Accidentally bought a gluten free sandwich today....

...yuk! Of course it could have just been the brand , but I feel sorry for anyone who has to eat a gluten free diet if that was typical. Also it was bloody expensive! £3.15 vs my normal version which is a quid! I’m going to write to the Daily Mail to complain!

Crispyes and I’m thinking of saying “ something should be done about this”

SuburbanI said “my normal” ie my usual choice of cheese sandwich..which is available from Boots for £1 ...not sure why people are shocked about this?

I definitely don't recommend gluten free crumpets. They are blinking awful.

Nanasueathome · 14/11/2018 20:53

I bought a gluten free carrot cake from M&S by mistake
I emailed them about the fact that I had never knowingly eaten sawdust but the cake I bought was exactly how I would imagine sawdust would taste
The did say they would take the comment on board but I really feel the pain of the people who are genuinely gluten free and the rubbish they have to eat

By the way I’m not claiming my £1 sarnie is fantastic...I’m just saying I was taken aback by how poor the GF version was for triple the price and feel sorry for gluten intolerant people who, need to grab lunch on the go like many of us do

I did this and bought a Boots GF ploughmans by accident....it was THE worst thing I'd ever eaten!

Cachailleacha · 14/11/2018 20:56

I think I'd just stick to rice and quinoa if I couldn't have gluten, the gluten free stuff is awful.

MarSeeAh · 14/11/2018 20:57

We had gluten-free bread, for the first time, at Communion recently. One of the people who clears everything away afterwards usually puts the left over bread out for the birds to eat. They didn't eat the gluten-free bread!

lazymare · 14/11/2018 20:57

Meh. You get used to it.

Branleuse · 14/11/2018 20:58

I had a period where i became mildly gluten intolerant so gave it up for a few months.
It just wasnt worth eating bread at all

makingtime · 14/11/2018 20:59

*Here’s the list of ingredients in your £1 cheese sandwich, OP:

Oatmeal Bread (Fortified Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Water, Oatmeal, Wheat Bran, Yeast, Salt, Wheat Protein, Spirit Vinegar, Emulsifiers (E471, E472(e)), Vegetable Oils (Rapeseed, Palm), Malted Barley Flour, Flour Treatment Agent (Ascorbic Acid)), Cheddar Cheese (Milk) (28%), Reduced Fat Soft Cheese (Milk) (5%).

Yum!*

Confused What's wrong with this? That's just bread, cheese and spread! For a quid that looks pretty good to me

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 14/11/2018 21:00

I don't understand why gf bread is awful.
It is the gluten that gives it strength and elasticity. The food is improving but bread is really hard to make gluten free. Either moist food (cake) or dry food (crackers) are better. I just avoid it.

Caprisunorange · 14/11/2018 21:00

I’m also confused about the listing out of standard ingredients with sarky yum. They’re perfectly standard, take your tin hat off and have a proper look

JassyRadlett · 14/11/2018 21:02

My mum is coeliac and she won’t touch GF bread if it isn’t toasted. And very rarely then.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 21:02

I find the warburtons gf crumpets are really good as well. I use them to make mini pizza based too. Just top with tomato pizza sauce and then cheese

B1rdinthebush · 14/11/2018 21:04

I've been diagnosed with Coeliac disease for just under a year and it took me a while to get used to GF bread. M&S are the best but I'm also lucky to have a great GF bakery not too far away.

It's quite easy to say how awful GF sandwiches are but it's a godsend to be able to grab something on the go. Boots are a bit rubbish but M&S and Asda do fairly decent ones. The price is because of the GF environment they need to be produced in.

RadicalFern · 14/11/2018 21:06

Schär make some lovely GF bread things - ones that actually taste nice and don’t have a weird texture.

For home baking, try adding an extra egg or two to the mix, as gluten free flour is usually 1. Thirsty and will do well with extra moisture 2. Lacking in protein so doesn;t rise as well. The eggs help with both of these. Or you can stick to fruitcake and delicious almond and polenta cakes.

TwllBach · 14/11/2018 21:08

DS (2.5) is gluten intolerant and I feel SO BAD that he will never experience the beauty of real bread. GF bread is shite at the best of times and not even he will eat it unless toasted. In one of my local cafes there’s an extra 50p charge for the privilege as well

There are good things coming through - lots of places do decent cake these days!!

twiglet · 14/11/2018 21:10

I've been gluten intolerant for 5 years (medically diagnosed before someone comes out with the why are you faddy comment) and gave up on bread it tastes like sawdust and £3+ for a small loaf! I tend to grab a salad instead but eating on the go is difficult.

About the only thing I'm loving about being pregnant is my ability to eat gluten at the moment. I found it bizarre at first, something to do with the amount of antibodies you produce when pregnant is suppressing my reaction, really hoping it stays but got a feeling it won't!

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 21:10

Gf carrot cake is generally really good.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 14/11/2018 21:11

As a coeliac, I’m feeling strangely validated reading this thread 😁

halfwitpicker · 14/11/2018 21:12

Can't believe the op is getting flack for a random cheap cheese sarnie

Only on MN Grin

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 14/11/2018 21:12

I have to say though, I’ve been gluten free for so long now, I’ve forgotten what proper bread tastes like 🤔

mumsastudent · 14/11/2018 21:14

nope my 2 favourites are brown Genius or there was a Schar seeded brown (this is sweeter than others I have had but even more expensive than (Genius) these dont tend to fall apart - what I find is that you need a "wet" filling ie egg mayonnaise - or use coleslaw with salad - the crusts tend to be dry though. toast is ok.

notacooldad · 14/11/2018 21:17

Is it actually possible to buy a ready-made sandwich for £1?
Yes. Our local butty shop has egg and cress or cheese and tomato starting at 0.79p
They are pretty decent.

MrsGrindah · 14/11/2018 21:17

Also, I think they were cheeky fuckers re the filling... kind of “ they should be so grateful we’ve made it with GF bread they won’t notice the crap filling “.....and we can charge them £3.15
