Do you love coffee?! What do you use at home?

I had a Nespresso machine for years and then the environmental guilt got too much. So it’s gone and I’ve been using ground coffee and a cafétière. So sad. Sad Haha! Obviously this is a first world problem! What do you use? A proper press? A bean to cup machine with in-built grinder? I miss having the crema layer and that proper smooth coffee taste!

I signed up for a free V60 offer with Pact which was fab and I used it until my card expired and then forgot to renew it. I still use it with supermarket coffee and it's nearly as fab.

I use an aeropress and I've just bought myself a rhinowares hand grinder. I grind between 13-15g of beans (depending on which coffee I'm using) and fill the whole chamber with hot water.
Using it "inverted" (upside down) is a game changer that I've just discovered. So much easier to use and the coffee gets a chance to brew better as it doesn't dribble through the filter before you plunge.

We have a bean to cup machine - it gets used several times a day.

I use a a de longhi bean to cup coffee machine. I love it. You cannot put ground beans in it.

Some you can - ours has a little hopper where you can put pre-ground coffee if you want.

That said, we've never used it.

TheMagician · 25/11/2018 16:09

I did that and it stopped working. I hoovered the ground beans out and it started working again thankfully.

It does say in the instructions that. U can add groynd beans to a different compartment but i will never chance it again!

Oatomatom · 25/11/2018 16:28

We have whole beans in the main bit and decaf ground coffee for the evening in the ground beans bit. Which works well for us.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/11/2018 16:37

I use a Krups burr grinder and a krups espresso pump. I only make espresso so I can have a latte though.

PlatypusPie · 25/11/2018 16:41

I use either a cafetière or my little Bialeti stove top and ready ground Waitrose Columbian. My DH bought himself an oversized ( and overpriced) Sage barista machine, that includes grinding, spent about two months making awful coffee and throwing lots away until DD1 who spent half a gap year as an actual barista showed him where he was going wrong ( over tamping). It’s still not as nice as the cup my little cafetière makes without any fuss at all - though his makes nice fluffy milk for those that want it ( drink mine black)

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 25/11/2018 16:49

cafetiere or bialetti stove-top.
DH's extensive commitment to the good coffee cause has revealed that the biggest difference is from freshly grinding the beans as often as you can be arsed.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 25/11/2018 16:53

We have a delonghi bean to cup machine, I get the big bags of beans from Costco.

I was dubious we’d use it when DH said he wanted one but it’s used several times a day and we rarely drink anything else now.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 25/11/2018 16:54

I do also have a large and small cafetière and a stove top espresso machine. Unfortunately I have limited coffee storage facilities!

Didsomeonesaybunny · 25/11/2018 17:03

Back home I’ve got an aeropress and a cafetière. My boyfriend has a Miele coffee maker (bean to cup) which was outrageously expensive but it makes such a lovely cup

BikeRunSki · 25/11/2018 17:08

I don’t drink coffee, but DH says that his Aeropress is the best thing I have ever given him.

stubbornstains · 25/11/2018 17:15

Stove top moka, it's so cheap (£12 ish) and simple, no waste, you just tap the used grounds out into the compost- no filter papers, nothing. It's what everybody in Italy uses at home - 'nuff said.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 25/11/2018 17:20

We've got a Dolce Gusto machine at home and at work. I know MN hates pod machines but I love them and have a shot of espresso into a hot soya or almond milk. I have a rule of 2 a day though else I get horrendous palpitations!

BakedBeans47 · 25/11/2018 17:21

Bean to cup machine

AlienBotanist · 25/11/2018 17:24

I would like to know what's the best for frothy milk (like the properly steam frothed milk they have I'm cafes) please?
I just love that stuff... Would drink it without any coffee Blush

BakedBeans47 · 25/11/2018 17:25

Sorry posted too soon. It’s a gaggia and takes a full bag of beans. I usually buy either Morrisons espresso beans or lavazza beans. Aldi ones are ok but they have less in the bag so don’t work out cheaper really

ThanksItHasPockets · 25/11/2018 17:44

Alien most Italians have a pump-action milk frother but I find that the milk scalds easily and it’s a PITA. The ideal is a steam arm on an espresso machine but as a stand-alone gadget the Nespresso Aeroccino is brilliant (and I say that as someone who doesn’t like Nespresso coffee). It will do warm milk with zero, some, or a lot of foam, and you can press the button and walk away to do something else while it does its thing. The only drawback is that you can’t adjust the temp and it won’t be hot enough if you like your milk extra hot. We use it pretty much daily for warm milk for the DC, too.

Moonflower12 · 25/11/2018 17:48

Illy espresso coffee - ready ground and a moko stove top. Then pour half a cup and add v hot but not boiling water. That way I get 2 cups from my little pot.

Moonflower12 · 25/11/2018 17:52

@Reallybadidea
Where did you get your reusable ness press pods from, please?
I could use mine again without guilt!

Moonflower12 · 25/11/2018 17:52

Nesspresso

tofupanda · 25/11/2018 17:57

Cafetière with ground coffee. Frothy milk with a Lavazza milk frother with a jug that goes in the dishwasher. Makes lovely creamy hot chocolate too.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/11/2018 18:09

Cheap grinder and aeropress. I buy beans from a little roastery near my office. I love the aeropress but have never got the hang of the inverted method.

I use 1 scoop of coffee and then usually let it brew for about 2 minutes before plunging.
