Ten years since Woolworths closed Does anyone else still miss it?

It was a good place to do a Christmas shop if you wanted to get all or at least most of your Christmas shop all in one place in one hit DH liked it for this reason. I remember my mum buying us Ladybird books from here. They were on a stand near the entrance near the pick and mix.

Bought loads of tapes there as a teen. Last winter my mum gave me a scarf and gloves set still in its Woolworths carrier bag which shed never worn. Dusky pink and the scarf is really thick and kept my neck warm during Beast from the East.

I remember the last thing i bought from there before it closed was the Christmas Radio Times for Christmas 2008.

We've just had a Wilkos open near us. It reminds me a little of Woolies. No vast pick and mix counters sadly though.

Ten years? Shock.

INeedNewShoes · 30/11/2018 16:34

Yes. I miss it! I've still got the bowls/plates etc. I bought there to go to uni.

It would have been my first stop for Christmas lights etc. if it hadn't closed by the time I had my own house to decorate.

formerbabe · 30/11/2018 16:34

I think Wilko's and B&M have filled the gap Woolworths left.

Snowwontbelong · 30/11/2018 16:35

Now I feel old.
Apparently when I was little all I wanted to do was work there!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/11/2018 16:35

Wilko's, B&M, the Works- all fill the void for me.

ElideLochan · 30/11/2018 16:36

no - it was a shop, there are other shops

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 30/11/2018 16:42

I miss it, although Wilko is a good surrogate Woolies. I still have some utensils and Pyrex from there, and every time I use them I think fondly of the Woolworths on Finchley Road where I bought them.

bellinisurge · 30/11/2018 16:43

You can tell in most towns which buildings were Woolies. It was soooo not like other shops. Bought my first record in Woolies in the 80s.
Affordable stuff, nice variety. Long lasting clothes. Brilliant place. I miss it.

Mentounasc · 30/11/2018 16:44

Ah, I was in Woolworths earlier today.

Not a time traveller, I just don't live in the UK. Be reassured that Woolies is as crap as it ever was, in a fairly endearing way.

PrivateParkin · 30/11/2018 16:45

Yes I do - I used to work there, it used to be crazily busy at this time of year!! We used to have a late night shopping "event" in the run up to Christmas - it was such a big deal, it seems weird to think of that now.

I've still got some Woolies own brand Christmas lights.

MadisonAvenue · 30/11/2018 16:47

I do still miss it, especially at Christmas.

hmmwhatatodo · 30/11/2018 16:50

I loved woolworths as a child/teenager. We always lived in smallish places so it was a great shop for us. I could spend ages in there trying to choose Christmas cards and admiring the new singles that had just come out.

Roystonv · 30/11/2018 16:50

Weirdly was thinking about how useful it was last night and only last week was saying to someone how good the Ladybird clothes were. We are in a rural market town and don't have a Wilko etc so yes, I do miss it. A small Tesco moved into ours and stocks things like jars of capers and no basics range - no way as useful!

PrivateParkin · 30/11/2018 16:51

bellini yes - the white tiled front? There's one in our town.

TheFairyCaravan · 30/11/2018 16:53

Yes I still miss it.

When I was having my nails done the other day we were talking about how much we miss it especially now it's Christmas. When our kids were little I used to get most of their toys in there.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 30/11/2018 16:54

B&M Stores, Wilko's, Poundland and Clas Ohlsen cover the 'useful bits and pieces' part of what Woolworth's sold.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 30/11/2018 16:54

Miss the haberdashery section though.

Racecardriver · 30/11/2018 16:57

Take a trip to Australia. Woolworths is one of the biggest supermarket chains in Australia

2018dramaqueen · 30/11/2018 16:59

Where I live Wilko has moved into the old Woolworths shop! So definitely feels like it’s filled the void here :)

PrivateParkin · 30/11/2018 16:59

Yes same in NZ, but it's a food shop isn't it? It's not a high street Woolworths.

cantfocus1 · 30/11/2018 17:00

I totally miss Woolworths although I don’t have Willkos or B&M. We did have a 99p shop, I don’t like the pound shop or whatever the new version is.

FrankiesKnuckle · 30/11/2018 17:03

Used to work in a Woolies after school on a late night Thursday and Saturdays - way back when you got cash wages on a Saturday and could work at 15!
Was there for 2 years, ended up on the record counter, it really was the best!
I still have some Woolies Christmas lights, that I've lost the plug for - any ideas?

LucheroTena · 30/11/2018 17:03

Woolies was much better quality than B&M and Wilkos. I miss it. Oh the record section

SneakyGremlins · 30/11/2018 17:04

I was the last customer in hours, aged 10 Grin
