect sight-seeing temperatures ~20 C, not too busy. A couple of day trips out to Mycenae and Delphi, wow. And the museums, especially the National Achaeological museum ... astonishing.

goose1964 · 10/12/2018 20:23

Prague, love it, been there loads of times and still find loads to do

Oblomov18 · 10/12/2018 20:23

Berlin.
Was my favourite by far.

Did like: Prague, Budapest, Bruges.

IdblowJonSnow · 10/12/2018 21:25

Came on to say Budapest. It is beautiful. And less busy/touristy/expensive by far than other European cities. Keen to try poland soon.

BlueLegume · 10/12/2018 21:32

Geneva - lovely calm place. Highly recommend
Rome - always fabulous
Lisbon and Porto both great
Nice - brilliant
Madrid - most Spanish cities deliver on culture and food etc
Paris is wonderful- sad that it’s not great times for yo
Bologna is a great city too

C0untDucku1a · 10/12/2018 21:33

Eindhoven. Beautiful. Loved it there.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 10/12/2018 21:45

Please tell me more about Ljubljana

Lake Bled is a bit too touristy IMO, my friend went to Slovenia on my recommendation and ended up in Kranska Gora (not sure if right spelling) and loved it.

As for Ljubljana, it really is such a lovely compact town. There are day trips to the caves and Lake Bled which you can probably book from any hotel.

There was also a lovely restaurant called Julia in the town where we ended up first and last night. Oh and take the Ljubljana Free tour if it's still going. The history of the communist regime coupled with the civil wars afterwards is so interesting.

The flights are a bit troublesome, only on certain days of the week and quite expensive compared to nearby cities. One great trip would be to fly to Munich or Salzberg then take an overnight train but that's quite a big project!
Good luck!

tierraJ · 10/12/2018 21:54

It was Mykonos Town, the 'capital' of Mykonos basically.

Quite small & pretty & very warm.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 10/12/2018 22:12

York
And Copenhagen, which I adored

RachelRosie · 10/12/2018 22:20

Salzburg. Loved it. First trip with our toddler, so much for her to do.

Got out to the mountains, took a trip to St Gilgen then went up the cable cart. Was stunning.

Found the whole place clean, safe and friendly.

Also love Budapest (went for our honeymoon), Amsterdam and Dubrovnik.

Not fussed by Prauge. Found it over rated.

In the UK, I love Manchester and Norwich.

mydogisthebest · 10/12/2018 22:49

This summer we went to Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp, Delft and Leiden. First time to Brussels and we loved it.

We both really like Holland, particularly Leiden.

GiantKitten · 10/12/2018 23:46

We like Holland too, mydog Smile

Haven't yet been to Delft or Leiden but do like Amsterdam, Rotterdam & Utrecht (which is kind of a mini-Amsterdam).

I'm quite keen to stay on one of those center parcs type sites in the middle of the country & visit lots of places but we're putting off EU trips altogether until Brexit is sorted out one way or the other Hmm

blue25 · 10/12/2018 23:50

Malaga-surprisingly nice.

alseb · 11/12/2018 00:09

Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw all fabulous places to visit. Great food, history, museums, friendly people, inexpensive, clean and efficient public transport system Can't recommend enough.Brilliant accommodation. Also, fabulous weather (Warsaw) in summer when we were there.
Last trip was Seville and Valencia. Both beautiful cities. Fantastic architecture, wonderful food, however obviously more expensive than Poland.

ginghambox · 11/12/2018 00:50

Hamburg the riverfront is superb, just stay away fron St Pauli Grin
