Have you ever gone off a celebrity because of something they've done?

I used to really like Ewan McGregor until he had an affair.

Same with Robson Green in the 90s.

I loved Michael Moriarty (still do) but he's become a huge loony and an old soak.

Liked Ant McPartlin before the drink driving and infidelity.

Have you ever liked a celeb and then gone off them because of something they've said or done? Does it just prove that celebs are human like the rest of us?

There's a whole amazing chapter in one of the Alan Partridge books about Edmonds being his ultimate nemesis. I'm chuckling just thinking about it.

Patroclus · 02/12/2018 13:50

haha yes I think I read an article about Alan's Edmonds hatred. Peas in a pod.

Patroclus · 02/12/2018 13:51

“Alan Partridge!” I announced, shaking his hand quickly and well.''

longwayoff · 03/12/2018 08:03

Thank you patroclus, excellent start to a Monday. I've heard Steve Coogan's been responsible for all kinds of reprehensible behaviour but he's so immensely clever and talented I just admire him. Still, when even Courtney Love says he's too much to cope with . . .

beanaseireann · 03/12/2018 19:52

Because he helped make and acted in the film Philomena starring Judi Dench which shone a light on the dreadful happenings in Irish Mother and Baby homes I give Steve Coogan a bit of leeway. But only a tiny bit.

Patroclus · 05/12/2018 06:00

He had a reputation as a complete madman in the 90s. But his brother was a part of the whole Madchester thing I suppose. I loved the Trip

The film was his idea, he was producer & co-wrote the screenplay (it got Best Screenplay at Venice) - that’s quite a big bit of “help” Grin

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/entertainment-arts-24551741/steve-coogan-philomena-story-moved-me

True that he can be very arsey & has some issues (but then which of us doesn’t? I know I do!) but he’s definitely basically sound.

PawneeParksDept · 08/12/2018 14:21

I remember reading an article about Steve Coogan in the Mail that was so horrifying I expected him to sue.

He didn't but then he spoke about it at the Leveson inquiry and I was just even more disgusted, with the Press not him

The article explicitly blamed him for the actor Owen Wilson's suicide attempt

But when Coogan DID try to sue he discovered that, as part of the suit, the real reason for the suicide attempt would have to be disclosed, which was, probably the intended goal of the paper and the price they were willing to pay to find out and Coogan was unwilling to put Wilson through that.

He was visibly upset at the Leveson

The Daily Mail there, just when you think they can't sink any lower, they do.

ThatLibraryMiss · 08/12/2018 15:03

Paul Simon, for me, because every time he says something about Art Garfunkel it seems to be deliberately hurtful. I get that they don't like each other but when you're speaking in public you suck it up and try to appear professional, right?

There are many instances. Here's one: when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Garfunkel called Simon "the person who most enriched my life by putting those songs through me". Simon, classy as ever, responded, "Arthur and I agree about almost nothing. But it's true, I have enriched his life quite a bit."

I understand that Art Garfunkel is an odd character and I'm sure there's a good deal of six and two threes in the breakup of their friendship but FFS, Paul, if you can't say anything nice when the camera's on you, don't say anything at all.

beanaseireann · 08/12/2018 15:30

GiantKitten because he was so involved
That's why I give Steve Coogan a bit of leeway.
I just so wish that film had won an Oscar to give the publicity to brave women like Philomena. It was a great movie and so funny at times. Judi Dench was brilliant. Her Mum's from Dublin.

bringbacksideburns · 08/12/2018 15:50

Morrissey - for turning out to be a racist self absorbed fuckwit who completely sold out.

Billy Connolly - the minute he made those comments about the hostage Ken Bigley.

David Beckham - when his emails revealed exactly what he's really like.

Gary Lineker - when I read on here about how horrible he is.

Anna Friel - there was always something about her I didn't like but have it on good authority she's only nice to the people at the top who can help her career - rude and horrible to the ' little people'. I always think that's a good indication of your character.

Mark Owen - when I found out he was a massive shagger.

Jimmy Page - for having sex with 13/ 14 year olds. Don't care how famous he was or how 'keen' they may have been. He was a grown man and they were kids.

longwayoff · 09/12/2018 07:22

Lineker is horrible? Ok. Adding to my ever growing list.

