Ten years since Woolworths closed Does anyone else still miss it?

It was a good place to do a Christmas shop if you wanted to get all or at least most of your Christmas shop all in one place in one hit DH liked it for this reason. I remember my mum buying us Ladybird books from here. They were on a stand near the entrance near the pick and mix.

Bought loads of tapes there as a teen. Last winter my mum gave me a scarf and gloves set still in its Woolworths carrier bag which shed never worn. Dusky pink and the scarf is really thick and kept my neck warm during Beast from the East.

I remember the last thing i bought from there before it closed was the Christmas Radio Times for Christmas 2008.

I miss it, all the replacement places are in retail parks in our town but Woolies was in the centre it was easy to get to and I used to work there. I still have the first proper pan I ever bought from there Grin

thenightsky · 30/11/2018 17:07

I think Boyes is more like Woollies. It has a proper haberdashery for one thing.

Fifthtimelucky · 30/11/2018 17:08

I'm in a small town so don't have Wilko, B&M, Poundland or any of the options mentioned. I still miss Woolies.

MissMalice · 30/11/2018 17:08

I miss those Tesco Homeplus stores. They were perfect for doing Christmas shopping quickly.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 30/11/2018 17:12

Fond memories of Ladybird clothes- I had a red dressing gown with buttons in the shape of 🐞

2018dramaqueen · 30/11/2018 17:20

I bought my 16 year old sons first baby item from there back when I was 17 and had no money, a Winnie the Pooh night light projector thing, ahhhh the memories, he loved that night light!

Blastandtroph · 30/11/2018 17:22

I remember getting my first mix tape from there. Had the track 'Knock on Wood' on it. Had the same dressing gown as you MrsScrubbingbrush.

HelenaDove · 30/11/2018 17:25

No Wilkos here either and a very small B&M.

I used to work there. I don't agree that Wilkos and B&M fill the gap. There isn't the same selection of toys in Wilko and the quality is poorer in B&M. Neither does children's clothes.

Wilko's is arguably better for homeware, i'll give it that.

I still have loads of stuff i bought there.

StealthPolarBear · 30/11/2018 17:28

Yes I miss it!

MrsFogi · 30/11/2018 17:29

Yes I still miss it. Wilkos just doesn't quite fill the gap left behind. The pick and mix was great, Ladybird kids clothing useful, sewing stuff and household stuff reliable.

Ohyesiam · 30/11/2018 17:30

Top 10 singles and pick n mix from the Woolies on Camden High Street. That was Saturday mornings for me as a tween.

DGRossetti · 30/11/2018 17:35

How weird ... only yesterday DW and I were reminiscing, and I asked when she thought the decline of the High St. started, and she said "when Woolies went ..."

for myself, Alders was probably a wake-up call ...

fond memories ... scrabbling to buy DS an XBox for Xmas with a 10% discount ...

SwedishEdith · 30/11/2018 17:37

Like pp, I've still got utensils and Pyrex from there. I don't like B&M at all and don't really know Wilkos. Ladybird clothes were good quality.

I really miss Ethel Austin as well.

spiderlight · 30/11/2018 17:41

In my teens, I used to go into town with my best friend every Saturday morning without fail, and our first stop was always Woolworth for a big bag of pick'n'mix. Foam shrimps and white mice :)

Icklepup · 30/11/2018 17:47

There's Woolworth in Germany, not the same as all those years ago though.

Saisong · 30/11/2018 17:47

Woolies shut just as I was starting a family, and Adams followed soon after - which left our small town bereft of anywhere to get baby clothes.

zen1 · 30/11/2018 17:54

I still miss it, especially at Christmas (still get the ‘have a cracking Christmas at Woolworths’ theme tune in my head when the Christmas ads start on the tele). You can always spot former Woolworths stores!

citiesofbismuth · 30/11/2018 17:57

I love Wilko more than Woolworths now.

duhast · 30/11/2018 18:02

I miss it but not how it was at the end.
I think those diagonal aisles killed it off. I hated them, they messed with my head!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 30/11/2018 18:08

I miss Woolies. I still have Woolly and Woof mini soft toys: those adverts were the best

ForalltheSaints · 30/11/2018 18:29

I don't miss it as I hardly ever went there, which was the same as with many people, hence its closure. In any case they refused to stock the record I was on, when it was released, and they were important for the sales of singles (vinyl or CD). Their demise I am sure was in part a result of changing ways of purchasing or listening to music.

MiddlingMum · 30/11/2018 18:42

I still have lots of things from there. In fact, I was using a ruler with Woolworths on it just a few minutes ago. In a couple of weeks I will hang up my oldest Christmas decoration, bought by my parents in 1958 - it still has the Woolworths price sticker on it - 1/6 (7 and a half pence).

It was great for children's basic clothes - I find it hard to image children nowadays without their Ladybird vests and socks.

labazs · 30/11/2018 18:44

this time of year is when i miss it the most you could get all your gifts decs etc from there. i remember buying my first make up from there and my first records

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 30/11/2018 18:46

@Mentounasc
@Icklepup
Yep, still very odd, but no longer with the fluffy , sitting-room-esque atmosphere it had when I was a kid and my gran took me there.
