Should I complain to Tesco about this? (Graphic picture warning)

So I walked into town earlier with the kids, and it took a bit longer than I had planned (long post office queues etc). On the way home DD1 (who is 4, wears pull-ups, and isn't toilet trained yet; and who has quite pronounced developmental, social and communication needs - likely autistic but awaiting appointment with paediatrician) started crying and getting distressed but wouldn't say what was wrong, other than she was 'wet' (although I couldn't see any obvious wetness on her trousers when I checked). By this point we were literally halfway home (about 10 mins away) and no changing facilities or anything nearby since we were just in a residential street. So I just told her we would be home in a bit and I'd sort her out as soon as we got home, but she was really wailing by this point. Due to her communication issues all she could say was that she was 'wet'. Got home and went to change her nappy and was horrified to see the sides of the nappy were covered in blood, where it had literally gotten wet and chaffed against her skin so badly on the way home. She's got huge blisters on each side of her leg and I feel just awful. I've covered each side in nappy cream and put some bandage over it, but don't know what else to do. I've never seen her as upset as she was when I got home and I had to try and clean her up and sort her legs out as she was so sore poor thing. The thing is I've never had this before, and can only assume, because Tesco have recently moved over to a new 'Fred and Flo' own-make of pull-ups that they are made out of a slightly rougher material than the old ones? Should I make a complaint to Tesco or chalk it up as just one of those things?

Hi. Just to say I've just spoken to our minor injuries unit on the phone. I explained what happened and that her legs were really sore, and that I wasn't sure if it was chaffing or a chemical burn. They said in either instance their advice would be just to use sudocream and leave the area uncovered to aid healing, so no real point taking her there as nothing they can do sadly.

I would get her looked at ASAP so they could maybe dress it or apply something that might make it a little less uncomfortable. Your poor dd and poor you op, but don't feel bad or like a bad mum. 99% of the time a child saying they're wet and whinging just has a very heavy wet nappy or at worst had a sneaky non smelly poo hiding, no parent ever would be able to figure out it was chafing so badly Flowers

Skatersbeskating · 30/11/2018 17:12

Thats horrific. I would be going to a walk in centre or see own G.P.

After the skin has started to revover with medical treatment, I would consider Yellow Metanium dabbed NOT rubbed on skin.

Like I say, after medical treatment & for future.

Kitkat sorry I cross posted with you. That's fair enough so if that's there advice. I was just going on what happened us recently when my baby ds cut his foot and gp's nurse cleaned it up and dressed it for me but different injury obviously.

seventhgonickname · 30/11/2018 17:13

Don't put egg white on unless you want to risk salmonella Inthe wounds. It used to be used on bed sores in hospital way back Inthe 70s.

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 17:15

Hi. I'm pleased I spoke to minor injuries anyway as I wasn't sure whether I needed to take her or not, so at least they have confirmed that I'm looking after it the right way, although it's a shame there's not much they can do.

IShitGlitter · 30/11/2018 17:16

They look so sore poor baby! I would take to own GP or local minor injuries even though youve spoken on the phone I would want them seen.

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 17:16

Oh and to the poster who asked, it was an online shop order so no 'physical' shop that I can go to and complain to.

I think I'd be tweeting those pics to Tesco. As you say you will likely get a generic email so at least then it's out there for others to see. Maybe more people will come forward and they can be recalled. That looks horrendous, poor mite. 🙁
My baby used to get terrible thrush on her bum and it was heartbreaking when it was sore and weeping. But on the upside baby's usually heal quickly 🤞

ALemonyPea · 30/11/2018 17:20

Poor little sausage, hope she's out of pain and it eases soon.

Hope you get a decent reply from your complaint.

Pompom42 · 30/11/2018 17:20

Is complain I'm sure I saw someone on Facebook a month or two ago complaining about this very thing.

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 17:23

I'll try tweeting them too.

A minor injuries unit told you to treat a potential burn with an oil-based cream? If it's a burn, that's the last thing you should be putting on - you need a burn gel which is water based.

Did they understand how large the area was? Because if it's bigger than a postage stamp, it's a large area and warrants a trip to minor injuries.

I'd also give calpol if your daughter will tolerate it, because she must be in pain. Poor child. Shame on Tesco Angry. We've all had circumstances where a nappy has gone longer than would be ideal, still shouldn't cause a reaction like that.

AnnieOH1 · 30/11/2018 17:34

Honestly I feel this is just a very extreme and unfortunate circumstance. Aldi changed theirs recently and brought problems to my 3 year old, we've changed TO the Fred and Flo ones because of it.

Tesco will no doubt see you sorted even more because you've posted on Mumsnet. Chocolates for little one and flowers for you.

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 17:50

Annie I know it sounds a bit cliché, but I really genuinely don't want flowers, or a refund or anything, I just want then to look into what has happened so that it doesn't happen again to another child.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 30/11/2018 17:51

You keep saying about over due nappy change...please do not worry! We all are a little late with changes sometimes. I have never seen anything like this before!

I hope you get a bloody good response from Tesco! Poor baby, I hope her sores clear up fast! How is she coping with the pain? Would half a dose calpol help if she is hurting?

Hope you are OK too,

Perfectly1mperfect · 30/11/2018 17:52

Oh and to the poster who asked, it was an online shop order so no 'physical' shop that I can go to and complain to.

You can contact them about an online grocery shop if an item is missing or damaged so I'm sure you could contact them about this too using the same contact form.

KitKat1985 · 30/11/2018 17:58

Hi, yes she's had calpol. She's quiet though, and just playing on her tablet and doesn't want to walk much (understandable).

Perfectly - I have e-mailed them and sent them pictures. No reply yet though.

Perfectly1mperfect · 30/11/2018 18:11

Sorry kitkat. I missed that you had already emailed them. Hopefully they will take it seriously and not just offer you a voucher. I hope your daughter is ok, she'll be sore for a while I imagine, poor girl.

This is obviously nothing compared to your poor daughter but I have recently bought the new non fragranced Fred and Flo baby wipes and they smell awful. Not fragranced, just unpleasant. The previous wipes were much better. Hopefully they address the problems with this new line.

MiniMum97 · 30/11/2018 18:17

Oh my god that is appalling and definitely should not have happened in that timescale regardless of the fact you were slightly longer than expected.

danni0509 · 30/11/2018 18:22

Bless her @KitKat1985 you need some metanium and boots zinc and caster cream

My son had this after having a few days of diarrhoea, took his skin off and left it raw looking, was so awful they looked just like your photos but not as big and the metanium then zinc and caster over the top, sorted it out over a few days.

Howhot · 30/11/2018 18:26

Wow that's awful. She could of just had a reaction to these particular nappies but I'd definitely be complaining so they can look into it. Poor thing

SleepySofa · 30/11/2018 18:27

I’m not sure Sudafed is the best thing to put on. Can you get some Daktacort cream/ointment? I had something similar on my own thighs from maternity pads after DS was born, and that’s what I was prescribed. Otherwise, I’d possibly put savlon on. Or even metanium.

SleepySofa · 30/11/2018 18:30

Ok, just seen your later posts, if minor injuries say Sudafed, best stick with that. Poor little one. It really is appalling, even if you were a bit overdue changing her, that shouldn’t have happened.

WindyWednesday · 30/11/2018 18:32

Can you complain to trading standards or BBC watchdog. You need to complain somewhere where it will have an impact and change, rafter than Tesco who will fob you off with. A gift card.
