Yes or no? & where in the country are you?

No. But I won't last much longer. South East

@3out exactly the same here. It only properly kicked on this morning, must be very cold today!

I try not to put it on during the day while the kids are at school, my youngest is here with me but seems to be permanently on the move so doesn't feel the cold!

3out · 22/11/2018 07:28

The only problem is when the kids whack the thermostat with their feet when they’re doing headstands on the sofa. The house either ends up roasting or Baltic depending on the angle of the kick 😩😂

borntobequiet · 22/11/2018 07:28

No but my storage heaters are on, set at a high input and low output. The output can be turned up towards the end of the day to release the remaining stored heat.
Storage heaters are not the best, but are OK if correctly set and are good if one is at home all day. They will always need supplementing with another heat source in the evening if it’s cold. They don’t break down, like many boilers I have had, at the first sign of frost.

Ragwort · 22/11/2018 07:34

Yes, has been on since Half Term, and I am now sitting in front of the (fake gas) fire having breakfast with Christmas radio on Grin, lovely.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 22/11/2018 07:38

Why wouldn't you have the heating on?? It's the end of November!!

Ours is set to a thermostat at 20c during the day. If it drops below 20c the heat clicks on, whether it's July or January.

Meet0nTheIedge · 22/11/2018 07:46

Yes, we have it at 19C all evening and for a couple of hours in the morning and it's been kicking in for about a month. Boost it during the day if anyone's at home. The house gets down to about 14C during the day in cold weather which is pretty chilly.

Gardai · 22/11/2018 07:46

@Piper the reason is - this is a competitive ‘I’ve not put the heating on’ thread. I got stuck in the bath as it turned to ice and dh had to carefully pick axe me out...you lot are wusses.
My heat will never go on, perhaps for 3 minutes at Christmas as I don’t want to appear unkind or mean.
Do I win ?

PiperPublickOccurrences · 22/11/2018 07:50

Fuck that for a game of soldiers. Being cold is miserable. We're having work done on the central heating today and as I work from home I may have to spend the day under the duvet to keep warm. It's currently 1c in Glasgow.

My parents are a bit like this though - as if it's virtuous to not use your heating.

LEMtheoriginal · 22/11/2018 07:50

Yeah and our log burner - cosy

Fascinated by mumsnet obsession with braving out the cold when one doesn't have to! There are people who genuinely cannot afford to heat their homes Sad

PinkCalluna · 22/11/2018 07:52

Same as all the other Scots, it never goes off. The thermostat kicks in if the temperature drops regardless of the date on the calendar.

A number of years ago I went to visit the home of a friend who’d recently moved from
England and she was so cold she was sitting on the sofa in her coat and gloves.

I asked if her heating was broken and she said “no but it’s April, we switch it off in March”

I pointed out to her that she was now in Scotland, there were 4inches of snow on the ground and if she didn’t switch her heating on her pipes would all freeze.

The idea that you decide when to use you heating when it’s cold was a revelation to her. Grin

Wilma55 · 22/11/2018 07:54

Boiler packed up this morning so heating not on. Engineer coming tomorrow. ...

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 22/11/2018 07:54

Ours has been on for a couple of weeks now

SinglePringle · 22/11/2018 07:56

But I genuinely haven’t felt cold at home yet Confused.

Granted, I leave home at 6.30am and get home at 9pm so I tend to head to bed not long after getting in, but it hasn’t felt cold in my house.

Gardai · 22/11/2018 08:04

Surely everyone's tolerance towards heat is different as is the size of their house, insulation, design and upbringing. I was brought up in a very cold house and I have always lived in freezing houses.
As I’m older I like the warmth and I need it and I’m prepared to make sacrifices in other areas to pay for the heat. My house is old, not insulated and fecking cold otherwise.

Nenic · 22/11/2018 08:16

Of course. I refuse to sit in my home with 10 layers on

Jenala · 22/11/2018 08:19

I have mine set to on for 30 seconds Christmas eve and 90 seconds both Christmas morning and Christmas evening, we have guests so kind of have to. Only set thermostat at 16c though so it doesn't get too boiling. I just wear my shoes indoors to keep warm the rest of the time. It's snowing right now but my Victorian house with single glazed windows just isn't cold

TitzillatheHun · 22/11/2018 08:29

It's minus 1 here (Herefordshire) this morning so the heating is very much ON. It's on a thermostat but I might drop the temp a little or turn one of the radiators down, the sitting room got a bit toasty last night.

TillyVonMilly · 22/11/2018 08:31

Stove has been lit every evening since the end of September and we’ve had the heating on some mornings and evenings too, depending on how cold it is. Yesterday there was snow on the hills and last niyit was -2, West Yorkshire

safariboot · 22/11/2018 08:55

My oldest daughter never needs the heating on in her triple glazed cozy flat envy it just magically stays warm

By mooching off the neighbours' heat, probably.

Branleuse · 22/11/2018 08:59

Are you kidding me?

Im in the south east and its been 4 degrees during the day the last week, and down to maybe 1 degree at night.

Do you live in some magically insulated thermal underground house?

My heating has been on and off as necessary for about 6 weeks, and its coming on more and more now as this week is bloody brass monkeys.

Admittedly I do live in an old single glazed draughty house, that is rented, so not much i can do, except keep curtains closed and keep the heating on

Vagndidit · 22/11/2018 09:08

I will never understand the martyrdom that exists regarding using heat. It IS bloody cold this week. And I say that as someone who grew up in a country with much colder winters. Our homes are much better insulated than in the UK and even we would find it cold enough to pop the heat on. If it's not on during a week like this, then WHEN would you ever use it??

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 22/11/2018 09:15

Yes, the system is set to 18°, it comes on for an hour in the morning and for a few hours in the evening, it was 12° in the house yesterday (I had been on nights so home). I tend not to put it on until evening but I have an open fire in the living room which I do light when I am home in the day time and it is cold.

SinglePringle · 22/11/2018 09:34

Safari, what?! I doubt she’s hacked into their supply! You think she should put her heating on even if she’s not cold? Way to go, global warming!

Genuinely stumped by the attitude she’s ‘mooching’ off someone.

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/11/2018 09:36

mooching 😂 it just doesn’t come on because temperatures never get low enough inside

Willow2017 · 22/11/2018 09:38

Hell yes. Off and on for last 2 weeks.
We have had freezing wind and rain for days now. Its been baltic here. Had heating on all night once this week it was so cold.
