Do you love coffee?! What do you use at home?

I had a Nespresso machine for years and then the environmental guilt got too much. So it’s gone and I’ve been using ground coffee and a cafétière. So sad. Sad Haha! Obviously this is a first world problem! What do you use? A proper press? A bean to cup machine with in-built grinder? I miss having the crema layer and that proper smooth coffee taste!

Bialetti stove top pot
Lavazza red coffee
Hot milk (well soya milk, hot milk upsets my stomach)

Buxbaum · 25/11/2018 09:13

Yes to a grinder, and I second the recommendation for Krups for a really good value one. It must have burrs, not a blade.

Then I use an Aeropress but a cafetière will work well too.

Coffee is a big priority in my life.
Gaggia Brera bean to cup here.
One of the favourite things in my life.

Ground coffee & a V60

De Longhi bean to cup machine with frother. I like the range of strengths and settings it has and you can make one or two cups, although the two cups would be quite small. When you’ve decided what suits you set it to My Coffee.

We use Aldi beans or Taylor’s of Harrogate if we’re feeling flush.

applespearsbears · 25/11/2018 09:17

Cafetière and Lidl's Guatemala Delux coffeeground

Reallybadidea · 25/11/2018 09:17

I use reusable Nespresso pods that you fill with coffee yourself. Saves the environmental guilt.

OneStepMoreFun · 25/11/2018 09:19

Cafetieres make way the best coffee. Nespresso is pap. Real espresso machines make bitter tar. Cafetieres make just the right balance.

I like grumpy mule coffee or specialist beans from the Algerian coffee shop on Old Compton Street. Just walking in there makes me swoon.

@PARunnerGirl yes I just use the same coffee I used in the Aeropress.

GimbleInTheWabe · 25/11/2018 09:29

DP is a barista for a naice roastery/coffee shop here in London.

At home we have a Sage grinder, a Chemex and a hario pouring kettle. If it's just me having coffee then we have a V60 pour over too. This is for filter coffee though. He weighs out the beans as well with this fancy weighing scale. Definitely always grind the whole beans and if you're really picky then have them roasted within the last two weeks and don't store the beans in the bloody fridge!! He uses Assembly coffee or Square Mile atm.

You'll never get a really great espresso at home as you need the pressure from the big machines to get it just right. The pod machines are fecking shite imo.

Wow... I’ve got even more decisions and choices now! Think I’ll be treating myself to something new and shiny for Christmas anyway Smile

Beans we grind then put in a Bialetti stove top. We make better coffee than anyone else I know Grin

Actually joking aside, when a friend with a coffee machine bean to cup thing offers me coffee I usually opt for tea. It never seems to taste as nice out of the machine.

DGRossetti · 25/11/2018 11:19

Probably too late now Sad but two years ago we got a deLonghi bean-to-cup jobbie ("Authentica") half price in a BF deal from them (we signed up with a more basic machine).

2 years on, and it's used daily. After much faffing, we've settled on Sainsburys Kenyan beans (usually £3.50, bit sometimes on special at £3.00).

One day, I will discover why they sell beans in 227g bags and machines only take 200g.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/11/2018 11:27

I have a deLonghi but not a bean to cup one. I love it, it’s probably my most valued possession! Has milk frother though I don’t use that 85% of the time. I mostly use pre ground beans, though I do have a bean grinder. I buy nice coffee and get through a bag fast though, and make sure it’s well sealed. If the coffee was likely to sit around a long time before use I’d probably grind my own more.

groundcontroltomontydon · 25/11/2018 11:31

Grinder plus espresso machine
Or grinder plus cafetiere
Or Aeropress (which isn't as good as a cafetiere but is more durable for travelling ... although there are more bits to lose)
Nespresso tastes weirdly fishy to me

IndigoSpritz · 25/11/2018 11:34

I very rarely drink coffee at home these days but when I do I use Lyons No.3 coffee bags; I buy these to take to the office. I still have my Morphy Richards Mister Cappucino machine at home if I decide to revert to 'home-made'.

DoodleLab · 25/11/2018 11:41

Feldgrind hand grinder
Aeropress
Aldi coffee beans

IcedPurple · 25/11/2018 11:44

In response to your question: Yes I most certainly do love coffee! It's one of the great simple joys in life. I look forward to my first cup the minute I open my eyes in the morning.

In response to the other part of your question, I use the Nespresso Creatista. Yes, I know it's not 'cool' to use Nespresso and I do sometimes feel bad at the environmental cost, but at the same time, I don't have a car - much much more damaging than a few empty capsules - and live a fairly environmentally friendly lifestyle, so I have decided to allow myself this one indulgence. I rarely use the 'genuine' Nespresso capsules. They are better, and I like them for a treat like at Christmas, but for everyday I use the Aldi pods (but not Lidl!) or the L'Or brand which is usually available on offer at Tesco.

BonnieF · 25/11/2018 11:51

I use a Krups grinder and an insulated stainless steel cafetière, which is far superior to glass ones. You do need to pre-heat the cafetière with boiling water for a couple of minutes if you want it too keep your coffee piping hot.

DGRossetti · 25/11/2018 11:53

Has milk frother though I don’t use that 85% of the time.

Tea lattes are divine ...

AdorableMisfit · 25/11/2018 11:55

I used to use a cafetiere but got tired of the faff of cleaning it. So now I use a plastic cone into which you put a paper filter and then pour hot water onto the coffee yourself. It's basically a percolator without the machine.

IWantToUseAnApostrophy · 25/11/2018 13:18

BloodyBridget and Sacrific (sorry for the spellingBlush) and others who use an aero press, how much coffee do you use? I and up with treacle!

sackrifice · 25/11/2018 13:25

others who use an aero press, how much coffee do you use? I end up with treacle!
Do it upside down.
I make two cups at a time, I set the aeropress at the '2' and add 2 tablespoons of coffee, then pour the water in off the boil, stirring as it goes in. Then pop the filter paper in the top and screw it on.

After brewing for a minute, or two at most, invert and squeeze into a mini jug. Then pour it into the final mug, add the frothy milk and enjoy.

Golden0ldie · 25/11/2018 13:45

I have a moka pot and either grind beans or buy ground if feeling lazy.

Please would some fellow moka pot users share with me how to make a really good latte? Atm I just have my coffee with a splash of cold milk or warm some milk in micro but it doesn’t resemble a proper latte!
