Eat fish smell like fish?

It only happens when I eat cod or haddock but I notice I smell a bit like fish the next day no matter how much I wash. I literally don't dare eat white fish during the week in case I smell at work - it's so embarrassing. It never happens if I eat tuna and I am allergic to shellfish so that's as adventurous as I get with seafood! Has anyone else ever had this happen? Cringe!

Surely that should be COD?!

I remember the same sort of thing with Sugar Puffs

Funnily enough one of my brothers (although none of us eat sugar puffs) always used to say his first wee of the day smells like sugar puffs.

I agree with the fish one. Not enough to put me off eating fish though!

The strongest smell is of course curry from the night before. I always reek of it.

It's fish on Fridays, traditionally, so I wonder if more people will be suffering in the morning?!

Lasagne. If I eat lasagne and ever get sweaty it smells of it

Nothing else

lovetherisingsun · 30/11/2018 22:34

I don't, but my husband and his mum do (they're not english). Especially when they eat onions or lamb, or when (which she always does) drinks a bottle.of wine.

There was something, (and I really can't remember what, as it was long ago), that caused wee fragrance reminiscent of rabbit/guinea pig/hamster bedding - I promise no little pet critters had been eaten beforehand!

I get it with cod, too! So glad I’m not alone.

It’s caused by a compromised ability to metabolise trimethylamine, which is the molecule in fish that smells. It’s normally metabolised via oxidation and the oxidised molecule doesn’t smell.

It is genetic. People who inherit the gene from both parents will have trimethylaminuria or fish odour syndrome which means they smell very bad even from eating other types of food that contain choline, like eggs.

People with only one version of the gene will just smell slightly fishy after eating fish.

That's very interesting, pp. Do you have any explanations for the other aromas?

workshyfop · 01/12/2018 22:04

No sorry I only know about fish Grin

CleanBee · 01/12/2018 22:09

How funny, I’d never heard of this. I guess we don’t have the gene anywhere in my family.

Bodies are fascinating!
