Tinsel has been relegated to the tops of the pictures and the clock. No matchy tree here, though. Every colour of red, green, gold and silver with no two baubles the same. I like beads, though.
My arsehole can look after itself!

Love tinsel but we have a pair of almost 8 month old kittens so it's baubles only this year (attached with fuse wire)!

MrsRyanGosling15 · 22/11/2018 12:36

No, never! To me you would only ever see tinsle on a tree that have coloured lights and was decorated by kids for the playroom where no one ever seen it. I find it a bit tacky. Although we don't use tinsle on the playroom tree, just more colourful decorations and things the dc have made.

BakedBeans47 · 22/11/2018 12:38

Yes I love tinsel

ClarabellaCTL · 22/11/2018 12:40

Nah, I don't like it. I think it's a bit dated. I like baubles and lights only (and strings of beads)

CammieKennaway · 22/11/2018 12:47

I love tinsel - it reminds me of the Christmasses I had as a child where the tree practically looked like a unicorn's hangover.
Having said that though, I also love my usual themed tree with it's soft white lights and matching decorations so because we couldn't decide this year and we have a spare old tree up in the loft, we're being OTT and having two trees - our usual colour co-ordinated tree but then for the kids we're having a "retro" tree with traditional multi-coloured lights, lots of different decorations of different styles and colours and tinsel - oh and that lametta stuff that you hang in tinsel strands to make it even more of a glitter fest. Some will think it's tacky but that's the point - Christmas is the 80s was about loads of different colours and tacky fun :)
We'll be reusing all of decorations again and have bought most of them second-hand so we've tried to be ethical about waste too, especially plastics.

AnnPerkins · 22/11/2018 13:13

Yes. I like it shoved into the middle of the tree so it doesn't look very tinselly but creates a lush, glowy effect. We have multi-coloured lights because DS has surprisingly strong views on white ones.

DH tried to do a matchy matchy tree last year, using only about a quarter of our bauble stash. As soon as he went out I got the rest of the decs from the loft and shoved everything on the tree - random baubles, old homemade crap, weird clip-on glittery butterflies that DS had chosen when he was a toddler - the lot. It looked like Woolworths had thrown up on it and truly was a thing of beauty.

decorating tree

  1. Put on all the red decorations - it looks lovely and scandinavian
2.Put on all the gold decorations - it looks like a victorian scene from dickens
  1. put on all the other decorations - its beginning to look a bit messy
  2. add ropes and rennents of elderly partly bald tinsel in many clashing colours - it is the perfect magical joyous christmas
  3. the taste police come and mysterioulsly half t decorations and all the lovely tinsel has disapeered. Sulk.
Ecofluffynanny · 22/11/2018 13:26

@littlemisscomper I lived in Germany for 10 years and all of my beautiful Christmas decorations are German ♥️ (apart from the ones my DC 'lovingly' made during their primary school years, which still have their little name tags on and take pride of place...even though they are now 26 and 29 😂😂).

Cambalamb · 22/11/2018 15:19

No and definitely not until 2 weeks before Christmas Day.

Cambalamb · 22/11/2018 15:22

I do like lametta though.

oldwhyno · 22/11/2018 16:06

hell yes! Tinsel plays a crucial role in reflecting light from the tree lights, to give the tree a proper glow. it's like a static disco ball for your tree!

starkid · 22/11/2018 17:05

I like it, it's fun, the more tacky decorations in every colour possible the better! But then I don't go for naice aesthetics with my tree!

The little strings of silver/gold bells or the very thin tinsel you can get is perhaps less tacky, but still fun.

starkid · 22/11/2018 17:07

My DH has nothing to do with our tree and loudly tells all visitors he took no part in it as I've got bad taste Grin

MoaningSickness · 22/11/2018 20:08

I always had no tinsel on the tree and lametta to make it sparkle growing up, so that's what I want now. DH feels a tree is bare without tinsel.

Thanks to this thread I might go with 'tinsel but shoved in the middle of the tree' this year to see if it's a compromise we can both live with!

Flamingosrule · 23/11/2018 22:58

Absolutely not in our house 😂 but each to their own!

I remember my dad bringing down the Christmas decorations out of the loft every year when we were kids ... I always remember the tinsel in particular smelt dusty and terribly fucking rank! And the smell on your hands afterwards was just bleurgh!
I totally get people saying they put it on and it reflects the lights etc but personally, I just cannot handle the stuff..gives me the eeby jeebies! But then I can’t handle cling film either so I probably am just odd 😂 x
