It was called Running Scared and it had Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush as the opening credit music. It was about a girl with red hair who's dad was a taxi driver and there was a bad guy played by Chris Ellison from the Bill. I googled it for years and never found anything but ironically I have found something on Wiki today, but even so, no one I know has ever seen it. Has anyone on here seen it? It scared thr heebie jeebies out of me when I was 9 (though it didn't stop me developing a crush on Chris Ellison when he was Burnside in the Bill Grin )

Oh, and pp mentioned the Boy From Space. You can buy it on DVD from the BFI.

Lunde · 07/11/2018 22:34

Is it this one?

I have the paperback of Running Scared and Break in the Sun, also by Bernard Ashley. I loved Bernard Ashley's books as a child.

I remember the song and the title but not the programme Hmm

Haggisfish · 07/11/2018 22:34

God yes, remember these well! My very tenuous claim to fame is that Johnny Briggs was written by the gran of my primary school classmate!Grin

ScreamingValenta · 07/11/2018 22:39

I struggled with seeing Chris Ellison as DCI Burnside on The Bill, because he was fixed in my mind as the villain with the very identifying 'bins' from Running Scared. Although Frank Burnside eventually turned dodgy IIRC.

Unicyclethief · 07/11/2018 22:39

Please can someone link Break in the Sun. I just can’t find it anywhere, although I did find Kizzy!

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 07/11/2018 22:46

I can't find Break In The Sun either. Sad. ScreamingValenta they were great weren't they? Terry on the fence is another one (book) I remember.

UsernamesSoHardToChoose · 07/11/2018 22:46

Spooky - heard late bush the other day and thought must google what that show it was!

Thought I hated scary tv but remember enjoying cuckoo sister, running scared, chocky and yes - box of delights every Christmas!

Maybe wasn’t as much of a scaredy-cat as I thought.

Did love Anne of green gables every Christmas too...

ScreamingValenta · 07/11/2018 22:50

Yes, HaroldsSocalledBluetits and another very memorable one was The Trouble with Donovan Croft about a boy who'd become mute following a trauma. Bernard Ashley was a teacher, I believe, and he really captured the 70s/80s state school atmosphere for me.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 07/11/2018 22:54

Oh yes Donovan Croft was great as well! Agree about his writing seeming very realistic, and also that his characters were in gritty situations which he seemed to understand. I bet he was a great teacher.

ContessaGoesMarchingDOWNTOHELL · 07/11/2018 22:58

Did anyone watch a series called the Snow Spider, or similar? It would have been the late 80s. One particular scene really really terrified me....

Duffmcstockings · 07/11/2018 22:59

I have chocky on dvd, if anyone wants it. Pm me. Does anyone remember the series with the Beetles song, where they end up at a theme park? Her comes the sun la la la la.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 07/11/2018 23:01

I remember it although mainly the theme tune and the girl.

Also remember Chocky.

Was Moondial something about a big old house and time travelling at night??

Nessiej78 · 07/11/2018 23:05

The Boy From Space was a Look and Read series. Does anyone remember another scary one from that series - Dark Towers. It had a ghostly knight and I remember it being really scary watching that at school when I was about 7 years old. Amazed the teachers thought it was ok for us to watch!

ScreamingValenta · 07/11/2018 23:06

Another good series from that era was 'Break Point' about Barry, an aspiring tennis player from a working class background. He formed a friendship with an upper-middle-class girl who was also trying to make it as a tennis player.

IsabelleSE19 · 07/11/2018 23:07

I loved Running Scared - always makes me think of the Woolwich Ferry. The main character was Paula and her best friend was Nind - Narinder.

Also loved Moondial but my favourite was Children of Green Knowe. The ghosts themselves weren't scary but Green Noah was even though it was a walking tree. And the idea of the grandmother being the only one to survive the plague, sitting in the empty nursery rocking an empty cradle was heartbreaking. Now I have DC I might be in floods if I watched it again!

Spudina · 07/11/2018 23:09

Dark Towers was awesome. I remember the Knight. I thought it was a words and pictures thing with Wordy. We did Badger Girl at school too.

sayhellotothelittlefella · 07/11/2018 23:10

How weird I was only thinking about this series yesterday. Yes I remember it and I loved it. The main things I remember were Charlie Ellison and them calling the glasses ‘binns’.

Nix32 · 07/11/2018 23:11

So pleased to have found this thread! I loved Running Scared and Break in the Sun. Brilliant programmes. Still think of Running Scared whenever I hear the song.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 07/11/2018 23:17

I hated The Cuckoo Sister. Even though I probably wasn't meant to I really hated the new daughter that came along. I always thought she'd really thrown a spanner in the nice life of the family and quite resented her for the trouble she caused.

(Very stable family, no projection. I was obviously just a cunt at a very young age).

ScreamingValenta · 07/11/2018 23:20

I quite envied 'Rosie' in The Cuckoo Sister - stepping straight into that wealthy family Grin.

scotjls · 07/11/2018 23:23

Does anyone remember Timm Thayler, the boy who sold his laugh. Same era. Really badly dubbed German programme I think. Giving me shivers just thinking about it.
Also - Dark Towers. I think we were shown that in school, on the wooden TV with doors that was wheeled around the school. I remember the theme song

Meredith501 · 07/11/2018 23:26

Does anyone remember a programme with a tall man with white hair dressed in a white suit? He was a bad guy.

I can't remember anything else but the image I have in my mind of him still scares me silly.

Spudina · 07/11/2018 23:33

I was thinking of the boy who sold his laugh earlier. The Baron lived in a Bond Villian type house in the side of a cliff. It had a great theme tune!
