Accidentally bought a gluten free sandwich today....

...yuk! Of course it could have just been the brand , but I feel sorry for anyone who has to eat a gluten free diet if that was typical. Also it was bloody expensive! £3.15 vs my normal version which is a quid! I’m going to write to the Daily Mail to complain!

Only £1 for a sandwichShock I hope you wouldnt consider feeding such a thing to your children or even adding one to their lunchbox. What next? Fizzy drink?

lazymare · 15/11/2018 09:32

The Burgen seeded gf loaf is lovely and so is the Schar Vitality one.

lazymare · 15/11/2018 09:37

Wheat Free Bakery does a really nice seeded loaf too.

Can't believe the op is getting flack for a random cheap cheese sarnie

I know. Most shops, even more expensive ones like Waitrose or M&S sell a range of basic, plain sandwiches like ham, cheese, egg for £1/£1.50.

The quality of ingredients is probably not that different to more expensive sandwiches, what you don't get will be the fancier ingredients, salad and trimmings.

Ready made sandwiches are probably one of the poorest value, and hence most profitable, things you can buy, so plenty of margin for a basic sandwich to be sold for £1 and still make money, because it costs much less than that to make at home and obviously even cheaper to make on an industrial scale when you pay less for ingredients than they are sold for in supermarkets.

exorcisingarrrgggghti · 15/11/2018 09:42

Workers. I don't have caeliacs disease but since I've gone gluten free I've not needed any asthma medication and very little medication for IBS so I reckon I'm intolerant to it! I agree that gf bread is rubbish though!

indyandlara · 15/11/2018 09:46

If you think that’s bad, try £3 for 2 gf sausage rolls in M&S! They’re the only ones my coeliac 9 year old will eat as the others are ‘minging’ apparently. Daylight robbery! She likes Genius and Schar bread but as toastier. Never bother with sandwiches as they are too dry.

longwayoff · 15/11/2018 10:19

People, its possible to get used to rice cakes. Honestly. But you always miss bread I think

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/11/2018 10:26

That's probably the answer - instead of putting up with nasty gluten free bread, just give up flour based products entirely and eat foods that are naturally gluten free where possible. Rice cakes, almond flour, cauliflower pizza, salads with rice or gluten free grains instead of pasta ones etc.

TatianaLarina · 15/11/2018 10:28

I’m not coeliac but wheat makes me itchy and bloated so I don’t eat it.

I’ve never liked bread so I don’t miss it. But I don’t like rice cakes either.

I eat and recommend Orgran buckwheat crackers, Nairn’s oatcakes, corn crackers, Easy Bean chickpea crispbread.

I also recommend Heart of Nature bread from Waitrose which is really good. And Biona buckwheat or millet bread which is a little like a lighter kind of rye bread, without the gluten.

longwayoff · 15/11/2018 12:07

If you're not coeliac but have a wheat intolerance like me, I'm able to eat a slice of Vogels Sunflower and Chia or Crosta &Mollica Pane Pugliese. I dont know why but an occasional slice of either, toasted, is problem free for me. Sold by Sainsburys and Waitrose.

Rochelaise18 · 15/11/2018 13:08

Most gluten free bread can be a bit rubbish. I never buy the sandwiches because of how much more they generally cost. It's also an eye opener as to how many products you would think don't contain gluten actually do when you get the diagnosis. I still miss Lindt milk chocolate.

mumsastudent · 15/11/2018 15:12

I buy some of those mini salads instead of sandwiches or pack of oatmeal biscuits (great that they come in packs of 5) and some cheese or some mixed nuts & fruit & a yogurt

TatianaLarina · 15/11/2018 15:34

So do I. Pret do a great

hennaoj · 15/11/2018 16:20

Worieddd I'm a coeliac, if I eat gluten I can get diaroah for nearly a week. It actually leads the villi in a coeliacs stomach being attacked and eaten away by their immune system. It can take 3 months for them to fully recover. One time I was very, very ill when glutened, I got the sweats, shakes and shivers.

The bread is much better than it used to be, I like the M&S gf sandwiches best of all. To me they are a treat! The M&S lemon cake is lovely and moist.

