How zombie-proof is your house?

It's something I wonder about quite a bit.

Say the zombie apocalypse is here. For whatever reason you can't leave your house with your bug out bag so you need to batten down the hatches and stay put. How suitable a stronghold would your house be?

I'm quietly confident about mine. It's a back to back terrace so no nasty surprises from the rear oo-er. The front yard is small but has a high wrought iron fence on top of a brick wall. Gate is high too and if i got a bike lock I think I'd be ok. If they did breach the yard windows are again quite high, some have bars on and our door is quite sturdy.

Final stand would be in the old coal cellar or the converted attic.

We have one spare room if anyone needs it btw.

If we had 5 minutes warning to shut the gates and the shutters then we should be fine. We are rural so I wouldn't expect more than one or two at a time. We have a bow and arrows in the house and dd is a decent shot so we should be able to see them off.

WellGoshDarnIt · 30/11/2018 17:34

I don't think we'd stand a chance, tbh. No gate at the front, (not allowed to put one up), back gardens all connected, with lots of gaps in the hedges. I fear we would face a situation not dissimilar to that in Shaun of the Dead - "There's a girl in the garden......."

ApocalypseNowt · 30/11/2018 17:35

.....in the garden, there is a girl! Grin

Not very zombie proof really. We have big gates at the main entrance but if they walked through the woods they could get to us. Post and wire fence isn't going to hold them back for long.

Not much we could do about that though since the property is large and we would have to win the lottery to fence it all in!

Hmm, seems like we might be zombie food.

ApocalypseNowt · 30/11/2018 17:41

user you need to be thinking traps. Or ask Frenchfancy for some archery lessons.

I'm impressed by the bow & arrows. I really need to start thinking about weapons....

We’re all good Grin

Firstly we live down a lane with only a handful of other houses and its a dead end so no other people. Mid-terrace, fully enclosed garden (walls!) so we’re protected from the rear. Only front window and door to worry about so we can barricade ourselves in. The house is 3 floors and laid out in such a way, as an extra precaution, we could barricade ourselves to the top 2 floors or the very top floor.

Zombie wise, we’re safe. Fire wise, not so much....

ApocalypseNowt · 30/11/2018 17:43

Mama v similar to us! We are also on a dead end (off a dead end....weird street layout).

I think zombies are a bit more realistic than fire tbh so I think we're golden!

How much protection do we need? Zombies always seem fairly ineffectual to me, just stand there swaying and moaning with bits dropping off ... after about 2 days there'd be nothing left of them surely.

FantasticBadger · 30/11/2018 17:46

And I have an excellent weed burner that I could poke out through the letterbox to deter zombie frontal attack.

ApocalypseNowt · 30/11/2018 17:47

Well I live in a city of about 1m people so there's quite a few to worry about. Also it's chilly at the moment so I think they'd "keep" for a bit longer than 2 days.

Defo think they'd be shamblers though rather than 28 days later style 'runners'.

We have a 3ft wall then privit hedges (6ft) out the front, but the gate is just normal height so I'd need to add a bit to the top. Our living room windows are 150cm X 150cm so they'd need a lot of wood putting over them. Back garden backs onto another garden with 5' fences so I think we'd be ok from zombies, but not other people scavenging.

TheQueenSnortsAvocados · 30/11/2018 17:52

Ours would be crap. Open front, close to a main road, short back wall, French doors. Dead meat in the Avocados house I'm afraid.

BerriTerri · 30/11/2018 17:53

No front garden wall, huge space round side of house. Poorly maintained back garden fence- basically screwed

boatyardblues · 30/11/2018 17:58

Urban late Victorian house with too much glass at the front and no fence or gate. If we can barricade ourselves into the back of the house we might hold out for a while if we wee in the kitchen sink and post our poo out through the cat flap. Otherwise, we’re toast. 😕

outreach29 · 30/11/2018 17:59

WE ARE DOOMED

LBOCS2 · 30/11/2018 18:00

Ours wouldn't be great - although we've got a very hefty front door we have windows accessible from the front porch. How good are these zombies at stairs? We have stairs up to the front.

My last ditch place to hide is our unconverted loft. We could pull up the ladder and stay there for some time and worst case scenario, break through the firebreak into our neighbour's house as she's quite frail so I think that even as a zombie I could take her.

Heuschrecke · 30/11/2018 18:05

I've had a Zombie Dustbinâ„¢ for years, thanks to Stratters (?). Doubt it will save me though!

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 30/11/2018 18:06

We would be ok in a mid terrace, we have decking at the front so if we could block up the access with a door we could pick them off from the deck safely.
BUT we are about 15 feet from the primary school entrance, it is fully fenced with 10 foot high fences, 2 reinforced gates. Secure buildings and areas, cooking facilities, enough arable land for a small family. A much better bet.

However 15 feet is a long way in the zombie apocalypse, when the time comes should we go for it or stay put in the house? 😆

Shockers · 30/11/2018 18:07

Are zombies scared of big dogs?

OhSoStressed · 30/11/2018 18:09

In all honesty, between my 16 and 3 year olds, being eaten by zombies doesn't sound that bad atm. Envy

Zofloramummy · 30/11/2018 18:09

Of all the possible monsters zombies scare me the most! They are relentless. I’m in a Victorian terrace with a large bay window. Out back is a five foot gate and walls.
My exit plan is the attic, it’s partly boarded, has lights and I can pull the ladder up behind us! (Yes I have given this some thought)

JoinTheDots · 30/11/2018 18:11

I'd have no chance! It's something I think about as I am drifting off to sleep sometimes. The back of the house is wall to wall window - floor to ceiling so I imagine if we had a breach at the back, they would be drawn to the sound or sight of us, and might be able to break in quite easily. So would any looters. The front is not too bad and we are in a rural location so hopefully we might be left alone anyway?!

sossages · 30/11/2018 18:13

1st floor flat. As long as no one buzzes them in the front door we'll be ok for a while, assuming they can't work out how to climb.

However, there's a medieval castle with all its outer walls intact about a 5 minute walk from here. If we had a bit of notice we could go down there instead. I'm sure the rest of the town will have the same idea which will give us plenty of manpower to reflood the moat and replace the missing bits of roof.

user187656748 · 30/11/2018 18:15

We could survive in the loft for a good while. The sleeping bags are stored up there with all the camping gear, there is light and power, the cold water tank, plus there is currently a fair amount of food up there too. We'd be pretty bored though. The only books up there are a box of toddler books and the DC are 11 and 14.
