What was the last European city you visited?

And what did you think of it?

Currently in Paris and due to the current unrest and terrible weather it's not been enjoyable and it does seem to be overrated from this experience, but I'll come back at a better time.

Where have you last been in Europe? I'm thinking about where I should next go. Berlin and Warsaw are on the cards. What do you think of those?

The Hague, love it there. We go at least once a year.

isseywithcats · 09/12/2018 21:43

Rome is fabulous loads to do and see
Paris i loved it
Krakov a very pretty city and once again lots to do and see
Istanbul the area near the blue mosque is very interesting
Bonn lots of museums and places of interest

GandolfBold · 09/12/2018 21:47

Rome. Loved it and so cheap to eat. Busy though!

TowerRingInferno · 09/12/2018 22:30

Dublin. Cold and wet and litter everywhere. Underwhelmed.

Toulouse. Ridiculously hot when we visited, which is my main memory. Nice enough for a day visit. Loved the countryside around. Dh and ds enjoyed visiting the airbus factory but I passed on that. Think we stayed about an hours drive away.

Ladymargarethall · 09/12/2018 22:33

Love Berlin. Last European city we visited was Munich.

Davros · 10/12/2018 00:02

Madrid
Salzburg
Bolzano
All fantastic

Minniemountain · 10/12/2018 06:15

Rome is amazing. We were there last week. Autumn is definitely better there as less busy and hot.

Malaga is great.

Also a big fan of Munich.

knittedjest · 10/12/2018 06:23

Saint Petersburg a couple of weekends ago. I have an apartment there and am there pretty often as my youngest splits her sports training between here and there. It's a really gorgeous city with a surprisingly chilled out western atmosphere but also very timeless and historic. Much better than Moscow imo.

A city that I did visit for the first time a few months ago that I really enjoyed was Ostrava, Czech Republic. Gorgeous, underrated little city. Linz, Austria is another recent notable mention that was off the beaten track. Stunning and unique architecture and history.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 10/12/2018 06:57

We were in Rome in October. Really enjoyed it but didn’t love it and I really was expecting to. The places to see are amazing, food was gorgeous and we were tripping over affordable restaurants but I can’t quite put my finger on why I didn’t love it.
I did love Paris when we were there a couple of years ago though.

cptartapp · 10/12/2018 07:10

Almeria. Flew via there for some Spanish sun in October. Nice enough.
Off to Copenhagen for New Year. LOved Reykjavik in Jan.

Meesh77 · 10/12/2018 07:21

Venice, which I loved, we’ve also been to Amsterdam this year - Didn’t rate it. Berlin was interesting. Paris is beautiful but it’s ruined these days. Barcelona and Prague are great. Love Nice and Lyon.

A580Hojas · 10/12/2018 07:23

Zadar, Croatia. Lovely city although we were there on a blistering hot day in July so couldn't make the most of it as we kept needing to stop for drinks/shade. I imagine it would be wonderful in May or September.

drinkswineoutofamug · 10/12/2018 07:24

Stockport last week.
But in Europe , Burgas. Lots of shops but slowly becoming more westernised with huge shopping malls full of fast food restaurants and m&s! Prefer to walk down the back streets and our local market. A lot has changed in Bulgaria in the past 10 years. More cars for a start and traffic lights!

Hen2018 · 10/12/2018 07:54

Freiburg. Love Germany.

MumInTheCity · 10/12/2018 08:05

I went to Bruges last week, it was beautiful and had a lovely Christmas market. Prague is my absolute favourite European city though (after London.) So much to see and do, a really beautiful place with a fantastic atmosphere.

fleuriepeninsula · 10/12/2018 09:10

Mainz and Wiesbaden for Christmas markets - absolutely lovely smaller towns and a very short train ride from Frankfurt airport.

OutPinked · 10/12/2018 09:15

Paris was the last but I didn’t particularly enjoy it despite being a few times before and always loving it. I think it was just to do with me now being older, I found the locals extremely rude and I hated their crazy roads.

Before that we visited Prague which is absolutely lovely and extremely cheap. We always walk a lot on holidays so we didn’t need to use public transport there, it’s such a small place we could walk everywhere. The food and drink is dirt cheap too.

caperplips · 10/12/2018 10:15

In the past 12 months I have been to Prague, Liverpool, London (am not UK based), Madrid and Lisbon.

I enjoyed all of them in their own ways. I have never been to a city and been underwhelmed and it makes me a bit sad when people say that. All travel is great imo and there is always something to see / explore / learn / experience.

I have been to most of the cities listed on here (apart from Oslo and Copenhagen & St Petersburg - all are on my list!)

Many I have been to more than once and some I visit annually. I adore being immersed in a different culture!

Next on our list is a return visit to Budapest in spring and annual trip to Venice in May

Satsumaeater · 10/12/2018 10:21

Copenhagen was the last continental European city I went to and it was great. We also went over the bridge to Lund, I'd recommend that too.

Otherwise as others have said Budapest is underrated. I also liked Helsinki and Tallinn which are easy to combine on one trip.

I'm desperate to see Ljubljana but the flights are not convenient at all

Me too and agree about flights.

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 10/12/2018 11:30

Rome - loved it. The locals were friendlier than I expected (I thought it would just be pushy attempts to sell us stuff - not a reflection on Italians at all just on how tourist cities in general can be!) Wondering the streets and just finding ancient Roman walls, buildings, statues etc. popping up everywhere was wonderful.

I emigrated to Copenhagen years ago and have never regretted it - I love this city.

recently · 10/12/2018 11:33

Not counting the one I live in, Venice which was lovely.

Monday55 · 10/12/2018 11:42

Geneva, Switzerland
*Very peaceful

  • Free transportation to and from the airport and around the city ( you ask for the travel card at the hotel you're staying and a free ticket to the city can be claimed from the baggage collection area)
  • Awesome chocolate (better than their famous toblerone)
  • Improve your French
  • Nice long walk or cycle by the lake.
Stompythedinosaur · 10/12/2018 12:10

Mine was Gothenburg, which was absolutely lovely! Pretty old town, had some lovely food, public transport was very easy and a beautiful walk on one of the islands.

beanaseireann · 10/12/2018 12:23

Dubrovnik
Well worth a visit.
London- I love it.
Amsterdam - a great city
All in the past year.

blueangel1 · 10/12/2018 12:38

Antwerp, on the way back from a 9 day European road trip through Belgium, the Netherlands and North Germany. Well worth a visit.
