How much sleep do you get/need?

Recently come to the realisation my optimum sleep is 9 hours. I’m a good sleeper and rarely wake up in the night, I do an office job and not overly physically active so it makes me wonder why I need so much.
Less than 8 I’m groggy, less than 7 it seriously starts to affect my day.
Typical week day I’m in bed for 11 and alarms set at 7.30

8hrs is ideal but rarely get it as go bed too late and alarm goes off 6 or 6.30!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 28/11/2018 08:16

I need 9 but have worked out that my sleep/wake cycle is naturally more like 27 hours than 24. I'm other words I feel well tested after 9 hours but then don't get tired for about another 15 hours. Which makes life difficult and results in a lot of nights of not enough sleep or still feeling wide awake at midnight.

MissCalamity · 28/11/2018 08:25

Probably 9 hours would be good.
I get between 6-7 a night depending on kids being crap/needing the toilet.
I woke up today & my alarm side 12.15am , which unfortunately it wasn't as the power had gone off actually 7.45am however I could have slept for another 5 hours Hmm
I was very disappointed Grin

IRun4Me · 28/11/2018 08:31

Another one with insomnia here. It’s never been great but since I hit peri-menopause it is awful. I average about 3.5 hours but anything above 4 hours I consider a bonus.
Some days I function ok other times I barely function and get run down so easily.
I’m so jealous of people who sleep.

Hellohah · 28/11/2018 08:41

I normally go to bed at 9.45 (asleep for 10), I get up at 6.15 - so that's just over 8 hours.

I've been staying up a bit later (because of I'm a Celeb) and it's been ok, but I can feel myself missing that extra hour or so.

I'd probably end up murdering someone if I only got 3 hours.

Bloodybridget · 28/11/2018 08:51

Most nights I get 6 - 7 hours, I think - always broken by a spell of an hour or two awake. This does me pretty well; if it's less than six hours for a prolonged period I do feel very tired and need a nap. But when I was younger I used to fall asleep during the day a lot, on public transport, in films and concerts etc. - I don't do that now.

slappinthebass · 28/11/2018 10:01

I feel like 7 is my optimal, 8 and I'm more groggy. I tend to get 5-6 though.

DevonshireCreamTea · 28/11/2018 10:07

3 hours
I need 9 LOL

Stripybeachbag · 28/11/2018 10:14

It's all over the place considering that I leave the house at exactly the same time everyday - 7 am.

I try to fall asleep by 10 (never), usually 11, and then the alarm should wake me at 6.15, but I usually wake before at between 4 and 6.

My aim is 8 hours but actually get 5-7. I do suffer from it.

anitagreen · 28/11/2018 10:16

I go to bed around 12-1 and wake up anywhere between 9-11am

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 28/11/2018 10:50

Ideally 8 hours but as I have to get up at 5am during the week that would mean being asleep by 9 so that rarely happens. I usually get about 7.

Deadringer · 28/11/2018 11:06

At least 8 suits me, but I usually only get about 6. Sometimes it takes me ages to get to sleep, and I usually wake ages before I need to and just doze. Consequently I am always tired.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 28/11/2018 11:12

I need 7-8 hours and would sleep straight without waking.
Unfortunately the baby is a crap sleeper so currently getting 4-6 broken hours a night. Can't nap during the day as have older child.
I'm sure il have a good nights sleep again some day 😭

Ollivander84 · 28/11/2018 11:42

I usually do 6-7hrs then occasionally crash and sleep for 12 Grin
I do nap most days after work for a couple of hours (two jobs, health issues)

Cineraria · 28/11/2018 12:02

For me it's more about getting a good continuous stretch of sleep, I've learnt, thanks to a couple of refluxy babies who didn't do lying flat without screaming. If I can get three to four hours uninterrupted and maybe another hour, I can cope without caffeine even if DS2 keeps me awake until it's time for me to get up with DS1 and then has a lie in himself. Typically, though, I don't get more than a two hour unbroken sleep as the longest stretch so am always tired. I think in an ideal world, I'd have seven hours with no more than one wake-up. One day...

stopgap · 28/11/2018 12:27

7-8 to feel great, get 6, and that’s with the help of over-the-counter sleeping pills. I’d rather take them, though, and get decent-ish sleep, than not very much at all.

GoldenBuns · 28/11/2018 21:47

Generally, I only sleep 5-6 hours. I wake frequently to go to the loo and have horrendous nightmares. I would love to get 7-8 hours, but I just don't seem to be wired that way. Sad

Catra · 29/11/2018 00:18

Night owl here. Left to my own devices I would sleep 12.30am - 9am. However, I have a husband whose alarm goes off at 6am and a 7-month old who screams blue murder if she isn't fed every 2-3 hours, so forget it.

Bigonesmallone3 · 29/11/2018 00:19

Not enough
A lot more
😴

Wordthe · 29/11/2018 00:28

I find 7 hours is about right for me
I'm also a night owl and to go to bed between 2 and 3, get up between 9 and 10

there seem to be a lot of long sleepers on here!

seventhgonickname · 29/11/2018 01:28

Have had to come off hrt so not getting enough to sleep.I need 8 hrs undisturbed sleep but waking 4-5 times due to overheating means I'm exhausted all the time.Off sick at the moment so doing a lot of catching up and feel much better.

GhostsToMonsoon · 29/11/2018 15:57

I'd like 9 but usually get 7-8. Some nights I fall asleep straight away, others I just can't get to sleep, or wake up early and can't get back to sleep. I always need the loo in the night, and we also now have a puppy who often needs a 5am poo.

Really recommend Matthew Walker's book 'Why We Sleep'.

gladiatorgirl · 29/11/2018 16:17

Between 3 and 4 hours if i'm lucky. Chronic insomnia for years. I get a bit worried when I read that if you don't get 7/8 hrs a night then you knock so many minutes of your life expectancy( Not sure of the exact numbers) By this reckoning, I think i'm likely to shake off this mortal coil sometime soon.

NotN0wBernard · 29/11/2018 16:22

Part-time insomniac here too. If I get 5 hours in a row I feel super human! 6 or 7 hours broken sleep is fine too
I've never needed a great deal of sleep and can't sleep later than 7am no matter what time I've gone to sleep. I notice that I sleep more in the winter. My kids, like me, seem to be solar powered!

WhatHaveIFound · 29/11/2018 16:36

I'm getting around 5½ hours sleep at the moment but i really need more. It's down to parent problems (which tie up the days) so i'm having to work in the evenings to make up the time.
