Do you love coffee?! What do you use at home?

I had a Nespresso machine for years and then the environmental guilt got too much. So it’s gone and I’ve been using ground coffee and a cafétière. So sad. Sad Haha! Obviously this is a first world problem! What do you use? A proper press? A bean to cup machine with in-built grinder? I miss having the crema layer and that proper smooth coffee taste!

I love the aeropress but have never got the hang of the inverted method

did you watch the video...it is dead easy...

AdaColeman · 25/11/2018 18:17

I use a cafetière or a stove top espresso, sometimes even an old Parisienne double jug. My favourite coffee just now is Lavazza Oro.

ImogenTubbs · 25/11/2018 18:19

Ground coffee and an espresso maker does make good coffee. You can add extra hot water or hot milk to make it less strong.

I've never had a coffee maker and have always used a cafetiere. One of the best things I ever bought. As for coffee I have Tesco (yes I know that's unforgivable!) Columbian Ground strength 3. Only £2.29. It keeps it's gorgeous smell for weeks and is a lovely rich creamy taste. I can't do without it in the morning now Grin

AlienBotanist · 25/11/2018 18:30

Thank you thanks! Thanks

BooseysMom · 25/11/2018 18:30

@LizzieBennettDarcy... i noticed you get horrendous palpitations. I've been getting those too but only have 1 coffee a day then switch to tea which I suppose is still caffeinated. I think mine are down to the peri-menopause as it doesn't seem to be caffeine linked. I can go days without and not have any!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 25/11/2018 18:41

I use a cafetiere mostly, I have a metal one too, as like a pp I just keep breaking the glass ones!
I also have a metal paper free drip filter for if I just want one cup
Mostly buy Aldi or Tesco Italian ground or beans, and have a Krups burr grinder which I love.

I also really like my vacuum coffee percolator ,I have a really old style pyrex one, and a fancier Bodum one, they are faffier, but excellent entertainment value if you have people over. The water goes in the bottom, the coffee goes in the top section, the whole thing goes on the gas and as the water boils it whooshes up to the top part, turns into coffee and then sqooshes itself back down into the jug. The best thing about these is that the coffee is really hot, unlike filters and presses where you often find it to be cooler than you might like.

DH’s coffee station. God it’s annoying how long he takes weighing the beans and timing the extraction blah blah (switch off...).
But my morning coffee is bloody amazing!

@parrotonmyshoulder..wow that is a serious coffee station! Shock

TheMagician · 25/11/2018 19:45

Wow, that's in your house!? I'm so jealous.

parrotonmyshoulder · 25/11/2018 20:07

Yeah, but I have to put up with DH in order to have it!!

BooseysMom · 25/11/2018 21:31

🤣😆😂

AdoraBell · 25/11/2018 21:35

I use a standard French press/cafetière and I like Carte Noir or Machu Pichu from Cafe Direct.

Meet0nTheIedge · 25/11/2018 21:43

Aeropress for me, we've got a Nespresso but hardly ever use it now. I've never liked coffee made in a cafetiere.

Babelange · 25/11/2018 21:53

I got the tip to buy Sealpods from Mumsnet - reusable metal pods which can be used with Nespresso. I'd recommend the pack of 5 as they need to cool down before reuse (via Amazon). Costs about £50. Nespresso pods can be recycled: mail or in store (they send out bags).

RickOShay · 25/11/2018 21:58

I use a mocha on the stove. machine or cafetière coffee is never hot enough, I use ground decaf, co op do a lovely fair trade one.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 25/11/2018 22:23

BooseysMom fairly sure mine is the same reason but mine are def made worse by too much coffee/tea. I go onto Camomile in the afternoons as otherwise I get nights like tonight where they are dreadful.... thanks to the coffee I stupidly had around 4pm visiting family without thinking.

Bloodybridget · 25/11/2018 22:40

@IWantToUseAnApostrophy I like my coffee really strong, so I use a heaped scoop in the Aeropress, but in the espresso machine I only need a flat scoop.

Obviouspretzel · 26/11/2018 14:02

When you use the reusable Nespresso pods, does the coffee still have the crema on top like it does with the normal pods or are they adding something to the coffee that makes it do that, rather than it being created by the pressure (assuming that's what creates a crema?).

BooseysMom · 26/11/2018 18:57

@LizzieBennettDarcy.. maybe it is the caffeine with me then. But I'm like you..after 4pm and I'm wired for hours and feel sick and dizzy. I couldn't touch espresso any time of day Hmm

Meercat2 · 21/12/2018 07:37

We got a De Longhi bean to cup a year ago. I did some extensive research and that is what we ended up with. Best money I've ever spent

TheRealHousewife · 21/12/2018 07:41

Bean to cup machine. Rave beans which I find very very nice. They have a ‘Roasted on’ date so you know they are fresh. Also have the temp set to 93 for the water and 66 for the milk wand. Awesome cup of coffee. We’ve been known to omit having a coffee at the end of a meal when eating out as we know when can make a better cup of coffee at home(only some establishments)

BikeRunSki · 21/12/2018 07:43

I am allergic to coffee, but DH loves it. He used an Arropress? He days it’s the best present I ever gave himZ he’s bought one for work too.

TheRealHousewife · 21/12/2018 07:44

Obviouspretzel it’s the oils in the beans that create the crema. If the beans are too old or even too fresh, think within the 7-10 days after roasting, can reduce your crema.

Tassimo.
