...yuk! Of course it could have just been the brand , but I feel sorry for anyone who has to eat a gluten free diet if that was typical. Also it was bloody expensive! £3.15 vs my normal version which is a quid! I’m going to write to the Daily Mail to complain!

Pizza express they're the same price.

But significantly smaller. Sad

Oh I didn’t know the pizza express ones were smaller. I will expand my campaign to include them as well then. They’re a coeliac U.K. recommended/affiliated restaurant. Shame on them.

Dd had a nice gf meal at Wagamama the other night which I don’t think cost more though I admit I didn’t check.

grumiosmum · 16/11/2018 08:27

It is more expensive (difficult) to produce GF equivalents of common wheat-based foods, and demand is lower, hence the higher prices. Basic economics. It sucks, but that's the reason.

The best place to buy decent tasting GF stuff is M&S. Eating out, you are much safer in the chain restaurants which invest in developing products & training staff properly to avoid cross-contamination. Pizza/Italian chains are normally reliable.

The pizzas may seem smaller because they can only produce a GF base in one size, and it has to be delivered to the shop wrapped to avoid cross contamination.

Being coeliac is tough - but it's way better now than it used to be because the 'fad' for GF food has increased demand and therefore availability of alternatives.

wrenika · 16/11/2018 13:25

I have coeliac disease and I can never seem to find GF sandwiches. Believe me, if you're desperate for a snack and you have forgotten to pre-plan, it's any port in a storm! I've forgotten what normal bread tastes like though.
Promise bakery are my favourite for GF bread products.

Honestly, the 'bad' bread is nothing compared to the agony of getting caught out with gluten. I don't even think twice about the downsides of the gluten free diet because gluten is very much the enemy. The pain of cramps from accidentally ingesting a few crumbs of gluten is absolutely horrendous. It's the worst pain I have ever felt and there have been times I have had to ask my poor DP to knock on the bathroom door every 5 minutes to ensure I haven't fainted!

soulrider · 16/11/2018 18:52

Pizza express are more or less the same size, and if you order one of the speciality pizzas, e.g. a romana on a gf base they do take some money off. The difference for dominos is much more infuriating - especially when they do the offers on the medium or large pizzas only when gf only come in small

TatianaLarina · 17/11/2018 09:42

I eat home-made pizzas with a buckwheat base. Much nicer than ordinary pizza. I’ve never liked Pizza Express or Hut anyway.

Cineraria · 17/11/2018 12:28

Oh a buckwheat base sounds interesting; we like the flavour of buckwheat pancakes. Are you able to recommend a particular recipe for that? Also, does it go crisp or is it more of a soft, fluffy base? So far we have been using the Isabel's gluten free pizza base mix which is lovely but not always easy to get at a reasonable price unless we buy in bulk.

ProfessorMoody · 17/11/2018 12:32

Did someone actually go to the time and effort of googling a Boots cheese sandwich and posting the perfectly normal ingredients here in order to be a GF?

Fuck me, people have time on their hands Grin

constantnamefails · 17/11/2018 13:01

I make a nice gluten free bread.

constantnamefails · 17/11/2018 13:04

You can make nice dough using potatoes too. I'll post the recipe if anyone is interested. Potato gives it that fluffiness that gluten free bread misses.

NicoAndTheNiners · 17/11/2018 15:58

Yes please for all and any GF recipes for dough, bread, pizza bases, etc.

mumsastudent · 17/11/2018 18:12

the only time I tried to make gf bread even the birds refused it :) ps Home brands sometimes stock small (250gm) loaves of pan rustico they are long life packages & lactose free - they actually taste really nice as a sandwich - the slices are small I think they are about £2ish not cheap but nice for a treat taste even better than genius & they don't fall apart

MrsGrindah · 18/11/2018 12:42

@[ProfessorMoody] Interesting that GF means both gluten free and goady fucker!

Some coeliacs don't experience obvious symptoms when they ingest gluten. Why it took us years to diagnose DS.

But the damage is still done to the gut every time gluten is consumed.
