...yuk! Of course it could have just been the brand , but I feel sorry for anyone who has to eat a gluten free diet if that was typical. Also it was bloody expensive! £3.15 vs my normal version which is a quid! I’m going to write to the Daily Mail to complain!

Just out of interest, I went to Portugal this summer and gluten free products were as available, if not more so than in the UK. I went to a tiny village, in the Algarve, with a tiny cafe and found, lo and behold, GF cornettos!

Magenta46 · 14/11/2018 22:17

I was given a gluten free loaf that would rival any quality wholemeal loaf. I think it was a German brand. It was quite delicious. Very surprised as any gluten free stuff I've tasted before was quite revolting. I wish I could member the name as I often cater for large numbers of people.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 22:17

I tend to look at the filling rather than reading when I’m grabbing a sandwich anyway as I always go for egg or prawn

Wow that’s for the information I am definitely wiser about gluten intolerances!

Also the £1 cheese sandwich op talks about from Boots is actually very nice

Worieddd · 14/11/2018 22:20

*Thanks for the information.

I didn’t realise people could get so ill from it ShockSad

ANiceLentilHotpot · 14/11/2018 22:22

elephantoverthehill i found GF cornettos in the Algarve too, i was very excited! Also in the Algarve randomly found a Chinese restaurant that did GF versions of everything on the menu, I normally avoid Chinese food because of soy sauce, etc.

Flowerfae · 14/11/2018 22:22

Most gluten free bread is vile. DH found a warburtons gluten free sourdough yesterday.. and its not that bad, still dry though but I toasted it and it was ok. Wouldn't dare get a ready made gluten free sandwich though :D

Hassled · 14/11/2018 22:22

I'm quite a proficient bread maker with a Coeliac DC. I have made many types of bread reasonably well but I have never ever come close to making GF bread that is even remotely close to what bread should be. I just can't do it. I have bought some which is OK-ish, but never more than that. It really does suck to be Coeliac.

grumiosmum · 14/11/2018 22:31

We have a coeliac in the family and, yup, gf bread is not very nice.

Premium brands are just bearable when toasted, with lots of butter.

best gf sandwiches come from M&S. Wraps better than normal sandwiches.

nonamehere · 14/11/2018 22:33

Sainsbury's have a GF loaf in the 'baked in store' section which is nice, I think - although like many others, I've been GF for so long that I've forgotten what bread is supposed to taste like. I agree that Schar frozen white rolls are good. I'm very pleased to be able to buy a GF sandwich for lunch ( even if it is a bit dry) instead of always having to plan ahead & carry food. The price is annoying though.

elephantoverthehill · 14/11/2018 22:35

ANiceLentilHotpot ha ha, yes strangely emancipating - a cornetto, on holiday. Grin

nonamehere · 14/11/2018 22:37

ANiceLentilHotpot there's a Chinese restaurant (Sweet Mandarin)in Manchester that has a gluten free menu - worth a visit if you're ever in the area.

IwantaHippopotamusForChristmas · 14/11/2018 22:39

Boots does gluten free.
And their regular cheese sandwiches are the nicest £1 ish cheese sandwiches around! Think it’s the cream cheese/good slice cheese mix

onthenaughtystepagain · 14/11/2018 22:41

cheese and tomato starting at 0.79p

That's really cheap, less than a penny for a sandwich! Sorry, it's a thing I detest in shops, Asda were once selling pate at 2.99p/kg, when I queried the exceedingly low price they couldn't see the problem!

On the subject of gluten free, if I have a Christmas cake recipe and I want to make it suitable for someone who needs G,F as well as changing the flour I also need to add xanthan gum to stop the crumble factor. Has anyone done this successfully?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 14/11/2018 22:42

Erm that’s the whole reason this thread was started... a cheese sandwich from boots 😂

PickAChew · 14/11/2018 22:59

Have you ever made bread, Rhonda?

For my breadmaker recipe, a typical small loaf is 400g flour, 270ml (ie 270g) of water, 20g butter, then everything else. Unless you use fresh yeast or buy Doves, the yeast will have emulsifiers in (these tend to be simple fatty acids and nothing more sinister.)

Ascorbic acid is vitamin c, which the yeast loves, so will work better for it. All the thiamine etc in the wee brackets is the vitamin and mineral fortification that most bread flour in this country has.

I do admit that boots sarnies used to be quite palatable but just look grim and brown, these days.

Did you not read my posts?

OnceUponATimeInAmerica · 14/11/2018 23:15

If you don’t make bread and you don’t understand food labelling, maybe you weren’t the best candidate for calling out the OP for her £1 cheese sarnie’s supposed ‘yum’?

BlackeyedGruesome · 14/11/2018 23:35

aldi do sandwiches for 85p.

Oops sorry, my error!! The butties are from 79pence for a basic sandwich. They are decent and it's from an independent sho p that's been there for years and still doing well.

Cineraria · 15/11/2018 01:43

DH had some Fria bread rolls which were really nice. They are actually made of wheat starch which is gluten free so they taste right even if the texture isn't quite as chewy as normal bread. Their cinnamon pastries are lovely too and good for us all as the rest of us can't have milk.

Our local chip shop is completely gluten free on Mondays. They're closed Sunday, so I'm guessing they have a big clean out after Saturday's hours end to make sure there is no contamination. DH can eat thin batter with normal flour though anyway as the high cooking temperature seems to damage/destroy the protein sufficiently to leave him without symptoms.

Interesting to hear some of you could eat gluten when pregnant. My allergies stopped then too. I wish I could have hired a cat for the duration!

AHeartAPenny · 15/11/2018 01:55

There is decent GF bread available but you have to pay an arm and a leg for it. If you can't afford £5 a loaf / sandwich you're stuck with the shit, sawdusty stuff. Still, at least it exists. When you're really hungry and caught out without snacks in your bag, expensive horrible food is better than no food at all.
The thing that pisses me off is that the GF sandwiches are never included in the meal deals. So a non-coeliac can grab a sandwich, snack and drink for £3 but I have to pay £3.50 for the sandwich alone Hmm
I spend a lot of time hungry and bitter.
