...yuk! Of course it could have just been the brand , but I feel sorry for anyone who has to eat a gluten free diet if that was typical. Also it was bloody expensive! £3.15 vs my normal version which is a quid! I’m going to write to the Daily Mail to complain!

Bfree gf stone ground pitta breads are really good. And yes Warburtons gf bread is brilliant. Especially the round unsliced loaf. It was so good I had to stop buying it! And the crumpets. I can also recommend Schar bread. It’s as light as a feather unlike most gf alternatives.
I can’t recommend ready made gf sandwiches though as they are all leaden.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 21:21

Waitrose egg mayo gf sandwich is pretty damn good, and only 20p more than the non gf one.

mumsastudent · 14/11/2018 21:26

Oh Waitrose use to do prawn mayonnaise I use to like

Suburban ummm that’s bread, cheese & soft cheese. What’s your point? Yes the bread has lots of ingredients but similar to any sliced bread

Aside from all the shit and E numbers, the second biggest ingredient is water.

Maybe that’s normal for shop-bought sandwiches - I don’t buy them, so I’m shocked.

Caprisunorange · 14/11/2018 21:47

The water is in the bread. It’s a standard ingredient in bread Grin and the E numbers are vegetable oil and an emulsifier to crust up the bread.

Caprisunorange · 14/11/2018 21:48

Are you really shocked that bread is made with water? You’re painting yourself as such a home baker/ cook too

BarbaraofSevillle · 14/11/2018 21:51

I made bread the other day with 400g flour, 260 g water, yeast, oil and salt, so not sure what your point is other than you have no idea how to make bread.

TheBitterBoy · 14/11/2018 21:54

I've accidentally bought a gluten free egg salad sandwich from Sainsbury's and actually it was okay - the only giveaway was the bread was a bit more crumbly than the average packet sarnie.

I agree, the schar range is decent. MIL is gluten intolerant and I keep a bag of their frozen part bake rolls in for her, they are the closest to real bread we've found.

IwantaHippopotamusForChristmas · 14/11/2018 21:57

I did this. Late shift at work.. grabbed from the reduced side a nice big malty looking filled roll. Gluten free? Oh let’s try this. I couldn’t figure out why half of it kept missing my mouth.. crumbly sawdust bread.
Like a burst couch 🤮

Worieddd · 14/11/2018 21:59

Sorry to ask a really stupid question but what happens to you gluten intolerant folk if you eat gluten? I have just realised after reading this thread that I really don’t know anything about it!

SuburbanRhonda · 14/11/2018 21:59

Are you really shocked that bread is made with water?

No I’m shocked that the second biggest ingredient in a sandwich is water.

Never made bread in my life!

Caprisunorange · 14/11/2018 22:00

Don’t you understand it though? The ingredients you’re referring relate to the ingredients used to make the bread. Of which there are 2 slices in the sandwich. And some cheese between them

SuburbanRhonda · 14/11/2018 22:02

Why so rude?

Yes, I understand that the ingredients are in the bread.

Still, it’s given a few people something to froth about this evening, for which you are very welcome Smile

chemenger · 14/11/2018 22:03

Water is the second biggest ingredient in the bread, not in the whole sandwich.

Caprisunorange · 14/11/2018 22:04

But your post is wrong. You’ve made a bug thing about the sandwich being full of crap ingredients, because you don’t know how bread is made.

I’m not frothing, I’m bemused and cringing a little.

UterusUterusGhali · 14/11/2018 22:04

worried there was a really distressing/moving post a while ago from someone allergic to gluten who had accidentally ingested a crumb. There were biohazard suits involved. Months off work. I can't remember the poster or title but it was very eye-opening.

I cut out gluten totally a few years ago to try to get to the bottom of severe stomach problems. Toasted, bread was just about tolerable, but never in a sarnie! It was a month of jacket spuds. :(

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/11/2018 22:05

No I’m shocked that the second biggest ingredient in a sandwich is water.

That’s because sandwiches are made with bread though. Water is a fairly signidficant ingredient in any bread. Shop brought or home made.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/11/2018 22:05

Cringing? Really?

Good grief.

DamsonWhine · 14/11/2018 22:08

We are lucky in many respects because DS was diagnosed at 4 and has already basically forgotten what real bread is like.

I’m more bothered about the total lack of variety, massive amounts of sugar and ubiquitous chocolate brownie in gluten free food.

elephantoverthehill · 14/11/2018 22:09

Twiglet I have had the same experience, when pregnant I could eat gluten. Weird hey? I thought it was just me. Grin
Worieddd to be graphic; pale poos, stinky farts, not quite knowing if you are going to fart or the other, poos that float and won't flush, bloating and now a new one vomiting. One of my sister's gets an awful rash too, the other who is 100% coeliac reckons the faster she eats 'cheats' the quicker it goes through and the less of a reaction Hmm

ANiceLentilHotpot · 14/11/2018 22:11

Where are you all accidentally buying gluten free sandwiches from? I'm coeliac and can never seem to find a ready made GF sandwich (despite M&S, etc saying they do them).

You're right though, GF bread is rubbish.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 22:14

I’ve bought the gf egg mayo in error a couple of times as the packages are almost identical and I’m usually in a rush. It tastes ok to me,

FekkoThePenguin · 14/11/2018 22:15

I bought mine on purpose in waitrose.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 22:17

Worieddd coeliac disease is an auto immune disease which means if you eat gluten your body starts to attack itself. I'm the long term the inside of your intestines get damaged so you can no longer absorb nutrients from food and become malnourished and also have higher risk of bowel cancer. In the short term if I accidentally eat gluten I vomit a lot and feel exhausted for a few days. Other people get very bad diarrhoea.
