What do you think of dark brown walls?

We're about to decorate our newly combined dining room/lounge. We're not changing the existing curtains which are brown/orange/green in the dining room and brown in the lounge.

We've currently got a boring light coloured neutral shade on the walls. I want to be a bit bolder so I thought of dark brown which would go with existing soft furnishings. Dh doesn't agree, he said it will look like poo (literally!).

Thoughts please? Or any other colour recommendations?

My therapist's office has dark brown walls with green furnishings.
It feels like a cave

Thumbcat · 06/11/2018 17:50

I don't think dark brown walls sounds very nice tbh. I'd probably just change the curtains.

Three rooms in my house have a dark brown feature wall. l hate them, but l can't redecorate as l'm in a rented property. lt's just very gloomy and dull.

Have you seen the film
Hunger?

BringOnTheScience · 06/11/2018 17:51

Don't do it!!!

I well remember as a child moving into a house that was entirely dark brown. It was sooooooo dark and depressing. Small fortune spent on white paint to cover it up.

RangeRider · 06/11/2018 17:52

It will be very dark. Why not go with orange on one wall? Nice & bright & will go with brown curtains and the other ones.

Heuschrecke · 06/11/2018 17:53

It doesn't sound too outrageous. I've recently seen a pic of a friend's sitting room where they have (or appear to have) black walls in one area of the room - a brave choice but it looks amazingly fantastic.

So, go for a really dark chocolate colour or a really dark green colour perhaps?

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 06/11/2018 17:53

Nooooo, dark brown walls will be horrible! Don't do it!

SilverySurfer · 06/11/2018 18:03

Sounds a bit gloomy - I wouldn't

AfterSchoolWorry · 06/11/2018 18:05

Awful. Ugly. Grim. Depressing.

It'll look like a dirty protest.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 06/11/2018 18:06

Sounds very 70s tbh. Are the curtains that Orla Kiel’s print?

Heuschrecke · 06/11/2018 18:07

I should add that my friend chose some fantastic floor/table lamps to go with the very dark walls. So you need some wonderful lighting to go with it.

twosoups1972 · 06/11/2018 18:13

Interesting!

I'm not changing the curtains, they were made to measure and expensive plus I really like the print.

Sorry it's not a very good photo, they are wrapped up in polythene.

What about a lighter brown then, sort of coffee colour?

I’d think “Yuck”

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 06/11/2018 18:17

You'll feel like you are underground.

I'd personally do it cream - but the greeny blue colour of the curtains would be MUCH nicer than brown if you fancy a bold colour

HoraceWimple · 06/11/2018 18:18

A fawn colour would be nicer but I’m not sure they would go with your curtains.
What about navy/indigo?

Babdoc · 06/11/2018 18:18

Reminds me of the 1970’s - everything was brown and orange. Maybe you could go for a retro look? Though I agree with PPs that it would be v dark and depressing to have all the walls dark brown.

NancyDonahue · 06/11/2018 18:18

Dulux pebble shore paint is lovely and goes with pretty much any colour. We've just done our lounge and we have a dark taupe carpet and curtains.

twosoups1972 · 06/11/2018 18:20

Should have added that we don't actually have that much wall space. In the dining room, one wall has 3 windows in it, one has glass bifold doors and the third has a large cabinet.

The lounge has glass doors on 3 walls and a fitted bookcase on the fourth.

Ok I've ruled out the brown! So what colour?

The house we bought features dark brown walls in many of the rooms and we surprisingly like it, it's very modern good quality wallpaper and it does have the wow factor. As soon as I walked in loved the decor so much so we've had to change very little. All personal preference though.

LordPickle · 06/11/2018 18:33

It will make the room feel much smaller than it is.

twosoups1972 · 06/11/2018 18:35

I hadn't thought of wallpaper! Maybe I should find a nice wallpaper instead of paint....?

I agree with your Dh!

You could repaint in another neutral so it's nice and clean.
Yeah, weak coffee would be better than poo brown.