Poster65 · 09/12/2018 19:01

Lady Gaga was a superior arse to Jodie Whittaker on The GN Show. Put me right off her

She seemed really lost that night, almost like everyone was in on some joke she didn't know about. She's actually very sweet.

R Kelly for me, some really awful shit hes gotten away with

Graphista · 15/12/2018 02:08

Not been back to thread for a while.

Just recently learned of Craig maclachlans shifty behaviour on dr Blakes mysteries set such that he's been basically sacked.

And now Michael weatherly! Ugh! I've enjoyed watching him in various roles for years and had really been enjoying bull but for the love of God the film/tv industry need to get a serious grip on the behaviour of their workers! So so disappointing!

MsLToe · 15/12/2018 02:12

Yes, this very night as it happens! Watching Russell Howard and generally think he’s ace but he said a couple of things in his 13th December Sky show about PETA and he dissed a pigeon (look, I know how that sounds, OK?!) and it was the combination of both that made it seem he didn’t give a shit about animals, and I care deeply.

Given we don’t actually know these people it can be something that simple that puts you off.

PrickWhittington · 15/12/2018 02:25

Yes - Rolf Harris - I liked him a lot when I was younger, found it really shocking what he did. Also:

John Leslie - another obvious one.
Frankie Boyle (after what he said about Katie Price's son Angry
Johnny Depp (that one hurt- loved him before it became so obvious he is a complete wanker)
Philip Schofield- as above

Another one who knows they should possibly hate Steve Coogan but can't - he is just so funny and so talented, plus I think it has always been obvious he is a complete cunt as well, so I'm not shocked by it.

Not really relevant to the thread as I have never liked him, but can I just say that Cliff Richard is a complete wanker too, as it feels good to get it out.

Terfing · 15/12/2018 09:09

Oh, yes! R Kelly! What an awful man. I really hope he gets his comeuppance.

kenandbarbie · 15/12/2018 12:10

What did Philip schofield do?

catmon · 15/12/2018 12:18

Another 1 here needing to know what did Schofield do ???? ShockShock

SilkenTofu · 15/12/2018 12:25

I go off celebs when they get political. I really do not want to hear what they have to say. Martin Freeman, JK Rowling both massively do my head in.

Nousernameforme · 15/12/2018 12:31

Jason Momoa I followed him on Instagram for a bit and he looked like a bit of a dick either playing guitars or riding motorbikes a bit too try hardy ooo look at me and how cool I am.
The final nail in that coffin though was the incident where he ripped up his co stars books for lol's as she was reading rather than paying attention to him during her down time.

Ellen I saw a thing once where a girl who could do loads of back flips came on her show and fluffed it. The poor mortified girl was just hurried off with ellen looking pissed off no sympathy at all. It didn't fit with the kind and caring face she puts on.

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 15/12/2018 13:38

Elvis, cuz...where to start???

PrickWhittington · 15/12/2018 16:46

Oh Sorry - Phillip Schofield - he's not 'done' anything big as such I'm aware of, I meant as in it became obvious to me that he's a complete wanker - arrogant, full of himself and I don't like the superior manner he assumes when talking to many of his guests (Kim Woodburn for one). He's often the topic of not too flattering celebrity blinds too, and I'm inclined to believe them.

Agree too with Elvis - these days he'd be labelled as a rapist and a paedophile at best.

Oblomov18 · 15/12/2018 17:02

Most celebrities I go off quickly. They normally do something stupid or are so full of themselves that I like them, and then, just don't.

Aragog · 15/12/2018 17:11

Jessica Ennis. Someone I know went to the same gym as her and said she was rude, obnoxious and nothing like she comes across on tv.

We've seen a few times at the EIS gym/facility. We even saw her training near the track during DD's sports day one year. She was always lovely - happy to say hello and acknowledge people, she even offered to hand up the sports day trophies.

Her child goes to the same school as some of our friends. Apparently she is lovely at the school gates, etc.

I did hear rumours of people saying she was less so whilst she was a school child herself, but that is many years ago now.
