How much sleep do you get/need?

Recently come to the realisation my optimum sleep is 9 hours. I’m a good sleeper and rarely wake up in the night, I do an office job and not overly physically active so it makes me wonder why I need so much.
Less than 8 I’m groggy, less than 7 it seriously starts to affect my day.
Typical week day I’m in bed for 11 and alarms set at 7.30

I'm the same, ideally I'd get 10 hours! I've always needed a lot of sleep. ..

Upsy1981 · 27/11/2018 22:48

Around 8 hours I think. I sleep terribly. I usually get about 6 solid hours then possibly the odd bit of dozing, restless sleep so I live in a constant sleep deficit.

inisfree · 27/11/2018 22:51

I am the same I need a minimum of nine hours or else I don't function as well. I don't think I've ever pulled an 'all nighter'.

Bimwit · 27/11/2018 22:52

8-10hrs

I need at least ten. I rarely get it, I've always needed lots of sleep but I've had young kids/a baby for the last 13 years so I've not got it.
It's only been the last 6 months that they have all reliably been sleeping through the night.
I'm also one of those annoying people that can catnap anywhere.

Pinkginxx · 27/11/2018 22:54

I’m trying to get into a routine of getting to bed a bit earlier she says lying in bed on her phone but it makes me feel a bit wimpy/precious that I need more than the mythical 8 hours.
Colleagues seem to survive quite well at much less looking at you getting up at 5 to walk dog person

@shecamefromgreece yes! I’ve always been a nap anywhere person. Just sit me down and I’ll doze anywhere. Once fell asleep right next to the track in a F1 race

I function best on a lot of sleep, 9 hours usually. Although I'm currently running on about 3 hours a night, my 9 week old baby doesn't seem to love sleep as much as me😴

homebirds · 27/11/2018 23:21

I honestly don't know how you have the time to sleep for more than 8 hours. I hope for 7 through the week but rarely get it.

twinnywinny14 · 27/11/2018 23:32

I get up at half 5 to leave home at 7 for work, I’m usually nodding by half 9 so 8 hrs, some nights less some more depends what else is going on tbh

IchFliegeNach · 28/11/2018 04:34

Probably 8 hours. If it were down to me, I would be in bed for 11 and get up at 7 as a default setting.

Alas, with a 3 year old and a newborn, it is not down to me. However, I have learned that I can function on 3 hours really good quality sleep (haven't had that in the last two months either! 😂)

adoggymum · 28/11/2018 04:37

Need, around 8hrs (usually with an extra nap if I can!)

Get, 3hrs. Thanks insomnia 😩

NameChangeToAvoidBeingFound · 28/11/2018 04:39

3-6 hours normally but I do crash around once a month and sleep for up to three days at a time waking for 20 mins every 6 or so hours for a drink, bathroom and a snack before immediately sleeping again. But I'm autistic with severe ADHD and my brain doesn't make enough melatonin for me to need any more sleep than that.

MarcieBluebell · 28/11/2018 04:43

I'm not normal but 16 hours!

Stoneagemum · 28/11/2018 04:47

Left to my own devices 9-10 hours, due to work more like 7-8 but once a month or so spend a whole day in bed to catch up.

blackcat86 · 28/11/2018 04:54

Ideally I'd get 9-10hrs but i have a 3.5 month old baby so that's not happening! When you say people get up earlier, is it because they are in bed earlier? I would usually wake between 6-7am pre baby even on weekends because I just can't sleep in but I also like to go to bed much earlier and if I'm at home this would be at 9pm ish.

Juanbablo · 28/11/2018 06:29

I like to get around 8 hours of sleep. 10-6 is my perfect sleep time. But I'm not a good sleeper, all sorts of things affect my sleep. So I don't often get as much sleep as I would like.

silkpyjamasallday · 28/11/2018 06:44

I have insomnia, induced by non sleeping 2 year old DD, I probably average 3 or 4 hours a night. One night my Fitbit said I'd slept for a grand total of 58 minutes Sad The lack so sleep has a horrendous effect on my MH, and I don't believe any other adjustments to my lifestyle will improve it, it all hinges on getting enough sleep. I'm functioning, but only just.

pinkhorse · 28/11/2018 07:06

How on earth do you all have time to sleep so much! I feel like I'm missing out on life if I sleep that much. I usually get around 7 hours max.

Odiepants · 28/11/2018 07:38

6-7 hours is a good night here and that has at least 1 wake up. A bad night is less than 5 with lots of wake up but I can function fine for quite a while. I can't nap in the day anymore.

I've not needed much sleep since being a teenager and DS is the same. He's fine on 7-8 hours though he's better on 9 and he's nearly 9. DH on the other hand would sleep 12 hrs given the chance.

MessyBun247 · 28/11/2018 07:43

Sleep at 10, awake at 7, perfect.

Hardly ever happens though!

naicepineapple · 28/11/2018 07:51

I usually get 8 if my 2yo is playing ball, I'd like 9 though.

BadlyAgedMemes · 28/11/2018 08:07

I used to get c. 4 hours a night on average for years, just out of insomnia. I could function, but it definitely wasn't enough. These days I can usually get 7 hours, and feel more able to tackle things, make choices and feel healthier. If there's nothing artificially waking me up in the morning (rare), I can easily sleep 9 hours, though.