ArsenicNLace · 15/11/2018 16:51

I had a Vegan pizza yesterday. Big mistake. Not sure what Vegan cheese is made of but it has no business being on pizza.

It looked like candle wax had been dripped on the pizza because it clearly doesn't melt. Frankly it tasted like melted wax too!! Never again!

Elfinablender · 15/11/2018 16:57

My ds has only recently been diagnosed with coeliacs. Thankfully the pasta does a better job of passing than the bread. So far, he seems to have settled on the Warburton's gf white bread which is ok but we haven't really nailed out and about yet so he takes a packed lunch whenever we go out. Which is fine while he's nine...

HotChocolateWeather · 15/11/2018 17:09

Sorry to ask a really stupid question but what happens to you gluten intolerant folk if you eat gluten?

It depends why you are gluten free.

Some people go gluten free because "wheat bloats them" or for other reasons that have nothing to do with allergies. For these people not much happens as they are choosing to be gluten free. Mostly they may just feel a bit bloated.

Some go gluten free because it triggers IBS symptoms. These range from mild stomach pangs and slight d&v through to I feel like my insides are being turned inside out stomach cramps and d&v so bad you spent hours on end in the bathroom and wish you had a hasmat suit.

Others are coeliac which is an autoimmune disease. For these people not only do they get the nurovirus style epic cramps and d&v but they also get the pleasure of their body utterly breaking as the gluten literally attacks their body.

For both coeliacs and ibs sufferers with a severe intolerance symptoms can in some cases last for weeks or even months. It's why avoiding cross contamination is so vital.

I once had a pizza which was gluten free but they must have had lax handling practices as both myself and my coeliac friend were very sick afterwards. I had nurovirus type symptoms for 3 days, she had them for 3 weeks.

I have major trust issues and rarely eat out. Too many places think that "it's a fad" and cross contamination doesn't matter.

MrsGrindah · 15/11/2018 17:36

longway First of all that was a sandwich for me. Second, what if that was all I could afford to feed my kids? Don’t sneer at me cos I CHOOSE to spend only £1 on a sarnie. Third, you are completely missing the point of this thread.

OP posts:
longwayoff · 15/11/2018 18:02

And you have had an irony bypass. Do try to get over it.

MrsGrindah · 15/11/2018 18:20

Ooooh it was irony was it? Ha ha funny then. Let’s not fight over a £1 sarnie!

OP posts:
soulrider · 15/11/2018 18:30

I'm amazed you managed to buy one by accident. I work in a reasonably large city and it's hit and miss as to whether the places that potentially stock them actually have any in.

Things actually seem to be getting worse as well, both Costa and Starbucks seem to have stopped their gf wraps.

Wish McDonalds did gf buns like they do in Europe

MrsGrindah · 15/11/2018 18:47

I went to Boots in the station. I noticed a new ploughman’s. I’m watching my calorie intake at the moment and saw that there was only about 20 calories difference between a ploughman’s vs my usual plain cheese. Took it to the counter . Long queue. When they rang it through I found out it was £3.15 vs the £1 I would pay for a plain one. That’s when I twigged it was GF . But it looked nice and I was dashing for a train so I bought it. But it was horrible and I thought grossly overpriced.Hopefully that has answered people’s queries as to how I ended up buying it!

SugarTwist · 15/11/2018 19:19

I accidentally bought a gluten free egg salad sandwich from Morrison’s, I didn’t notice until it finished and it was lovely. I couldn’t taste the difference, so I can recommend it.

I am gluten intolerant, I don’t follow a gluten free diet at all but I probably should.

longwayoff · 15/11/2018 20:23

Mrs grindah, sorry I've upset you, not my intention at all, it was meant as a little dig at another poster who'd been a bit snotty about the price. I need more practice with the irony stickSmile

NicoAndTheNiners · 15/11/2018 20:30

Dd has just been diagnosed as coeliac. Everything "tastes like ass" she says.

Bread especially. And the cost of everything is frightful. The dominoes gf pizza is significantly more....I know the flour costs more but they're profiteering.

I might start a campaign against them. Pizza express they're the same price.
