Do you love coffee?! What do you use at home?

I had a Nespresso machine for years and then the environmental guilt got too much. So it’s gone and I’ve been using ground coffee and a cafétière. So sad. Sad Haha! Obviously this is a first world problem! What do you use? A proper press? A bean to cup machine with in-built grinder? I miss having the crema layer and that proper smooth coffee taste!

I think Nespresso makes poor coffee. I use a grinder and a cafétiére.

sackrifice · 25/11/2018 07:53

Aeropress or stove top here. Usually aeropress.

Instant :o

We have a proper but basic espresso machine, beans, and a grinder - the machine is a great little thing, now discontinued, and we got it on clearance - it's lasted 3 years, so far. The grinder was more expensive in fact! Probably around £30 for the machine and £35 for the grinder.
Even with the more expensive espresso machines though, they pay for themselves 10 times over. Definitely worth investing in, imo. The capsules may be quick and easy, but they're a far lesser brew than freshly ground beans, I think. It only takes ten minutes to make two huge quadruple shot cups in the morning, and steaming the milk yourself gives better control. Highly recommend!

Ground coffee and a cafetière

BridgeFarmKefir · 25/11/2018 07:56

If I have a little time Chemex pour over. If shorter on time I use a grinder and cafetière. Get my beans from Pact. At work I use an Aeropress.

I'm another person who doesn't rate coffee capsules but it's personal preference I guess!

Oatomatom · 25/11/2018 07:57

Bean to cup machine - I fill my lidded cup and take it into work in about 3 minutes (Americano with warm milk). It’s great, but you do need a bit of kitchen side to put it on.

PARunnerGirl · 25/11/2018 07:59

@dilisk Shock How can you say such a thing?! Grin Interestingly, my friend also said the issue isn’t what makes your coffe but whether you start with beans or pre-ground coffee.

I used an Aeropress for years and loved it, but we have just bought a De Longhi espresso machine and I have to say I'm loving the coffee even more! I need to use less ground coffee, it's hotter, and the flavour is better. I mostly drink black coffee at home, but the milk steamer will be useful too (need to practise with that).

PARunnerGirl · 25/11/2018 08:03

Seem to be agreed that I need to start with the whole beans... maybe I’ll get a grinder first and see if that makes my cafétiére coffee better.

PARunnerGirl · 25/11/2018 08:05

@BloodyBridget Do you just buy ground coffee for your De Longhi? I only drink black or espresso too.

I grind my beans and then use a stove top moka pot.

PeevedOfPortishead · 25/11/2018 08:09

I buy ground and use a cafetiere - bought a metal one as got tired of shattering glass and leaving me without!

Have a portable machine stashed in a cupboard but was turned off when I found a pod on a very very remote beach - was a bit of a wake up moment.

Now looking towards grinding my own beans because I get through a lot of coffee which means several bags a week for landfill. So wondering if I can buy a giant sack of beans instead!

BillywigSting · 25/11/2018 08:10

A moka pot or a cafetiere.

Pour over cone filter for the good stuff I get once a month.

We're moving soon so I'm very tempted to ask for an espresso machine (from parents, they're offering to pay for furniture etc but we're taking what we have and the new kitchen is hideous. That might just make up for it!)

Watch out for Pact. They make it hard to unsubscribe which is part of their trick.

Lizsmum · 25/11/2018 08:13

Bean to cup De'longhi machine. I've just upgraded to a different model. The crema is very good and the milk frother is almost commercial standard. But it was eye wateringly expensive even with a black Friday offer.

BroomstickOfLove · 25/11/2018 08:17

Hand grinder with ceramic burrs and a Clever Coffee Dripper. Only really good fit r making one cup at a time, but that cup is wonderful.

Mide7 · 25/11/2018 08:19

Sage/ breville barista express with Rave coffee.

I’m in love with it, been throw all the other times of home coffee maker, nespresso, aero press, stove top and enjoy the proper espresso machine best.

It’s pretty expensive, although cheap for an espresso machine and grinder, but got it in interest free from John Lewis.

Pashazade · 25/11/2018 08:20

We use beans, Delonghi grinder (a burr grinder is the best type rather than blades) and an aeropress.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 25/11/2018 08:46

Chemex pour over. So simple, so good!

Coffeeandcrochet · 25/11/2018 08:57

Krups burr grinder and one of the cheaper DeLonghi espresso machines (about £60 4 years ago IIRC).

saltymofo · 25/11/2018 09:06

We've got a 10 year old Rancilio machine and separate coffee grinder which is very basic but sturdy so still going strong. We take an Aeropress on holiday. At work we have Nescafé Gold Blend and they have definitely changed the recipe in recent years. It's lovely!!

shamalawa · 25/11/2018 09:07

I have a Jura bean to cup machine with a built in milk fridge. It's amaze!

Def start off with a grinder, it'll make a world of difference

Ledkr · 25/11/2018 09:10

I use a little espresso machine with a milk frother on the side. It's was about 30 quid from Amazon and I love it

TimeToRevolutionize · 25/11/2018 09:11

I just use Aldi brand coffee. I love coffee, especially latte. I am into the Nescafé double chocolate mocha at the mo!
