What was the last European city you visited?

And what did you think of it?

Currently in Paris and due to the current unrest and terrible weather it's not been enjoyable and it does seem to be overrated from this experience, but I'll come back at a better time.

Where have you last been in Europe? I'm thinking about where I should next go. Berlin and Warsaw are on the cards. What do you think of those?

I went to Thessaloniki this year. I loved it. I found it friendlier and more optimistic and safer than Athens and the shopping was brilliant as is the food. I will go back for sure.

I second Brussels, Malaga and Venice but I didn't meet a part of Italy I didn't like!

I also love Istanbul. Again the area around the Blue mosque (Sultanamet?) Anyway I misjudged the weather when we went and it was freezing and I didn't expect it to be!

Copenhagen and Dubrovnik are definitely on my wishlist.

Notatallobvious · 11/12/2018 06:22

Porto. Beautiful and compact, easy access from the airport, would go back again tomorrow.

SagelyNodding · 11/12/2018 06:30

I spend a lot of time in Nice and in Toulon. Both have their charms, but Toulon is a bit 'grittier' As a tourist, my most recent trip was to Barcelona last winter and I really enjoyed it. Beautiful weather, nice people, loads to see and do, easy public transport but we walked mostly. It was heaving with tourists though.

rosy71 · 11/12/2018 06:32

London in October. Paris in August.

TheNumberfaker · 11/12/2018 07:02

Outskirts of Wolverhampton, I wouldn’t particularly recommend it. Before that it was London in October. There was a massive vibe of tolerance and diversity - it was amazing!

sallysummer · 11/12/2018 07:39

I was in High Wycombe for a tennis thing; it's a dump of the first order so I wouldn't recommend it.

thegreylady · 11/12/2018 08:22

We loved everything about Krakow.
Bruges was beautiful but expensive .
Our favourite is Istanbul for the wonderful people, the history, the shopping, the food and of course, at the moment it it is very cheap!

thegreylady · 11/12/2018 08:24

In the UK I love Durham, Chester and York. Manchester is my favourite big city here and little St David’s is beautiful.

mydogisthebest · 11/12/2018 08:28

GiantKitten, yes Utrecht is lovely too. We are not that keen on Amsterdam. Leiden is much nicer in our opinion.

We have stayed at Duinrell 3 times booked through Sun holidays so really cheap. It's a really nice site and handy to visit lots of places

scaryteacher · 11/12/2018 09:28

Raglansleeve I love Viennese coffee - the weiner melange is delicious, especially at Cafe Central and the patisserie there is to die for. I had cakegasms.

OneStepMoreFun · 11/12/2018 09:35

Budapest. It's stunning. A thousand times more beautiful, interesting, relaxing and friendly than Pairs. I fell completely in love with it and want to go back again and again. Best city I've ever visited, and I love cities. Better than New York, Boston, Istanbul, Venice or Rome all of which I love. Budapest is magical, like no other place on earth.

beltanelove · 11/12/2018 09:37

Lovely Lancaster in the uk. Before that Galway and San Sebastián. Both great in very different ways. Seafood amazing in both!

1hello2hello · 11/12/2018 09:48

Sorrento which was lovely but didn't go in the summer which I imagine is chaos.
Loved Venice & Stockholm. Underwhelmed by Amsterdam.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 11/12/2018 09:52

I'm desperate to see Ljubljana but the flights are not convenient at all

Ljubljana is delightful and if you have a spare day, get the bus to Lake Bled which is simply beautiful (about an hour away).

Bruges is a shithole of course it's not, it's my favourite place in the whole world but I don't want it overrun.

Last place I visited was Brussels which was surprisingly nice and we had a day in Ghent which is might even be lovelier than Bruges, but I'm reserving judgment until I've been back and checked it out properly.

My current recommendation would be Seville. We were there in December last year and spent one afternoon sitting outside a restaurant in shirtsleeves. And as someone upthread said, it smells heavenly. The flamenco is breathtaking, the architecture is stunning and the food is delicious. Don't eat the oranges straight off the tree though, they're sour sour sour (as my childish DH who couldn't resist will tell you).

I really like Paris and have been a few times. We're going between Christmas and New Year so hopefully things will have calmed down by then.

iLoveFoood · 11/12/2018 09:56

Stuttgart, germany

Lovely atmosphere, largest markets in Germany, 24 hour transport, such a cute place with lots of modern shops

DontCallMeCharlotte · 11/12/2018 10:12

Lovely Lancaster in the uk

Really? I drove through there once en route to Morecambe* and it looked like they'd forgotten to put the lights on.

Says she, who lives in a place so dull there is not a single B&B or hotel room to be had within a three mile radius.

*I wouldn't recommend Morecambe either.

Vagndidit · 11/12/2018 10:38

Valencia, fabulous place.

AlphaJuno · 11/12/2018 12:13

Verona in Italy. It was very nice. We visited the balcony they think inspired 'Romeo and Juliet'. That was about 11 years ago though.

paap1975 · 11/12/2018 12:40

Barcelona is my absolute favourite, but we went to Toulouse earlier this year and loved that too (not good right no though with the protests)

IslaMann · 11/12/2018 13:09

Manchester last weekend. Loved it. Great vibe and the Christmas Markets were fantastic. I live in Bristol, and always plenty to do. Ditto Bath.
Love Cardiff
Paris I can take or leave.
Amsterdam fabulous
Frankfurt v pretty
Barcelona lovely
Edinburgh and Glasgow great fun
London great
Rome very busy and bustling

Dowser · 11/12/2018 13:25

Salisbury. No it’s
York

Dowser · 11/12/2018 13:28

Cardiff in June
Leicester in September
Worcester in April

Butkin1 · 11/12/2018 13:45

My recommendation would be Istanbul. Wonderful architecture, brilliant food and the mix of Europe/Asia that you don't tend to get in many "European" cities. Very exotic and a good place to go slightly out of season.

GiantKitten · 11/12/2018 15:07

IslaMann my DD plus friends visited the Manc Christmas markets recently - had a great day out, but never thought to book a table for dinner & couldn’t get in anywhere!

(Word to the wise for anyone else considering going Grin)

gttia · 11/12/2018 15:09

Ghent in October, absolutely gorgeous! Plenty to do. Can't wait to go back
