Should I complain to Tesco about this? (Graphic picture warning)

So I walked into town earlier with the kids, and it took a bit longer than I had planned (long post office queues etc). On the way home DD1 (who is 4, wears pull-ups, and isn't toilet trained yet; and who has quite pronounced developmental, social and communication needs - likely autistic but awaiting appointment with paediatrician) started crying and getting distressed but wouldn't say what was wrong, other than she was 'wet' (although I couldn't see any obvious wetness on her trousers when I checked). By this point we were literally halfway home (about 10 mins away) and no changing facilities or anything nearby since we were just in a residential street. So I just told her we would be home in a bit and I'd sort her out as soon as we got home, but she was really wailing by this point. Due to her communication issues all she could say was that she was 'wet'. Got home and went to change her nappy and was horrified to see the sides of the nappy were covered in blood, where it had literally gotten wet and chaffed against her skin so badly on the way home. She's got huge blisters on each side of her leg and I feel just awful. I've covered each side in nappy cream and put some bandage over it, but don't know what else to do. I've never seen her as upset as she was when I got home and I had to try and clean her up and sort her legs out as she was so sore poor thing. The thing is I've never had this before, and can only assume, because Tesco have recently moved over to a new 'Fred and Flo' own-make of pull-ups that they are made out of a slightly rougher material than the old ones? Should I make a complaint to Tesco or chalk it up as just one of those things?

OP so sad for your DD, that looks so painful.

I think despite the telephone advice I would still be getting her looked at this evening, just to be on the safe side.

Hope she is ok overnight. x

debbiewest0 · 30/11/2018 18:44

I assume Fred and Flo are the Tesco basics everyday value range repackaged? Or are all their nappies Fred and Flo?
As I’ve seen all their new “exclusive” brands are in fact what used to be everyday value in new coverings!

As we use Tesco nappies and have always been ok but wouldn’t have used the everyday value ones as I worried about their safety. I think they’re being very misleading in Tesco actually
Hope your daughter recovers soon xx

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 19:19

Hi Debbie. As far as I am aware the 'Fred and Flo' have replaced their standard 'Tesco baby' range rather than their economy range.

Shock your poor DD. I agree that looks like a burn.

StealthPolarBear · 30/11/2018 19:26

And yes by the time a child is walking three hours is pushing it a bit but not extreme. Actually I am not sure if it's really pushing it.

MrsScamander · 30/11/2018 19:57

That is awful! If you're on Twitter I'd send them a very public tweet with the picture attached!

debbiewest0 · 30/11/2018 20:03

Oh right- I usually use Tesco baby! So thank you very much for sharing this story to warn us.
I was off to grab nappies tomorrow so I’ll ignore any Tesco brands I think.

starandson · 30/11/2018 20:10

The nappy does look quite full but it definitely looks like chemical burns, happened to my DS with Aldi nappies. Hope she’s ok.

Mooey89 · 30/11/2018 20:14

Oh the poor love!
Please don’t beat yourself up, 3 hours is not excessively long and you didn’t know.
DS did this with ASDA ones before, not so badly though.
I hope Tesco recall ASAP

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/11/2018 20:17

Oh God Good the poor little lamb.
I'm almost in tears here looking at the blood in that picture thinking about how much pain she must have been in.
Its not a case of are you being unreasonable to complain.
You have to complain.
That's disgusting

Magenta46 · 30/11/2018 20:23

I put my newborn in cloth nappies. At age 7 weeks they had a hideous rash. Doctor told me to put baby in disposable diapers. It wasn't the product that was the issue just very sensitive skin.

KennDodd · 30/11/2018 20:26

I don't know if complain is the right word but Tesco need informing urgently about this. Don't dispose of the nappy either. Tesco will probably want to examine it to determine what the problem is.

Smurf123 · 30/11/2018 20:26

This is terrible hope she is feeling OK.. I've just bought the Fred and flo pull ups for my 9 month old.. But wary of using them now...

