Eat fish smell like fish?

It only happens when I eat cod or haddock but I notice I smell a bit like fish the next day no matter how much I wash. I literally don't dare eat white fish during the week in case I smell at work - it's so embarrassing. It never happens if I eat tuna and I am allergic to shellfish so that's as adventurous as I get with seafood! Has anyone else ever had this happen? Cringe!

Yes I get this. My wee smells awful too.

eyeswideshit · 28/11/2018 20:47

Me too. I read somewhere it's a genetic thing. Everyone else in my family are the same.

minkies11 · 28/11/2018 20:48

Yep - it's weird! Don't feel ill or an thing and love fish n chips but makes me self conscious. Swear it only started a couple of years ago.

Me too. & My mum so I concur with the family thing.

ThePortlyPinUp · 28/11/2018 20:54

Me and my sister too so also agree with the family thing. I only eat cod when I know I will be at home for the entire next day.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 20:56

Only with one DC. Not a body odour thing, but wee - wet nappies smell of cod or whatever after a fish and chips treat, or fishfingers. I remember the same sort of thing with Sugar Puffs as a child, and asparagus now.

minkies11 · 28/11/2018 20:58

Had heard of asparagus but never fish - or Sugarpuffs Smile.

Not me! Grin

MunchMunch · 28/11/2018 21:03

Yes I get it too when I eat fish from the chippy. I think the smell seeps out of my pores as well as my wee stinking of fish. It's so embarrassing especially when I use a public toilet and there's someone waiting to use the loo after me!

And yes, I've only noticed it in the last few years and only when I've had fish and chips so it isn't any kind of infection.

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:06

My DCs have never had Sugar Puffs, so I don't know if it's still the same. No similar fragrant problem with the occasional Frosties though, (not completely sugar-deprived!) Wink

The worse thing though was the unexpected and initially worrying shock after Red Velvet cake - put us right off!

Arrivederci · 28/11/2018 21:10

Oh my gosh sugar puff pee is very distinctive!

minkies11 · 28/11/2018 21:14

Actually want to eat some Sugar puffs now to see if it makes me smell! Bizarre I know Grin

Rarfy · 28/11/2018 21:16

Me and dp both get this. Ming of fish the next day. A panty liner helps!

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:17

We'll await your experiment results!

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:19

It's funny because I've never noticed it on people out and about - only little cod bottom DC here!

minkies11 · 28/11/2018 21:20

DH is a chef so I'll ask him to combine cod, sugar puffs and asparagus into a meal and see what happens! Grin

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:34

Oh my. Get out the clothes pegs. Grin

SneakyGremlins · 28/11/2018 21:34

BlackBelt well how close do you get to people out and about Grin

codenameduchess · 28/11/2018 21:34

I did a boot camp and the meal plan was fish heavy... every day, sometimes 2 or 3 meals a day with some kind of fish. I reeked!!

After I finished the 6 weeks a friend admitted I'd smelled for about a month 😂 it's thoroughly put me off fish now.

Another friend is a HCP and said when handling pee samples there are some that smell super fishy too so it's pretty common 🤷🏼‍♀️

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:38

Can I ask, OP, is it great having a chef DH - does he cook lots at home? Or is it like having a builder, plumber, decorator and so on DH - you can't get them to do your own such jobs at home?!

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:40

Hello there, Sneaky! As close as they and the police will let me, of course Grin

oldsilver · 28/11/2018 21:48

Oh my. Shock I had this the first time last week - never noticed it before. Was actually going to start a thread.

52, been eating cod lots all my life - it was really ...er.... pungent. Kept thinking if I could smell it so could others.

SerenDippitty · 28/11/2018 21:49

There is actually a condition called trimethylaminuria or fish odour syndrome though it is rare

BlackBeltInChildWrangling · 28/11/2018 21:50

Just to say

  1. I am now craving the culinary delight of fishfinger sandwiches!
  1. Little Cod Wee Bottom is a DS, so it's not exclusively a womanly issue.
HidingFromMyKids · 28/11/2018 22:13

How strange!
I was going to Google this exact thread title a few days ago after eating fish and chips and I forgot about it until now.
I thought it must be a pregnancy thing and made a mental note not to eat fish again.
Is it really strong enough for others to smell it?