BertramKibbler · 30/11/2018 20:29

F&F nappies are horrible. I’d bought several packs for my daughters and they both red raw. Heap of crap.

KennDodd · 30/11/2018 20:32

I should add, my son had a reaction like this once. He was wearing the normal brand he always wore it was just that he had a soft poo that reacted with the wee causing burns like this on his bum and legs so it might not be anything to do with the nappy your daughter was wearing. It might be because of the nappy though, that's why Tesco need informing and tests should be done on the nappy.

sohypnotic · 30/11/2018 20:33

Aw poor daughter. Those patches look exactly like chemical burns I received off a special burns dressing! So I ended up with chemical burns around a boiling water burn Confused So be careful what you dress them with as she obviously has sensitive skin there. Keep uncovered as much as possible and be very careful of bathing. Good luck!

picklemepopcorn · 30/11/2018 20:38

After a wash, use a hairdryer on cool to dry her off.

Dab cream on, drapolene is very good- softer and easier to apply, and good for burns.

OlennasWimple · 30/11/2018 20:39

Poor DD

My DD didn't get along with Sainsbury's nappies for some reason, though nothing as extreme as that. It's always worth telling a shop if there is a problem with their product - how are they supposed to know if no-one tells them?

Personally I wouldn't tweet pictures of my DD's inner legs - an email should suffice, and is far more private

Pandasarecute · 30/11/2018 20:41

Irrelevant to the issue but in many areas your health visitor can contact the continence team on your behalf and you can get nappies / pull ups provided for children who have additional needs. In some areas the age older. PM me if you want more information

Justletmego · 30/11/2018 20:41

I had these in my basket tonight have just moved them out for pampers again! Glad I didn’t give them a try on my SN daughter 😱

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 20:42

Thank you for all of your replies. I'm still feeling very upset about it all. Put her to bed a little while ago and if anything they looked worse. If not showing any signs of improvement in the morning I'm going to take her to be seen in person.

Tesco have asked me to take one of the nappies from that pack into one of their stores so they can send it off for testing, and they've said they'll get back to me once they have the test results back. They've also sent me a £10 Tesco voucher to buy DD1 a present (which I can't decide whether it's a nice gesture or a bit of an insulting poor apology gesture).

You know what I've noticed the wet wipes now are so rough I won't buy them this new range is shit, hope your DD is ok

GobbyMcGobshite · 30/11/2018 20:48

I used to use Aldi, and then started to used these nappies for a few months as it was easy to put them on our Tesco order and the same happened to my DS a few times. I thought it was nappy rash from teething/food etc and had no idea it could have been chemical burns. His legs looked the same as your LO's. It was only once I'd stopped using them I realised it was the nappy all along. I felt horrendous for not realising sooner and putting them on him daily! I think it's a mixture of the elastic being very tight and chafing the skin and the actual nappies not being able to hold much liquid before sagging right down to the knees and rubbing on the legs which then releases the chemicals onto the skin. I'd say about 5 times I walked into DS room to find the nappy had fully burst and the gel crystals were everywhere!

Warm baths and then sudocrem and no pants on helps a lot. And I changed to Sainsbury's own which I've had no problems with at all. They are lovely and soft and very stretchy so they clung a lot nicer to the skin on the legs and around the hips. No chafing due to the tightness of the elastic and they don't sag after 1 wee like the Tesco ones do.

GobbyMcGobshite · 30/11/2018 20:51

And as the PP mentioned the wipes (new ones - fred and flo) are rough too. I used one to take off make up swatches on my arm and it made my skin red raw and start to burn. Chucked the remainder of the wipes I had in the bin and went to buy some Johnson's ones which we're now using until I find a cheaper version which are still decent.

KennDodd · 30/11/2018 21:15

@KitKat1985

Did Tesco not ask for the dirty nappy as well? I would have thought they'd want to test that as well in case it's her poo (maybe something she ate?) that's caused the problem.
